Bullmastiff Backyard Breeder?

Ok so I regularly scope,

www.sydney.gumtree.com.au in general and I always find myself looking at dogs and puppies for sale . Anywho I came across this add and it reminded me of something that happened to me the other day.

Now in relation to what happened to me I was walking with my boys (long story short) came across a group of three young lads about 17 - 18 maybe? One had a pure bred rottie and the other kid had a female chocolate 'bullmastiff.' First thing I thought when I saw her was she was gorgeous and she had a pure chocolate coat with a white mask and if I can remember white paws etc. I said ooh what a beautiful dog is she a pitbull (as she closely resembled a pitbull) the young lad answered,

"No actually she's a bullmastiff!"

I said. WHAAAAAAA? :mad She has the size, colour, weight and general looks of a pitbull if not pitbull a cross bully of some sort. I said her head is not of that of a bullmastiff (she had a long lean head not a box head ) and he said they always look like pitbulls until their heads fill out. I said dear boy Razor (who was playing with Cocoa (that was the dogs name)) is a bullmastiff cross. I didn't really go on a rant because I don't think these lads cared, or would listen anyway but Boss played happily with the dogs and we left.

NOW my point is. Bullmastiffs always have to have a black mask http://www.bullmastiffsonline.com/standard.html

Any shade of brindle, fawn or red; colour to be pure and clear. A slight white marking on chest permissible. Other white markings undesirable. Black muzzle essential, toning off towards eyes, with dark markings around eyes contributing to expression.

So why is everyone ripping off any bull breed as a BULLMASTIFF?!!!? Razor is only half but 90 percent of his looks are bullmastiff and this dog had a white mask?! Where did this kid buy this dog cause he got severley ripped off.

Also the dogs in the gumtree add the black one looks to (ME) like a sharpei? (Scuse the spelling)

Sorry guys had to have a rant....

Edited to add the photos not the link.

Esky HAHAH you caught me out!!!

I actually have rang up twice two different breeders and drilled them about their dogs and as to what pedigree papers they have and as to why if the parents are pedigree why don't the pups have papers? And I have emailed two teacup breeders too I know its pointless but :mad

Hey Golden,

I thought that too actually but he was adamant it was a bullmastiff. Like he honestly believed in his eyes he owned a purebred bullmastiff.

Was it entire? if it was then maybe he was worried you would dob him in for having an entire pitty on the loose

Maybe he thought it was.

I was at a show recently with some friends of mine who breed Bullmastiff's and this guy came up to them with what one could only call a total heiz mutt and told them it was a Bullmastiff when asked.

It was obvious the guy had been ripped off but he believed it was a BM.

Golden Cocoa was female and entire but he wouldn't have thought I'd dob him in cause I told him Razor was a pitt cross bullmastiff and Boss is a lil am staff and I was blabbering how I love bull breeds .

I think he was young and unknowledgeable about dogs in general cause his mate with the rottie was a wreck. His dog was 14 months old and Boss was the first dog he was ever allowed to play with other than Cocoa (the bullpit ) because he attacks other dogs. I said have you had him as a puppy he said yes. I said so why didn't he get to play with other dogs because apparently he attacked Cocoa then the owner had come to a conclusion that he was dog aggressive. Meanwhile Boss is 15 kilos and playing with the Rottie and the rottie was enjoying himself and looked actually a little bit scared of Boss. The minute the rott would give Boss a little growl (which was fine no aggression just letting Boss know go away) the owner reprimanded and the rott winced expecting a smack. :mad

People thinking they own pure BM is not as uncommon as you think. I come across this all the time.

Jackie, I might suggest you remove the gumtree link? You are giving this idiot free advertising. :mad

That's true Rocco I'll remove the link  Damn back yarders... might have to email them and send them links to some of your guyses sites and show them what purebreds are.

Hopefully not without a site owners permission. :mad

Always with permission :mad

I'm actually going to email these people now and send them a link to the bullmastiff breed standard if you're going to charge an arm and a leg for a dog you should be guaranteed it is in fact what breed you claim. *Shakes fist*

I emailed the people I will post a reply IF I get one. My email was short (due to character limit) but went something like this.

I see you are advertising purebred bullmastiff puppies. The black dog in the picture looks nothing like a purebred bullmastiff. Bullmastiffonline.com have a breed standard which clearly states all bullmastiffs must have a black face and one of the puppies in your litter has a white face? You cannot advertise your dogs as purebred bullmastiffs and continue to misslead the public you need to change the add. Feel free to respond.

Sorry it wasn't the exact words but the gist of it. Hope I get a response

Personally Jackie, I'd not bother. They're not doing anything illegal and I don't see how taking the high moral ground with a complete stranger will encourage them to do anything other than give you a serve.

You should definitely NOT link them to any website without the owner's permission.

I don't really know the deal on links on this forum so I deleted the link I didn't know it wasn't allowed?

I'd prefer to speak my mind then be silent. I think small acts do help it's better than ignoring it. If they change it great. If they don't at least they'll know the general public aren't aren't all easily led by cute puppies. Technically its fraud. I guarantee these people know their dogs aren't purebred but realise how much more money they will make advertising them as such.

Poodle do you mean on this website or in general?

I have will and do post links everywhere. I see people on here posting links ALL the time. And I posted them a link to the bullmastiff website online. I don't think all links need permission. Breeders might want to be asked for permission for their sites but for websites in general I never ask permission to post the link up.

I think all you're going to do is piss off someone who'll become another person who regards regard purebred fanciers as "elitist snobs".

Suit yourself :mad

I prefer to educate buyers rather than castigate sellers.

If you're sending an email that's likely to be poorly received, then you are implying the owner of the website agrees with you. I'd not do it. That is different to providing a link for purely information purposes.
