Male Or Female For Second Dog?

 Share

Recommended Posts

I have a 6 month old male GSP. At some point we would like to get another dog (next year).

We have previously had two male (desexed) GSP's many years ago. They were about 3 years apart in age. we never had any issues with them in the couple of years that we had to the two of them.

This time we would possibly consider a different breed (English Springer Spaniel) but if we decided against that then it would be another GSP or possibly English Pointer.

Should we get another male (new dog would be desexed regardless of gender) or would a female be better?

Would it depend on what breed we get ie if its a smaller breed dog get a female but if its the same breed get a male?????

I've only ever experienced having two males together so was just interested in what things I needed to consider.

I have heard alot of people say that two Males do not get along as well as two females of one male and one female.

Jet has only been around other females and I have had no problems.

I have had males that live together peacefully and females that get along and also had pairs that didn't. There's no guarantee that any two dogs will get along, but a male and female combination usually give you the best odds of sucess. More important than gender is to make sure the dogs are complimentary in terms of energy, intensity and play styles. Similar size is good to aim for, but it doesn't matter too much of one is slightly bigger or smaller than the other.

When we had decided to get a second dog, our first being male, I asked the vet and her answer was that the best is one of each sex, the second best is two males and the worst is two females. We ended up getting another male puppy, and have not had any problems. When our old boy passed, we again got another male puppy, who is now 2.5 yrs old.

Well you know I've got my 2 boys and they are perfect with each other, we prefer male animals so got another boy .... only 1 of ours is desexed (Archie is only 6mths old) ... so no issues here
