A Little Bit Of Help Wanted....

Hey everyone....

I'm just after some tips... I take Lottie to obedience everyweek with the hope to be trialing by the end of the year!! She's so focused, great at everything - healing, sit, stand for exam, recalls etc, but she's really lacking enthusiam in her drops - she takes about 3-4 secs to drop, and tonight it was worse :mad (and then I lost my temper with her, then I felt sooooo bad :(:mad ).

Does anyone have any exercises, tips I can use to get her to drop quickly?? She's a very relaxed/laid back dog, but everything else in training she's really on the ball, but her drops.... but it's weird - even her drops at a distance she does quickly  , its just when we're healing and I ask her to go into a drop....

Hope to hear some great things I could try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :):mad

I would probably ensure your dog is physically well first...my preference is Bowen for musculoskeletal issues that don't require veterinary treatment. Then I would get a video of you and your dog working in a few different contexts. It's amazing how easy it is for us as handlers to confuse our dogs. Then I would play the 2 food game with very high value toys or food which will also bring the fun element into training. Then I would suggest you spend a day with a Dalmatian, just to put it all in pespective

It's ok Beth we all get frustrated and we all have bad nights

Daisy had a donut as a reward tonight (long story) and she had so much food drive she kept missing my dodgy down signal. We got asked to do a demo tonight for the intro night people and she was appalling, she missed her down signal because all she could focus on was ZOMG DONUT!!!!1111!

And pssst, you know Daisy is way more fun than those boring BCs

We All have "Those nights/days" when we shoudn't train but we do and this only leads to frustration.

We are lucky that our dogs are so forgiving. Don't beat yourself up over it.

Boring BC's hey Bec .......... it's never boring around my place with 4 BC's to keep me entertained :laugh: ;)

Beth Sophie can demonstrate the very complex and impressive "lay down and embarrass mummy by going to sleep in the middle of class and don't move again until you get a kick in the arse so mummy looks like a deranged dog beater". It'll be added to CCD runs soon i'm sure.

There's nothing like a bit of anticipation to get a more enthusiastic response. I'd try jackpotting the fastest downs. Either with multiple treats or something tastier than usual. I'd be surprised if they didn't get faster. It works for my lazy couch potato.

So I thought i'd give you all a little update :)

I've been working ALOT with Lottie this week, making everything so interesting and fun!!!! I went back to the beginning with her drops and 'jackpotted' her and she started going down alot better... I've also been trying to get her more excited (as she's quite a calm dog), and that has helped ALOT - and not only been using treats, but i've been taking a rope pull type thing, and at the end of each little session we have a massive play!!!

I feel alot better about it - we went down to Sandgate this arv for a lovely walk, and I decided i'd do a little training (on the big grassed areas), and there wasn't many people around, and boy did she go well today!!! Then again, we had SUCH a massive play, throwing sticks into the water, playing tug etc etc... There is hope yet... :p :)

I do love my girl to bits!!!! I just can't expect so much from her, which is what i'm doing.....

Baby steps are the way to go. You can't go from step 1 to 10 you need to go through steps 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 steps as well.....be patient :)

Don't forget to come and see me on Monday night :p

I know, that my problem, I have to be more patient :) ... But now that i've seen that when I go nice and slow, have fun with Lottie and really get excited that she actually enjoys what she's doing and wants to learn  . So yes, no more wanting to fly through everything, I'll take all the time Lottie needs and have fun while doing it, and I will definately come and talk to you on Monday, can't wait!!!!!! :)

Lets just say i've had a bit of an eye-opener and was expecting WAY too much from a baby!!!! :):( Woopsies.....

:) Don't stress it LuvLottie - most of us have been guilty of that - but hey -- sounds like you and Lottie have discovered the joys of training through play - that's huge!!!! Well done.
