nicolatu
Hi guys, As the topics says, my BC puppy doesn't sleeps when he is outside his crate. He is very tired (can see from his half-open eyes and sleeps immediately when put into his crate) but he just keeps playing with his toys or find something to do. Is there a way to let him sleep while he is outside his crate? How do you know when the puppy knows that when i click, there is food? PS: we got a bed for him to sleep on as well. Thanks Nic Edited May 4, 2010 by nicolatu
GoldenGirl85
Whats wrong with just letting him sleep in his crate? keep the door open and when he is tired he will go in for a sleep when you start clicker training you need to 'load' the clicker, so all you do is click and treat and click and treat, when the puppy reacts to the click (even just an ear prick) you know they have associated that with food
nicolatu
We have to lock the crate or else he won't sleep. We tried leaving the crate door open for him to go back and sleep but didn't work. We even ignored him and let him play with his toys on his own. We timed it once and he took 5 hours before he goes to sleep in a corner. He just won't sleep and my gf's previous puppies sleep all the time. I am just worried that he doesn't sleep enough. I also tried massaging and talking in a calm voice to him but next minute he is running around. When he is tired and we don't put him in his crate, he will just run around like crazy. My gf and I think he feels uncomfortable because he is tired but he doesn't know he is tired. I load up the clicker for a few times a day. He will look at me so I guess it worked. GoldenGirl85
You should only need to load the clicker once, now you are just giving him treats for nothing When he is tired enough he will sleep, what breeds were your gfs previous puppies? Im guessing they wernt a working breed, while yes he is still a baby and needs sleep, he is a very active breed and is very stimulated by the world around him to care about sleep, which is why he goes to sleep when you lock him in...there is nothing else to do. Just leave him to it, he is in a very exciting world but he will sleep when he is tired enough
