Why Are Some Pups Sold Without Papers Altogether

Having purchased a few purebred dogs from registered breeders over the years, I must say a few of them were not accompanied with limited reg. I have been happy with each and everyone of them so no problems there. I was wondering why ?

i dont know the answer sorry but was also wondering this. i brought saffron from a breeder who offered papers but before i came here i didnt know any better so didnt get the papers.

i have been trying to figure out how i can find saffrons heritage without her papers because i didnt think to ask what her prefix was.

Depending on what state you purchased the animal, some states (WA & SA) it was until recently permitted to sell without papers. However the Eastern states have required all pups in a litter to be registered for quite a long time. In this case - I would say dodgy breeders!

If you purchased her from Qld and from a registered breeder than she is supposed to come with papers and they are supposed to be put it the new owner's name by the seller - that is in the rules. If they are selling pups without papers then they should be reported to Dogs Qld.

eta, if the breeder does not want the dog bred from, then they can put it on limited registration, but the new owner has to sign a form acknowledging that you are aware that the dog will be listed on the limited register. There should be no additional cost for the papers, as all dogs from a registered breeder are meant to have papers.

It would have been nice to have limited reg. papers at least. I didn't want full registry as I have no intentions to breed or show. I was offered full rego by the breeder should I have been interested in breeding or showing but no mention of limited reg. papers. At the end of the day, no damage has been done I suppose. I do have a beautiful dog, the sort of dog with a temperament that I have always dreamed of. My other dogs are also beautiful but there is something extra special about my beautiful girl.

About 30 years ago when I bought my Rotti, I had the choice of buying her without papers or with papers, which cost an extra $100. This is in SA.

But now if you are buying from a registered breeder they all come with papers, either limited or main registered.

I don't want to report the breeder to Dogs Qld. I mean, the breeder was prepared to sell the pup with full rego so it isn't a case of having ulterior motives in not selling pup with limited rego; if that was the case then I would presume that there would not have been the option of having a pup with full rego.

The fact remains that I have a fantastic pet and I could not be happier.

the money was the reason i didnt get saffrons papers because her breeder said $800 with and $450 without so i went without

Is it just me or does this sounds dodgy as hell? I would never purchase a dog without pedigree papers unless I was adopting from a shelter or rescue group.

If you bought the pup without papers, are you certain the breeder WAS registered?

Nearly half price for no papers sounds fishy to me.

what? :( I didnt say that I purchased her for half price? it would have cost me an extra $200 if I wanted

full registration. I am certain that the breeder was indeed registered. My main concern is that the breeder health checks her dogs and knowing how prevalent heath problems are in this breed I am more than satisfied.

It seems to happen quite a fair bit where puppies that are sold as pets do not always come with limited reg. papers. Is it all that important?

Yes it is. If a breeder is willing to break the rules in one way, then they probably will in others. And no matter what you believe, without papers supplied you can't KNOW the breeder is registered or that the pup is pedigree. May as well pay $50 for a mutt at the pound.

It costs about $30 to register a dog (on the main or limit register) and so charging stupid amounts extra for papers is a con. Most likely it's a dodgy breeder who will convince you not to get papers with the high amount because they can't actually supply them.

WA still doesnt have to sell with papers but all pups must be registered .

QLD they are suppose to go with papers so they reality is your breeder hasnt followed the COE there bound by.

When you say health testing did you get a copy of those papers & how do you now they match the pup you have ??

I would have thought one of the important reasons to have papers, particularly in Queensland is that without them, if you wanted to do any of the performance disciplines, you would have to register the dog as an Associate - and in Queensland, though not elsewhere, that would limit your options in relation to registering future non-papered dogs.

ML, it seems to be quite prevalent where reg. breeders sell pups without limited reg. papers. I am not fussed with that although I am surprised that it is law that they must supply limited reg. papers and yet opt not to do so. I do know for a fact that this breeder is indeed legitimate as he/she sent me photocopies of the pup's parents reg. papers. No problem with mutts, there are some beautiful mutts out there but I really wanted a CKCS.

Another thing I have noticed is that pups with full reg. papers are always selling for an extra $100-$200. I have never come across a pup with full reg. papers selling for an extra $30 only.
