What are you going for next?

OH was trying to convince me to go the 7D. But I don't want to spend that much, plus its quite a bit heavier than the 550D

One of your requirements was that it wasn't too heavy. The 7D is alot heavier than the rebel range (450D-1000D) It's also got masses of controls that might send you into meltdown intially and it doesn't have as many auto options as the rebels. Honest, I think the rebels are a fantastic starting point, you my find you never need another camera.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly...just better put. ;)

I get it today, after OH gets back from an interview.

My OH has managed to haggle the 550D with twin lenses [18-55, 55-250mm] to $1449. We WERE meant to get it today, but I had to get money out and by the time we got they'd closed [slightly early too!]

That is really great ;) I can't wait to see your pictures ;)

My first SLR is an Olympus because they are the lightest/smallest of them all.

But I know Olympus isn't a popular option but I have taken lots of pics I really love. When I learn how to use the thing properly I am sure I will get heaps better pics.

OH has recently fallen for the Olympus - the lenses are very good quality, it's smaller DSLR than the Canon and the price is RIGHT!! It's around $600 - $700 with a good quality lens kit. I must admit that I'm fairly impressed with it too. We both have Canon 40Ds so are used to a fairly high quality camera and lens. He uses his for clinical photos so is very picky about lens quality and has a very good technical knowledge base. He is currently researching to buy new cameras because he had a lot of stuff stolen from the surgery a few weeks ago. I know he isn't at all impressed with many of the kit lenses that go with the Canon cameras. The 17 - 85mm image stabilised lens which goes with the 50D (I think) is okay.

I agree with OMD on that 50mm 1.4. It's an awesome lens - my favourite! The 1.8mm is a fair compromise from what I hear though and much more affordable.

I have:

Canon 50mm 1.4

Canon 60mm macro [2nd hand]

Tamron 17-250mm with hood [2nd hand]

UV filters for the 50mm and the macro

Now its time to play.

wow, how exciting. Where did you get the second hand lenses? I think you'll love the macro and the 50.

Got the secondhand lenses at Photographic Wholesalers on Hutt St, Adelaide

woo hoo you're off to a great start.

I wonder how many of us have bought cameras because of or at least largely influenced by looking in Photos here on DOL.
