The Vic whippet assoc. strongly advise against buying through newspapers and say they're all from puppy farmers, unless they specify VCA registered.

As I am no longer a member of the Vic whippet assoc. if I was to breed another litter the newspaper would probably be one of the places I might advertise, oh and of DOL of course.

Hi. I bought my "pedigreed and papered" dog as a pup from a registered breeder advertising on Petlink. The breeder turned out to be a BYB. I only went to that source to buy my dog because I found the breeders I met to be very unapproachable - after reading some of the articles on this site I can understand why. Of course if I had of known about pups being advertised on Dogzonline I would have gone through with one of them. I really think it is the luck of the draw as to who you meet. Anyway I love my dog dearly and I would not swap her, even with her little problems. It would be good to see more breeders advertise in the Trading Post as people often don't know where to go to look for a good breeder, and the Trading Post would be a good start.

I agree about advertising right alongside of the BYB, pet shops and puppy farmers. I believe they are competition, and aren’t particularly getting any in places like the TP and Gumtree. These places can be a lot of peoples 1st and only port of call to buy a dog and if that is the case that’s where they will get one or at a pet shop. If they saw a registered breeder with health tested dogs it gives them another option. They might even find a breed that they had never heard of before that may be suited to their lifestyle. It’s all about choices and education. With any luck registered breeders doing the right thing could flood their market and they may hopefully move on.

It would be nice to have a section specifically for registered breeders though as if I was to know they were advertising I would want to just look at their adverts only because I personally find it upsetting looking at some that are in there now. Others that didn’t know the difference would have the option to look at both and hopefully see there is a difference in how dogs are being bred and where to buy from. It may well make registered purebreed breeders look more approachable.

I said no, i would not buy from a breeder who advertised in the TP. NOT because they are advertising in the TP, but because I know the type of dog I am after and who breeds them.

I DO however think it would be great if there were more ads from registered breeders in there though. IMO one of the biggest problems for RB's is the perception (that I shared until a few years ago) that they are breeding dogs that they consider to be 'better' than what the average person need. Most people just don't get that the vast majority of dogs from RB's go to pet homes and would not consider going to a RB for a family pet.

All that said I can also see that for most RB's the TP would not be a cost efficient way of finding homes for their dogs.

In my chosen breed, I would not even contemplate breeding until I have a full list of at least 10 buyers all well vetted and pre approved.

It is rare to even see a litter advertised anywhere, even the Trading Post.

How do breeders who have to advertise to sell puppies have adequate time to do all the necessary buyer checks ?

It may be best to simply not breed unless you have adquate number of buyers ready to go, rather than advertise and create impulse puppy buying by the general public.

I'm a pet owner and yes I would buy or look for puppies on the trading post.

ut you do as so many of the general public have no idea about ethical registered breeders. How are the general public supposed to know about ethical registered breeders if they only advertisments they see are those of PF, BYB & pet shops? So many of the general public has no clue that there are canine associations, breed clubs or even websites like DOL. If they have no clue and there are no adverts by ethical registered breeders how are they going to find one or even be educated that there is a better alternative to buying from a petshop, BYB or PF?

Well said Puggy and totally agree. I think because so many of us on here are dog fanciers and have this knowledge we forget that the general public do not. The general public I guarantee if they had a choice to go down to the pet shop and buy a pure bred pup (without papers or a cross breed) pay for it on the spot and have that puppy home the same day etc they would chose that over reading about breeders, deciding which breeder is the best, visiting that breeder, visiting the pups and viewing the parents etc which could be miles away from their home.

It's the truth like it or not convenience over rides breeders.

SBT your dogs may be excellent top quality but what does Joe Blow care about that? He already knows he wants a staffy. He hasn't done too much research into the dog knows the basics. He knows what he's willing to pay. He doesn't know the benefits of buying a purebred dog so why would he care breeder or pet shop? To him if the sign on the window says purebred it's purebred. It's highly unlikely (unfortunately) that Joe Blow is going to buy a pup from you.

You'd be surprised at the number of average Joe's who do actually care what their next dog will look like, act like and the parents from which it came. You might also be surprised that average Joe can recognise a quality dog when he sees it.

Most of our pups over the years have gone to average Joe, who is looking for a pet and as I've said previously, they come wanting a pedigree with papers and the guarantees that come with it.

I would buy from a breeder that advertiesd in the trading post but I would still be very careful who I buy from.

You would need to be careful regardless. Some of the most bling bling website are masks to the dogiest of breeders, as are black and white small print ads.

As your average pet owner I think it would be good to see more reputable breeders advertise in newspapers/trading post. As from my experience that’s the first place I looked at when I was 12 years old in the 80's when we purchased a Collie. I didn’t know any better, I thought that was the only place to find a puppy. The breeder was a lovely lady, very helpful. I chose the pup. She gave us feeding info and a photo copy of a pedigree full of champions, there were so many generation. She also gave us a blue paper that she said we needed to put the dogs name on and our name and address and pay $10 and send it in the post back to the Canine council. My sister and I did send this through the post but never got anything back we probably didn’t do it right. The dog had one testicle and had a hearing problem. This didn’t mean anything to us he was our beloved pet. He was a great dog overall and lived to 9 years old.

Dog #2

Purchased from an ad in the trading post this time (this time I was in my twenties). Called the breeder went over to visit. We were to enter through the garage where the garage was converted to a living area and the pups were brought in bouncing happily and happy to greet us. Very clean and brushed pups. (I didn’t realise, full of fleas until I got home with the chosen pup). The breeder showed us pictures of the champions and said their son was showing them now. I had a strange feeling thinking why the pups were brought to us instead of us going to see them in their living area which was not inside there home. This breed being an inside dog.

This dog was never able to be house trained (toilet trained). I always thought it might have been the environment that she might have been kept in for the first 12 weeks of her life. I could be wrong. I was a bit of a nightmare. She never had any health issues and she was desexed.

Dog #3 Our schnauzer that we have now, yes this was a BYB purchase from the trading post. Called, went to visit. All the dogs, two adults and pups lived inside a house with a doggie door access to the yard. I said, how do you keep the house so clean? he said the pups follow the parents and they learn to go toilet outside. We had no problem toilet training him. He is desexed. He is a very healthy dog no complaints so far he is know almost 9 years old.

My point being that more reputable breeders should advertise then common average pet buyers might get better educated quicker and then learn to expect a high standard (This doesn't mean all dogs must live inside to be of high standard) when purchasing a new pet instead of going through bad experiences buying from some not so good registered breeders and then settling for a pet from a BYB, who really looks like they care and love their dogs.

My next family addition will be from a reputable breeder who really cares about their dogs. I am a recent member to this forum and appreciate learning so much just from reading your responses.

I advertise in the TP and have for a number of years. For all the reasons previously stated. I also have a waiting list but sometimes my pups don't fill the requirements eg. all black litter but buyers want fawn.

In the additional comment part I state why people should buy from a registered breeder.

Having just recently taken over a secretary og our breed club I am shocked by the lack of knowledge the general public has. I have had people ring me and say, " I bought a pup from ??????in ??????. And that's it. No surname, no papers, no idea of the prefix. Or people who have bought pups from a "registered breeder" but no papers and they aren't aware of the fact that all pups have to come with papers in Vic.

I am now considering overhauling our info on the website and advising people to make sure they have the breeder's name in full and their VCA registration number and prefix before thay go any further with purchasing a puppy.

You would also not believe the number of people who do not have a reciept or a contract of sorts.
