Weird Question

Hi there?

Weird question - at what age can an entire male dog get a bitch on heat pregnant? My little guy Chase 16wks has started trying to ride Sophie - it's kinda hilarious - he's maybe 9kg and Sophie is about 38kg - and she hasn't told him to bugger off yet because she's being gentle with the puppy! She just looks at me with this confused look on her face and wonders why the puppy is having a seizure near her back? lol. She's desexed and i'm sure at his age he doesn't know what he's doing but nonetheless i'm curious?

humping doesn't have to always be about sex - it can be about dominance. My girl sometimes tries to hump by boy (both are desexed). I was horrified when it happened!

Yeah I know he's not trying to mate with her, but then I don't think he's really being dominant either, I think he's just discovering some puppy instincts! He's been doing it since he was 9wks old, i'm just curious about how early on male dogs are attracted to bitches in heat, and how early they're capable of siring litters?

humping isnt a normal puppy thing & not something i would find funny either.

I owuld be addressing the issue now before you regret it ,sounds like one little dominant male

Oh really? I'd been told that this wasn't uncommon as he's just figuring his way around things - apparently his dad was the same. He's only tried it with his little sisters and with Sophie once. Thing is I don't want to yell at him as he's possibly going to be a stud in the future and i've been told some male dogs will then be too afraid to "do the deed" if they're discouraged too vehemently. The couple of times it's happened i've just distract him with something to chew on or by giving him a sit or drop command and he gives it up straight away in favour of some mental stimulation - also he's only done if the once with Sophie, the other few times it was his litter mates when he'd not seen them for a few days.

I will watch this though to make sure it doesn't become a dominance thing or a regular occurence - I don't want non-stop humping. If he's persistant we will have him chemically castrated.

Anyway that isn't my question .................... anyone know the answer?

There is a difference between dominant humping and serving a bitch in season. I told my dog off for humpng as a pup as did the other dogs the few times he tried it and it made no difference to his ability to perform. The other thing you don't want to end up with is a stud dog who is so used be allowed to mount anything so he tries whether the bitch is ready or not.

Once a pups testis are fully descended and developed there is always the chance that he is fertile. I have heard of BCs siring a litter at 6 months so earlier may be possible too.

Wow! I had heard 9 months but yeah - Chase already has his balls pretty much fully descended so i did wonder. He's not allowed to throw a leg over anything, he'd be told off if he tried it on me but for the most part i don't want to correct him harshly so much as tell him "not now" and coax him to shift his attention elsewhere.

Depends on the breed and the individual dog - small breed dogs could be fertile as early as 4.5 - 5 months. I know of a Stafford dog that sired a litter at just on 6 months old. Border Collies, probably around the same age. I have a dog pup here who was very interested but totally confused by a bitch in heat, he was not quite 4 months old. She totally ignored him, didn't flag or stand for him, he never tried to mount her though.

Personally I'd introduce him to a bitch who will give him what-for and teach him some manners.

Lol - problem is he doesnt try it with them! He's a sleaze bag! His little sisters ganged up on him and told him to get stuffed which was good, but i was standing inside looking out the window at Sophie and she just sat there before wandering off! I was saying "tell him to get nicked!" but she loves him i guess - stupid dog!

I know of two different Belgians that mated with their own mothers at 4 months. In Borders it is usually more like 6 months before they are fertile and interested, but earlier is certainly possible.

Your puppy has a blue eye so I am surprised that you consider him a stud prospect. It is considered a major fault in the breed unless the dog is a merle. Every breeder I know would only limit register a black puppy with a blue eye.

Regardless of that, no male puppy should get away with humping other dogs, people or objects. It should not be considered polite behaviour by any dog and needs to be discouraged. It is really very unusual for a Border to hump anything unless they are actually doing a mating. I have owned 6 entire male stud dogs and have never had a one do it.

Perhaps try a noise like AAHH, then distract and reward him when he complies. No need for heavy tactics but just let him know it is not acceptable.
