Crate Training

I am getting a guide dog puppy in three weeks time! YAY!!! We have been told it is a black girl. They have to have a health check the day before, so we won't know for sure whether we will have her yet.

It is a requirement of guide dogs that puppies be allowed to sleep inside, so I will be attempting to crate trian the pup.

Can anyone provide a link to a good website or provide some good instructions on how best to achieve this.

Thanks

Check out the info on www.dogstardaily.com for info on setting up a crate and teaching your pup to use it - and at the same time housetraining and also chewtoy training. Just be aware that the info was written for the USA where many dogs spend their time indoors when people aren't home - so for some things you'd probably use your yard instead or as well. You need to read all four to get the full picture. 1. http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/puppy...m-amp-doggy-den 2.

http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/error...hewtoy-training and 4.

http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/home-alone. Of course check with the association whose pup you are raising about what they need you to do and avoid.

There are a few videos on teaching a dog to accept and enjoy a crate including http://www.dogstardaily.com/videos/introdu...havior-problems and even a whole video and book on crate games to get your dog loving his crate : )

Hope this helps get you started.

You should check with the association about whether they advise the pup to be crate trained. Have you considered whether they will have any information sheets to you on techniques.

Thanks for your answers.

Guide Dogs will be providing a crate, I have already spoken to them and they say they recommend crate training. Basically, they want the dog trained to be able to sleep inside all night without having an accident.

I assume when I go to pick up the puppy they will provide further information on training etc, there are also regular trianing days for puppy raisers to attend.

I thought I would just read up before, so I can buy anything extra I might needs and get the house set up.
