Ha, I was so confused when I kept seeing the name Ava used and it wasn't about my girl :D

I did puppy school then obedience for our Ava. I was only going to do obedience school, but the season didn't start until she was something like 16 weeks old, and I wanted to get her out and doing something before then - so puppy school it was. I have trained our older dog previously, so just used puppy school for socialisation. She graduates from beginner's obedience this weekend :(

Ava's a beautiful name, but like you I was a little confused when I saw another Ava puppy around.

I feel a bit guilty about Elbie's name. His original name was L.B. i.e. Little Bastard for when he was being a brat. He's Elbie when he's cute

Wuffles - one of the other forum members also has a puppy named Ava - not a golden retriever though  It's a lovely name.

The puppies at our puppy class are awesome - and we don't know the names of any of their owners, just the puppies

Ava's still very young. When Elbie came to us, he already sat very nicely. Every time we turned around he was sitting there looking up at us with puppy dog eyes. We watched a lot of the youtube videos and found the techniques that seemed easiest to us and fitted them into our routine with Elbie. The thing is, puppies have a very short attention span so you can only train for a few minutes and you have to stop if they get frustrated. Elbie loves the obedience work though and you can really see him pondering things.

You should probably just be worrying about sit, drop and wait/stay at this point for Ava. If she's food motivated, then a good time to train her is around meal times. Elbie is SUPER SUPER eager to please at meal times. Good luck! :( Can't wait to see more photos. She is soooooo cute.

A few people arn't too sure on the name 'ava'. they want me to change it!

She's slowly getting the hang of 'sit' now - espically around dinner time! Last night i was preparing it and she sat right in the middle of the kitchen watching my every move.

I'll send you a message with some photos!

I don't think you can change her name now!!! It's already her name! :smashpc:

I saw the photos - oh my goodness, I wanted to hug my computer monitor she is so cute. I really wanted to get a labrador puppy or golden retriever puppy at first instance but my boyfriend (who is a cat person and normally doesn't like dogs) said that labs/goldies were too generic for him and he wanted something different :whip: Fortunately Elbie is adorable and as a young puppy looked quite labradorish

Congrats on the sit  Sit is actually kind of easy - you don't even have to push down on her rump. Usually if you hold a treat above her nose and lift it gradually she'll just naturally plonk her butt down in a sit :(

Hahaha! Yeah she is a cutie! she's growing so much. My last dog was a Jack Russell (long haired? never seen another one!) so this is a pretty big leap from that to her! She is happy ALL the time! She's this bouncing ball of energy! (oh and rips anything to shreds!)

You got lucky with Elbie - he is adorable!!

Thanks. She is sitting really good now. Its so cute watching her. I'll teach her, stop, stay, come and down and maybe roll over in time! She's pretty cluey already (we put a gate up to stop her getting into the rest of the house, we've tried 3 different ways, but each time she figures out how to move it. Sneaky bugger! think we have to get a baby gate!).

she starts puppy school soon! :) Hows elbie going with his?

We've been moving all of our stuff into our new house and we were considering getting baby gates but given how many heavy boxes we have, we're thinking of using the boxes to block off exits for the time being :)

Elbie had his last puppy class tonight and graduated :( He had to do a sit, a drop and one other trick. At firs the was so dementedly hyper and zoomie that we couldn't get him to do anything and the whole class was laughing at us - but eventually he settled down did his sit, drop, beg, high five, shake hands and rollover. Phew.

Obedience classes start at the end of the month which should be fun! Have you got any video clips of Ava yet? Also, if you are shy and don't want to start your own thread you could always post your Ava pics here and we could call it the Elbie and Ava thread :(

I love doggies with tuxedos :)

hee! gorgeous!

My OH loves Elbie's white patch - it's a different texture to the rest of his fur and comes to a strange sort of ridge. My OH jokes that Elbie has a faux-hawk on his chest or says that we have a Rhodesian Ridgechest :thanks:

Elbie's ears remain in a twilight zone between up and down ... each day we wait to see what the final position is going to be

OMG he's so cute and so little! My puppy is only 11 weeks and is already really big!

Hee! Do you have a current photo of Mindy? Next to something like a chair or something so I can get an idea as to perspective? :(

Have you ever read a book called Bringing Up Beauty? It's a gorgeous little Canadian book about a girl looking after a guide dog puppy. Very heartwarming ... I don't think I could ever be strong enough to be a guide dog puppy raiser :'(
