Having a DA dog no matter what the breed, and there's plenty of them just makes it a little harder when out in public with other dog owners who think all dogs are dog friendly, doesn't work that way in nature and sure as hell doesn't work at the beach!

There are plenty of DA little dogs out there, yapping their little heads off and seriously wanting to kill other dogs, but it is rare that these little dogs cause more than an annoyance. Their behaviour is unacceptable to me, yet society does generally accept their DA behaviour.

Contrast that with a large dog (of any breed) that has the same attitude. There you have a dog that should be muzzled when out in public, and should be kept in a very secure enclosure when unattended. It is a dog that will kill other people's dogs, because it has the physical capacity and the instinct do do it.

Pitbull people need to address this instead of attempting to invalidate people's fears. What are responsible owners of these dogs prepared to concede if they really are committed to keeping their breed going in this country?

I have never seen a pitbull as out of control as i have a SWF, even DA dogs don't exhibit aggression to all dogs.

Of course we're going to try to invalidate peoples fears especially if they've been formed by mass hysteria. And what is it that we're supposed to concede? we all know they can be DA, anyone who owns any bull breed and doesn't admit so is a fool, big deal, that is why it's more about education and responsible ownership.

They may well have been used as cattle dogs, Heavy Paws.. just like the Rottweiler was a cart dog and the Labrador is a Gun Dog...

BUT.. there greater history is that of a Pit fighter. THAT is the more prominant origin of the ABPT and THAT is the behaviour you are fighting against in this breed (and a few other bull breeds). Some breeds ARE more inclined to show dog aggression and even if they don't start it.. cause massive injuries when they finish it.

Almost any Staffy breeder will tell you that their dogs have a predisposition to being narky with other dogs BUT will also explain that in the right environment, with the right family and with A LOT of socialisation as youngsters, reduce the incidence of dog-dog aggression enormously...

Pitty owners rarely do it.. they tend to deflect onto other information about how they are wonderful with kids, a few have saved people's lives, were originally bred for cattle herding.. all great things, but again I say.. the refusal to accept and discuss (with the exception of a few here) the base fact that APBT's DO have a genetic predisposition to dog aggression.

I'm not a supporter of BSL ... but I'm not a supporter of glossing over bad traits in breeds that NEED to bred out and/or culled.

Thats reducluis. How many APBT owners do YOU personaly know that deny there DA.

And for the American pit bull terrier to be king of the fighting pit while still being able to live with a family is great in itself.

And coming from their fighting background and YES, are still able and do save life's and are great around kids ect is an inspiration in itself.

The are plenty of DA dogs of different breeds and I have thought on many occassions if my GSD's behaved like some of the SWF's I would be battling to physically restrain them :o But not all DA dogs go for the win at all costs as some bull breed, Pit cross or whatever they are, do to cause horrific injuries as often which is what the general public hears about and taints the breed. People involved with the APBT breed are generally saying that they shouldn't be DA and make too many excuses and what others are saying, is that these sensationalised attacks are not by Labradors or Golden Retrievers, they are 9 times out of 10 a Bull breed of some description.

The General public from what ive experienced are so to speak Anti BSL, or believe that its all in "how there raised", my beliefs also, and one of the reasons i believe the APBT is NOT a lost cause.

ive walked my dog/s through the city many times, big dog parks, small dog parks and the local streets and had nothing but good experiences and comments.

Honestly, how is anyone going to stand there and say how viscous and a man killer a breed of dog is when someone has one sitting next to them doing the exact opposite, Some people need to see to believe.

And i have no time for people who slag the breed yet wont spare a minute to actually meet one person and make a judgment call for them self.

The general "dog hating" public which makes up a large proportion of the community I think you will find don't like the APBT. There was a poll on Ninemsn not long ago and it was like 85% voted against the keeping of APBT's which wasn't a good indication I recall at the time???. Understandable given all the media hype, but opinions of the uneducated public is the concern I have of the breed's future creating a major brick wall when promoting the breed. My wife was never too flash on the APBT years ago until she was told the dog she had spent an afternoon playing with along with our dogs was a Pitbull :o I personally from knowing several Pits over the years were all great dogs, none were DA whatsoever

So true, unfortunately BB. Certain people have to face the fact that their beloved choice of breed (namely of the bully variety) is capable of inflicting serious injuries and that they do require more careful restraints.

Every dog is capable of serious injury, you must really hate bull breeds, do you have some vendetta against them? 'cause all you seem to post is negative, bigoted, one sided comments.

All dogs need training, it's that thing that most owners seem to negate, especially owners of dogs that think their dog is a little person.

There's a hundred breeds that can do as much harm as any bull breed could but i don't see you slagging them off?

No, I do not hate them. I just am of the belief that APBT are more capable of causing serious injuries than any other breed. And I don't have any vendetta against them. As I said before, I have owned boxers (amongst other large breeds) before and will do so again, the boxer is a treat of a dog with a sense of humour and not as prone as a pibull to be DA.

And im sure a boxer could inflict the same amount of damage if not more then an APBT, there more then double the size of an APBT. But im sure you rasied your boxer lovingly as we do out APBT's, therefore usually without a problem.

I saw a red nosed pitbull at the vet and he was far more solid than any boxer I have seen and almost the same height. The APBT was an awesome looking dog, very muscly with a well developed head. Looked very similar to the photo you have on your avatar, APBT. Does your pitbull have amber eyes?

I mean the actual colour of the iris. This particular pitbull had yellowish eyes. When I looked at its eyes they were basically yellowish with the black pupil.

My parents bred boxers and i grew up with them sleeping in my bed, great dogs.

However mine were extremely DA, both bitches and more hardwork than the bull breeds i've had. my sister currently has a 4 year old boxer 34kgs, bad tempered, DA, HA.. no never to be bred, and only started these traits about a year ago.. so actually in my experience the boxers have been more DA than apbt's. And as for inflicting more injuries, no more than any other dog of it's weight and size.

My neighbours rotti who was absolutely enormous and would chew through a cow leg in under a minute could do way more damage than any pit i've met, but i'm not on here giving rottis a hard time.

Don't believe all the hype, they're just a dog, albeit one that needs a committed responsible owner, as every dog deserves.

Is the photo of the APBT on your avatar your own? The pitbull I saw at the vet looks very much like the one on your avatar and hence I wanted to know if it had the same coloured eyes.

If it is true that boxers can be extremely DA then why is it that one never really hears of boxers mauling people or other dogs in comparison to pitties? I am just trying to understand.

APBT were responsible for 8 attacks last year in QLD, some 400 less than other breeds .... yet they're considered the worst..?

Not sure where boxers came in, however with their boystrous nature and the laws that state what constitues an attack (ie if someone feels threatened by your dog they can complain and that's it your dog can be classed dangerous) it wouldn't surpise me if they had a few mentions.
