Bit Of A Brush Question

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

I am in the process of purchasing a new slicker brush and a comb for Sally on the advice of my groomer.

I have been doing some research on similar topics on this website and have found a few names and wondered what people thought of them?

So far I have seen recommended:

Doggyman slicker

Vista professional comb

Lawrence brand of brushes

Les Poochs

Would others recommend any of these and if so, where do they purchase them from?

Any input would be great

oh, am not looking for a coat stripper like a mars coat king more of a day to day sort of brush :)

I love Les Pooches and will never be without one again. They are expensive and to the best of my knowledge are only available via mail order from the USA.

If not able to get Les Pooches, I'll go for Doggyman any day. Doggyman are available through Pet Network, Petcetera and most other quality stores.

Combs I can't help you with, I have a beautiful black ionised comb that I brought home from America with me and I cannot for the life of me find out its name or remember where I got it from.

But any quality greyhound comb would be suitable.

I use the Lawrence Soft Touch slicker on my BCs - I used to have the normal 1 but it was too harsh so I bought the soft 1 instead.

As well as that I have a Plush Puppy Metro Static brush and a collie comb - no idea the brand on that 1, had it for yonks.

ETA: Have an assortment of other stuff as well but they are the basic essentials that I use :)

No doubt the LesPoochs are the best. As a pro groomer for 25 yrs i cannot find better. The double silver one is my personal favourite all rounder.

For combs , Chris Christensen every time for me.

Pet Edge in the US have a flexible slicker that a few of us have tried and it is fine. Fraction of a the cost of Les Pooch. Knots glide out, it is easier on the dog's skin and easier on your arms.

For combs - Spratts from Diamond Edge in the UK.

You don't need a slicker for an everyday brush for a Border. The best everyday brush is a bristle and nylon, preferably a Mason Pearson. This is what most of us that show Borders use .So long as they dogs don't chew it, you should get at least 30 years out of one so the price is well worth it. My original one purchased in 1984 is still going strong and grooming dogs every week. Oh, and the dogs love them. Mine push each other out of the way to get brushed.

You can buy them online from Peter's of Kensington. The best size for a Border is the one called "popular".

Plush Puppy have pretty good cheaper version of the bristle and nylon as well.

Besides the brush, a Collie Comb and a two sided comb are handy additions. I hardly ever use a slicker.
