Peeing Inside

Hey guys, Pablo has discovered a new exciting bad habit he's decided to pick up....cocking his leg on anything and everything inside!

I dont know why he's started doing this all of a sudden and its driving me crazy. None of the other dogs wee inside and we have a doggy door im trying to get him used to but he's taken out regulariy. Even after he comes inside from doing a million wees, its like he saves just enough so he can do more inside.

Ive caught him in the act several times and each time I put him straight out on the grass but this doesnt seem to be working.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

first of all, if that's Pablo in the little picture there, he is one cutie...

I have a few questions though. Firstly, does your dog challenge you in any other ways or does he respect you as leader? Does he walk properly on a lead, behave around meal times, obey you etc.

When you say you catch him in the act and put him straight outside, do you also tell him no and ensure he understands that you disapprove of the behaviour?

Do you have him trained to go on command? And do you give the command when you take him outside?

I have an entire male too and I can tell you it's possible to train them not to mark in the house, but you do need to ensure your dog knows you're the boss, with no doubt, and then also that they again have no doubt about what you do and don't want them to do.

I should firstly state I got Pablo at 5 months of age and he had NO obedience whatsoever. In the 2 months ive had him he's learnt sit and stay and will walk on a leash no problem now. My other 2 males (and one female) are all desexed so ive never had this problem and they're all what i would consider to be trained quite well and respect me as the leader.

Pablo on the other hand is proving to be difficult. Ive never owned a Chi and as he's the smallest thing on the planet i find it hard to repremand him.

When he marks inside i will tell him NO in a very stern voice, place him on the grass and wait til he goes but have not yet taught him a command to "go".

There lies your problem.. no matter what the size, he is still a dog who needs to be reprimanded when he has done the wrong thing, or else he will keep doing it. Would suggest you possibly go back to the start with his toilet training and teach him a command to go outside.

My dog tried to mark inside someones house once, he was told in no uncertain terms it was not the done thing and has never done it since.

IMO marking inside is completely different to toilet training, and it is not on.

what ive read and followed about toileting dogs is this:

keep taking them outside and then you have to know where they are when they inside...all of the time

so

i used to tie a lead round me and keep the dog with me the whole time

or tether him to a heavy table or a hook in the skirting board

with a basket to lie in

ifn theyre unreliable then you have to know whats going to break the habit

neutralise the area hes peeing on with a pee off type product or use biozet mixed with water to break down all three enzymes that dogs sense in urine and return to

but the key is supervision

little dogs can go in places you wont dream of

so you must know where your dog is all of the time..until the habit is broken

Hi Percyk,

Regarding the BioZet mixed with water - do you make it up as a paste, or dissolve it in water? I looked at Pee Off at the vet, and it was $26. I have some BioZet at home, so I want to try that. He is 14wks, and used to go out for toileting. After a few rainy nights, and VERY chilly mornings, he has now reverted back to doing "both" in the laundry on the tiles. I normally mop with disinfectant, but I realise now that isn't getting the scent/enzymes away. I want to see if removing his "scent" with BioZet will stop him doing it every night. Thanks.

This is probably not helpful, but I must share it As a kid, we had a Cocker Spaniel who came in the lounge room one night and cocked his leg on mum's chair. My father saw him just as he lifted his leg, jumped of his chair and booted the Cocker up the bum and yelled, "you don't pee in here you dirty bugger"

I must say, that was the first and last time it happened

This is probably not helpful, but I must share it As a kid, we had a Cocker Spaniel who came in the lounge room one night and cocked his leg on mum's chair. My father saw him just as he lifted his leg, jumped of his chair and booted the Cocker up the bum and yelled, "you don't pee in here you dirty bugger"

i mix the biozet in water

i mop up what i can...with paper towels then set to work

if it is on carpet i work in squares..not in circles cos that rubs the carpet the wrong way

so i work horizontally then vertically, mopping up the excess as you go

i have used warm water but if it is for faeces then i start with cold then warm...cold first so that the proteins dont set in hot water ...you need a hot solution to break down the fat later that is still in the poo stain

works great with vomit too...after you scrape up the the solids

always work inwards...dont spread the stain..you dont want stomach acids moving in and outward from the stain
