A MAN died after a horrific head-on crash south of Cardwell yesterday as his uninjured faithful blue heeler, Bundy, wandered around aimlessly looking for its master.

The accident closed the Bruce Highway for six hours.

Cardwell man Graham Rae, 66, was killed after colliding head-on with a 19-year-old female P-plater about 7.30am near Damper Creek.

Initial police investigations suggest the P-plater, from Cannonvale near Airlie Beach, had tried to overtake a semi-trailer while travelling north on the Bruce Highway.

Emergency crews were tending to Mr Rae's blue heeler, which had been found at the scene.

The dog was taken to Cardwell police station while authorities searched for a relative who might be able to take care of him.

However, an Ingham paramedic, who took care of the dog at the scene, has agreed to look after him if an owner cannot be found.

The woman was flown to Townsville Hospital with a fractured pelvis, wrist and ankle.

 How sad for Bundy - but amazing he survived, and :( for the paramedic who has offered him a home!
