Michelleva
Does anyone have any tips on getting a puppy used to grooming? Our sheltie pup obviously doesn't have a lot of hair yet, she's 4 1/2 months but she needs to get used to the idea of grooming. She gets very jumpy when I go near her with a brush. At the moment I'm using a really soft brush while she's sitting on my lap all relaxed and happy. I give her a treat and tell her how good she is, but she's still not happy about it. She's trying to pull away and get off my lap. Any idea's.
Dogsfevr
Never groom on your lap. You need to find a raised area(washing machine.bench ) & place a non slip mat & brush dog only standing up.Start now teaching the word stand /stay Dont go over board in talking & treating you dont need to bribe for grooming but its your body langugae that makes or breaks it. Place pup on table first off ,say stand ,run your hands over pup or quick run over with the brush ,place on the ground & good dog. Never place pup on the floor whilst having a tainty ,if pup plays up just hold safely & wait till dummy spit is finished & then place on the floor. laps are for cuddles not grooming ,pup needs a "grooming" place where you cheack for knots, burs & brushing especially when older & in a full coat.
