KumaAkita
I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaacccckk! did ya miss me?? I'm beyond buggered, resulting from being awake for the last 28 hours or so. Vietnam was great, we had so much fun, but i won't deny that we got to the stage with a few days to go where we wished that we could be Dorothy - click our heels and be home. We had a bout of gastro from a dodgy dinner at the end of the first week, and later found out that the pollution is so bad that even the locals are starting to get sick from the food. It's rather awful. But, I did my best to stimulate their economy Kuma seems to have enjoyed his holiday. The peeps at the kennel told us that he enjoyed his daily play time and would do a lap of the yard before diving into the dam. They found his love of water as hilarious as we do. The owner told me that he is the nicest akita they've looked after and was very well behaved - proud dog mamma moment there he's come back a few kilos heavier, he seems chunkier... He also seems to be eating well... He has plonked on the cool tiles and I spent the afternoon listening to the tandem snores of he and his daddy. So... I'm lazy and haven't kept up... What's been happening? Oh, and the Vietnamese government have banned facebook so I only got access in Hue for about 10 mins (the planets must have aligned and allowed server access) so haven't kept up with anything!! OK, Hoover now knows how to drop dead. The doggies don't die at the same time but it's still pretty cute. Video .

Genabee
Welcome home KA!!! We missed you! KTB - That video is hilarious!!! It was like watching a slow motion duo dance number! They might not have been in sync, but they sure had the timing evenly spaced!!! We in the industry refer to that as a 'canon' effect!
lilli_star
I really think I should post Ruby down to you, Koala, so you can teach her lots of cool tricks! Seeing as this is technically a photo thread, here are some photos. Taken last Saturday night- Ruby fell asleep with a toy in her mouth This is what I saw when I looked out the back window the other morning... Ruby is too much of a princess to sit on wet grass (Oh the humanity!), so I usually put out a cardboard box for her to destroy/sit on. I was getting ready to pack my lunch on Monday morning when I looked out the window and saw that Miss Roo was cold, and had dragged out one of her blankets to lay on as well! And look! An Easter rabbit! Roo!

Max#1
My favourite is the second outtake.... And the video is extra cute. ;) Welcome back KA. And see you in another week once you've caught up! Some people round here sure are chatty....... We just had our first team training for flyball. Went pretty well. Any mistakes were mine and not his. I have a lot to learn it would seem! Poor little pooch is completely tuckered out! I think he just had a bout of reverse sneezing, I better go look that up again.....
lilli_star
*Ahem* Cutest Dog in Show Voila! 3rd in Waggiest Tail and 3rd in Best Trick. Swag includes 4 bags of food, 3 tennis ball toys and a $10 voucher to the local bakery She was so good- and for that, I really must thank the makers of the Sporn Harness. You are truly geniuses ;) Before we went to the show I took Roo to the vet to check out her itchiness. She was SO good throughout the consultation- especially when he- gross bit coming up- checked her anal glands and then later when he trimmed her claws. He couldn't find any irritation though but he gave her a shot of cortisone anyway. I noticed her scratching a little while ago though, but not as much as before. She's fast asleep now- she's had a very big day! Will have to wait and see what happens with the itching. She's on Comfortis, so it shouldn't be fleas, but then it's a bad time for fleas, so who knows? I had a lady whose daughter I taught ask me today what breed Ruby was. When I said Labrador, she sounded very surprised. "Really? But she's so thin! I've only ever seen them fat!" :D Edited March 26, 2011 by lilli_star
aussielover
Ruby is looking so grown up (and shiny)! Edited March 27, 2011 by aussielover
lilli_star
Hi Aussie! Good to see you in here Roo had lots of compliments yesterday on how shiny she is. Must be her fancy Labrador food and sardines If it's okay with you, I'd be interested to hear how you and Mindy go with Steve. You've put so much time and effort into training Mindy, and she has always sounded like such a good puppy, that I'm surprised to hear she has any real issues. Roo met some disabled people yesterday and she was so good with them- really gentle and calm. Magical Dog Trainer Lady told me a couple of months ago that Roo would make a good Delta dog (MDTL is really into that too). It's something I'm considering, especially after yesterday, but not right now.
aussielover
She doesn't have any real issues, just a few minor things i'd like to fix: she is not good to walk on the lead- once she sniffs something its really hard to get her to move on and she will try to drag you to the spot. She is ok if you correct her or ask her to look or go forward before she puts her head down to sniff but its kinda hard to be on the lookout all the time for possible smelly spots! her recall is good, but not perfect. I'd say its 95%, so a lot better than most other dogs, but i would prefer if it was 100%. she is scared of kids and will bark at them. She is getting much better with this and even approaching kids with her happy "wiggle body" but sometimes she still barks at really young kids (like toddlers) if they run up to her. she barks at night if she can hear someone in the house wandering around. I'm undecided as to whether this is a good thing or not- in a way its good because i know someone is wandering around my house during the middle of the night, but I also keep getting woken up and lose sleep! These last two problems lead me to believe she has some fear issues, she is also overly submissive to other dogs, even SWFs, in fact she is particularly scared of small dogs. she is scared of kittens too! I'm also interested in drive training so hopefully steve will be able to explain it to me and we can see if Mindy would be suitable. I also want Mindy to become a delta therapy dog! Her puppy school trainer thought she would make a good one because she is pretty calm but I have my doubts- she isn't too keen on kids and she doesn't appear to enjoy being patted by adults (maybe her allergies?). we'll see, the puppy trainer said they don't have to enjoy it, but they have to stay calm and still and tolerate it, which she does. lilli_star
Hmmm, that's interesting. Roo hasn't really had much to do with really little kids, apart from yesterday when she met half the population of town! But, I had her Sporn harness on and it made such a HUGE difference. It's actually the only time I've had it on Ruby "in public", the only other times being at dog school, but the one she wore then was a bit small for her anyway and she didn't like it. I wasn't going to take Ruby to the show without it on though- she would have been dreadful! I walk her around my neighbourhood on a flat collar and lead, but LLW is not one of our strengths and when you add all the new sight, sounds and smells of the show....well, you can imagine how it would have turned out And I know what you mean about the sniffing- Roo is especially bad around power poles Damn boy dogs! koalathebear
Max#1: Hope Max's reverse sneezing has passed. Our dogs certainly keep us on our toes constantly. That's great about flyball. Elbie gets 'tested' for agility on Wednesday - we shall see whether he makes the grade or needs to wait until the next intake. I really hope you can show us some video footage of Max at flyball soon lilli_star: Love the photos of Ruby with all of her loot. I hope all the fame, adulation and adoration hasn't gone to her head - will she still want to mingle with the GSD next door or is does she have her eye on the Best in ShowDog that she met at the local show?? Ruby isn't too thin - she looks just right. I was a wee bit unhappy with my brother today when he stood outside our house - he is allergic to dogs so since we got dogs, he can never come in our house again - and he was remarking that Elbie and Hooer were looking kind of lanky and leggy and he thought Hoover looked cuter when he was a shorter-legged, chunky monkey who looked like a tank :D aussielover: you'll have a great time with Steve, but to be honest, it doesn't sound like your problems are that severe! I do know what it's like to have niggling little Issues that you just want to resolve OH is tender-hearted and he doesn't like locking the dogs in their crates at night so when it's his turn to put the dogs to bed, he frequently doesn't zip up the crates. Funnily enough, they're very good about staying in their crates if they hear us wandering around at night - they'd bark like crazy if it was a stranger, but they seem ok with us wandering around. What's funny in the morning is that during the week, Elbie will come bounding into the room as soon as he hears our alarm. On weekends, he kind of waits until he hears us talking/laughing and then there will be a cautious nose around the doorway as if to see if it's ok to enter On Friday, I didn't realise that OH hadn't zipped him in his crate and I was in the spare room looking for clothes and turned around and saw Elbie standing in the doorway staring at me inquiringly. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with my two yet. Obedience trialling had never crossed my mind previously but Hoover seems to really enjoy his obedience lessons and he doesn't seem manically drivey so I'm going to see how things go with that - I have no idea if he'd be any good at agility. Elbie I suspect will be very good at agility once he calms down a little and doesn't get distracted by extraneous things. He's very responsive and smart. And my photo for the night - I love it when our two get into the same dog bed/crate together. It's just such a sweet thing for them to do and to me anyway, it demonstrates that they like each other Here they are in Elbie's soft crate in the kitchen on his brand new Dog Futon. The blanket is from OH tucking them in. Edited March 27, 2011 by koalathebear
lilli_star
What does reverse sneezing sound like? Koala, Roo definitely will not let fame go to her head- you saw the photos; she could care less Her hoomen on the other hand...well, lets just say I'll have a very captive audience in my class tomorrow morning, so they'll hear all about it whether they want to or not! :D I don't think Roo looks too thin, but I was a bit taken aback by what the lady said about Labradors. Of course we're all very protective of our doglets and their breed, which is why I understand completely about you feeling a bit unhappy about what your brother said. I guess you just have to brush it aside and put it down to him just not being a dog person (for obvious reasons), but it still stings. I love how Elbie and Hoover snuggle up together Mr Koala is such a sweetie for tucking them in No point tucking Roo in- she rolls around in her sleep too much! Last night I checked on her before I turned out the light and she was laying on her back fast asleep She's asleep at my feet right now and was just making little suckling noises- do your dogs still do that? I know Hoover and Elbie will do well in whatever they do- they are both so smart!

wuffles
You guys should see how skinny Ava is now since her "extreme water loss diet" ;) She had about 1/4 chicken and 3/4 kibble tonight so we're pretty much back to her normal diet finally. Now we just have to hope that the nasty bug stays away lilli_star, Ava still suckles in her sleep. She sticks her little tongue out and sucks. It's cute and creepy at the same time. Can't wait to start agility, yay fun doggy activities! Good to hear you might consider obedience trialling, KTB You'll have to come watch one of the upcoming trials. I think once we get our other two CCD passes we should be ready to go straight on to Novice... just a bit more work on heeling turns and the 'finish'... change of position we are fine (basically drop from a distance)... then after Novice it gets REALLY interesting
