Just wondering how breeders feel about being contacted after the pups have gone to thier forever homes?

i recently sent photo's and an update on how saffron is doing but didnt get any sort of response. :D feeling slighty disheartned by this as i couldnt ever imagine my life with out saffron and if i was her breeder id want to know how she is doing.

That's one of the things I am actually going to request from my puppy buyers, if they could please keep in contact with updates on how the pups are going, especially photos of when they are fully matured.

I have just bred my first litter of pups ,& I'm already very attached to them & am dreading about having to say good bye, but the only thing that will make me feel better about it is the fact they will be making some other person or family very happy, & one of the most satisfying parts of breeding would be to get lovely updates on how a puppy I have bred have made someone so happy.

I am so sorry your breeder doesn't feel this way, :D but maybe they are away at the moment or something is wrong with their computer & they haven't actually received your email yet.

To be honest.

I have always said to my puppy buyers photos and updates are always welcome. After about the first week or so, contact disappears. Everyone's life is so busy. whether it is because of time, or other reasons, even breeders do not get updates from their puppy buyers. If I do get an update, it is always replied to.

I love to get even the smallest info on our puppies (and they are our puppies for life regardless of who's life they take over once they leave here). We like to develop friendships with the people who have our dogs but this isn't always what suits them and their lives, so we are happy with whatever contact we get from those people but we always respond.

We usually get updates from our buyers around the pups' birthdays or at Christmas or when we have another litter. It makes contact few and far between but seeing the pups we have introduced into this world grow into happy, healthy and loved pets just makes my day :D

We love getting emails and photos of our puppies as they grow up and some of our puppy buyers have ended up becoming good friends over the years. Every one of our puppy buyers keep in touch even if it's only an email a couple of times a year. It's great having that contact and seeing how our babies have grown up and how much they are loved.

I love getting calls and emails - especially photos. Just got 4 pics yesterday of one of my pug puppies who is in Tassie. I am friends with a few of the pet owners on facebook so stay in touch with them. Actually FB has been good, it's not like we are living each others lives and it is a much easier way of watching the pups develop without asking for photos. I wasn't sure how that would go but has been great. One lady contacted me through facebook to become friends because she is interested in one of my dogs, this has worked out great as we are really getting to know each other.

What a disappointment that they have not been in contact with you - hopefully you will hear back from your breeder soon. maybe just send another pic and a few lines on how she is going and leave it at that, at least you have tried. I know how your feeling because I went through the same with Lizzy's breeder, regular emails and pics but gave up after about 10 months with no reply, so gave up on her. Piper's breeder and I have become good friends, I would be lost without her.

I enjoy the emails from those who have gone to new homes, always lovely to hear how they are getting on. I'm also happy to help with any problems a new pup can bring to owners.

Some people choose to never stay in contact once they have left my home, even though they promised at the time, I suppose some breeders are the same way - out of sight and out of mind.

Stef 83.... If I never got letters, photos, stories, XMas cards etc from my puppies I probably would never breed again!

In fact, I almost make it a condition of sale that the new owners keep us up to date and send lots of pics and I ALWAYS respond and choose a pic to add to my website. It does take a lot of time though, when you have lots of pups all over the country it can make for a lot of emails to respond too! Maybe your breeder just hasn't got around to replying yet. Surely she appreciates the update.

for our recent litter I wrote in their notes in the folder that goes with the puppy ,

that from time to time we would love to hear from the puppy's family with the occasional photo and update

every 6 months would do, '

I still get updates from a litter nearly 5 years ago,

it lovely to know that not only did they grow into beautiful dogs but are still also much loved and cared for family members,

and I always respond, because they are just as proud of their dogs as I am

I love getting pictures and updates but the sad truth is most pet people don’t do that after the first 12mths. I always ring or e-mail them on their birthdays but other than that only hear from them if they are wanting another or there is some issue. I do have a few that send me regular updates but they are few and far between.

I love to here from my puppy owners and love receiving photos.

I and other puppy owners organise play dates so my dogs and their dogs can all catch up. We recently had a puppy catch up with 10 month old litter and there dad and 5 out of 8 came along (2 lived too far way, 1 had to work) Was the greatest fun and we plan to do it again when they are 1.

I wouldn't want to breed if I never got feedback and photos or seeing them.

Anyway puppy owners..... keep them coming!!!

I'm thinking the breeder didn't receive the email. Give her a call and ask if she got it.

stef I am very sorry that the breeder has not responded to you.

I contact the new owners within 2-3 days to see how the pup went then again about 1 month later. I give them my contact details and its up to them to do it as often as they wish I always respond.

Last year someone found me through DOL breeders and sent me pics of a dog I sold 11 years ago. Recently they contacted me to say that she had died.

This was great.

Love getting contact with pups and their families.....

As a breeder I am also careful that I dont want to intrude or nag for photos or updates.

I make sure I send a xmas card each year with a note about how things are happening here and how i would love to see a new photo. Also this is the opportunity for the owners to let me know if there is anyt change of address etc.

I actually mail the card out in November so they get it well before the xmas rush and it is common to get a card and photo back.

I bred my first litter ( unplanned ) 2 years ago and only tonight did I get another update from one of my buyers.

I love the fact that 3 of the 4 owners keep in some sort of contact. I respond immediately as I think it is only polite and apart from the fact that I get quite excited to hear from them as most of the time I also get photos. All but 1 pup left the state so this is the only time I get to see how they are growing. I love the fact that they take the time and it shows me that they really love the pup that I have sent them.

I understand your dissapointment as I think I would feel exactly the same. I would say to you that maybe send some more info when you feel like it and if then you get no response then just enjoy your time with your pup and don't sweat the small stuff............... at least you get to spend time with a dog that you really love and the dog loves you even more in return and that is the important stuff.................your dogs breeder is very lucky to find a home for their pup like yours

  • 2 weeks later...

Updates and photos are a very important part of breeding. Not only are they reassuring, but they allow the breeder to view each puppy and how it matures, allowing a thorough assessment of the success of the litter and breeding programme.

While some families have been known to consider requests for updates intrusive (I've seen posts on this forum to that affect), the majority love sharing their delight in their new puppy. We always strongly encourage continued contact from our families, and indeed have made some firm friends over the years. While the number of updates does decrease over time, we generally encourage updates on the puppy's birthday, and Christmas and have not been disappointed by the response.

I always ask for updates on my babies & if I dont hear from th new owners I contact them ,!!!!!most of my new owners keep in contact ,& many have become good friends .

My belief is that the pup is mine & will always be a part of me ,even though smeone else has the privilage of caring for my baby.
