wuffles
Heyyy, Ava isn't quirky... ok, maybe she is She does get on quite well with labs! There is a lab her age at our local dog park named Marvin and they are always chewing sticks together. dandy that is terrible news about Willow's litter mates. How horrible. Someone baiting my dogs is my worst nightmare...
aussielover
Hey all, I have a question for the canberra people- which vet do you use/recommend? I am thinking about doing a placement at one of the vets in canberra and want to know which ones are good! All the puppers are looking gorgeous! Lillistar- I would get another lab or aussie as some breeds don't seem to appreciate the lab play style and you want your pups to play together well. I'm thinking about getting a second dog also, I think Mindy would quite like it, we have babysat other peoples dogs before and she really likes having a friend and even shares the bed with them! I'd probably get an adult dog though probably a rescue from lab rescue or GR rescue or maybe even the pound (though some ppl here are very critical of pound rescues so not sure about that). KumaAkita
I have a question for the canberra people- which vet do you use/recommend? I am thinking about doing a placement at one of the vets in canberra and want to know which ones are good! We use Gungahlin Vet Clinic. They are great! The Vet Nurses are really nice, their Vets are kind and knowledgable. They have first class facilities. But most of all, Kuma likes going there. He one of the vet nurses and one of the vets. Last time he saw Kim the Vet, he gave her a wet sloppy kiss right on the mouth - don't think Kim was expecting that! :D Dandybrush - scary about your breeder's puppers. That's so sad. Some people are evil... Took Kuma for a walk this morning. He was going really well until we saw a fox. He was like "FOX !!!!!" and tried very hard to get it, but it was too fast and too far away for him to do anything. He was actually pretty good, once he worked out that he couldn't get it he gave up. I can't wait for the end of daylight savings on the weekend... for a little while at least my 5:30 am walks won't be in pitch black darkness. I've resorted to carrying a torch, because Kuma never fails to pick the darkest patch of grass upon which to do his business and I'm sick of swiping in the dark! koalathebear
I never have time to myself at home. In the living area Ziggy is usually lying close by. When i go down to the bedrooms and bathroom (and toilet!) My cat is all over me! Oh man, it is so annoying to be followed to the loo. Hoover follows and will sit and wait - staring at me intently. "Go away!" I tell him, "To find Elbie!" but he sits there very patiently. Drives me buggy Clastic: I had a new comment to make about my neighbours but I think that I will save it for the facebook page :p Nice to hear that you have grass! lilli_star: you could borrow one of your brother's work Kelpies for a trial run, right? Having two dogs is a hoot - although my family looked very unimpressed and incredulous when we told them that we were getting a second dog :D Actually, I still remember OH's reaction, kind of a: "Haha, very funny ... What?" You mean you're serious?????" dandybrush: so sorry to hear about your breeder's puppy, that is really horrific I have no fear of anyone wanting to steal our dogs - working dogs aren't high up on the list of stealable dogs around here and it's not like my two can work sheep so even a marauding Evil Farmer wouldn't want them, but baiting is definitely something that has worried me in the past because there have been some really horrific baiting incidents here in Canberra - there are some really twisted people out there. Even as a wee koala, I remember my horror at finding out that Trixie the street's local cattle dog had been poisoned - the owners were always letting her wander loose and go through people's garbage etc. I guess we're lucky because we have a LOT of dogs in this area and I mean a LOT. Our neighbours have incredibly noisy dogs that bark like mad when they leave and come home, there are other people here who let their dogs wander around off-lead in the street, there are barky dogs that react to any noise - by contrast our dogs are incredibly unobtrusive and non-pesky so I'd hope are at low risk of baiting. It truly is a sick and cruel way for people to 'solve' a problem, though aussielover: There's frequently a fairly lively debate/discussion about good/bad vets on RiotACT. Try here and here. We've always used Brudine Vet. We like them and they've always been very caring and responsive - fit our dog in immediately if there was an emergency (cut paw, possible eye infection). I don't think they'd go down well on DOL because they do recommend desexing dogs at six months and they do advocate the 12 month heartworm injection - which both of our not-dead-so-far dogs are on. aussielover
Thanks KumaAkita and KTB! They look like really nice vets. I will have to see if they are one of sydney uni's vet partners that accepts student interns though. Canberra seems like it has lots of off leash areas and is pretty dog friendly. I'm actually thinking of trying to get a job there when i graduate. Mindy is a really funny looking lab, she looks more like a field-bred lab imo. Which I like, Im not too keen on the current show labs in australia, they are too heavyset for my liking... Doctor mindy! Canberra is a great place to live :D Mindy is looking good... I told Kuma last night that we will have to have a photo shoot soon. I wanna get him in one of Mr KumaAkita's HiVis vests and a hard hat. wuffles
Awww, poor Mindy and her 'hard days' I would love to be able to bring Ava to work. She really does not like it when we leave for work of a morning. Satch is happy to go out and munch on his Kong, have a play, have a snooze... and never exhibits any kind of stress about us leaving. Even if I take Ava for a walk without him, he whinges when we go out the door but then settles down on his bed straight away. When we get home, sometimes he doesn't even get up to greet us! Ava, on the other hand... gives such a disappointed look when she realises we are leaving for the day. If I take Satch somewhere without her she spends most of the time looking out the front window waiting for us to get back. And when we get home, even if we've only been gone for 10 minutes, she wriggles and squirms and moans and squeaks like it's the happiest time of her life. She loves hooman company and likes to sleep as close to you as possible. Poor little mite, she would love to come to work, snoozing in her crate or under my desk!! aussielover
aussielover - are you allowed to take your dog to uni and work? im so jealous Yeah, I work at a vet clinic and I'm a vet student at uni. A few other vet students bring their dogs to uni, especially now we are out at camden, its a bit more relaxed there. It was really good for her guide dog training (not that we have to do that anymore!) Poor Ava, at least she has Satch though. That's why i am thinking of getting another dog, to keep Min company when i get a full time job. I know ppl on here think that its generally a bad idea just to get another dog to keep the current one company. But I really feel, for some dogs it is beneficial and a good thing :D
koalathebear
aussielover - are you allowed to take your dog to uni and work? im so jealous I think that was when Mindy was a guide dog in training and it was necessary to take her to lots of places to customise her to the job - and I'm guessing that one of the perks of being a vet nurse is that you're allowed to bring your doggy to work :D It would be nice to be able to bring my dog to work but there's the whole OH&S/people with allergies thing to think about I guess ... Hoover's going to be mournful tonight when Elbie goes for his agility test and Hoover is left behind. Similarly, Elbie is going to be unhappy when Hoover goes for his assessment tomorrow evening and Elbie is left behind ... aussielover: now that you mention it, Canberra does seem a pretty dog-friendly place. Sometimes I read DOL and the rest of the place seems so scary and dog-unfriendly whereas around here, there seem to be lots of places we can take our dogs - dog parks, school ovals - our dog club also lets members use its grounds when there aren't classes on, which is great. There are also a few cafes here that are dog-friendly - perhaps a little too dog-friendly sometimes ... I think as dog-lovers, we can sometimes forget that other people don't feel the same way. My poor allergic brother had a bad experience on the weekend ... he went to Tillys (a cafe in Lyneham) on Sunday and a group of 5-6 people showed up with their dogs. While some of the dogs were sitting quietly at their owners' feet, some of the dogs were wandering around quite a bit, my brother asked them to keep their dogs in check i.e. away from where he was eating because he is extremely allergic (e.g. he can stop breathing pretty fast), and one of the women looked at him very rudely, looked at his plate and said: "Well you're about to leave in any case" and wouldn't call her dog back ... I am extremely allergic to cats so would feel horrified if people tried to inflict their cats on me.
dandybrush
i would love to bring razz to work pity i work with foods... i guess i have to start thinking like a 2 dog owner :D im still deciding if i want to divide my attention those of you with 2 dogs, are you as close to each dog individually as the single dog owners are or are you less close to your doggies? if raz and i are gonna be not as close then she may go bak yet... im just confused its day 3, she is a good little sleeper through the night in her crate pees when i take her out, just wants to play with raz, i guess with training she will want to play with me to :p raz seems to be a bit bonded with her already, i took him to the park for me and him time yesterday, he was great, like his old self such a good boy then we got home and he ran straigt for the bedroom where willow as in her crate, to say hello to her ;)

OH and I take turns at training each dog. I'd say we love them equally - it's easy to when they're so different and have different pluses and minuses. They're both very smart, but I love Hoover's more chilled temperament (compared to Elbie's hyperactivity) and love Elbie's swiftness to pick up new things (compared to the fact that it takes a little longer for Hoover to pick things up - although he does do it in the end). I think that only you will know if you're ready for a second dog. The thing is, change is inevitable if you want to change the family composition. If you decide to have children, then by necessity your dog/dogs will get less attention at least in the early stages of the child's life. If you decide to have more than one child, then the first child will lose a bit of attention initially. There's plenty of love to go around, it's just the time that's tricky to manage ... dandybrush
thanks ktb, i know im annoying with all my concerns thank you for not making me feel stupid we do want 2 kids, and it took me along time to be ok with the thought of having a bub, (as i am so close to raz) i came to the decision that i can have kids and still make sure i give raz the time/attention he needs long as we do our best to keep me happy then i can have kids and still give raz everything i imagine that when i have one kid...ill prob have the same concerns regarding having a second :D i guess i just need to come to the decision that i can have 2 dogs and love both equally heaps!! and still have individual time with raz and maybe eventually willow too (wuffles - raz is my first born furbaby i love him soooo much it almost hurts, if that means he turns out to be my heart dog even with willow around im ok with that too :p ) Edited March 30, 2011 by dandybrush
koalathebear
thanks ktb, i know im annoying with all my concerns :D thank you for not making me feel stupid I think we all have concerns when we introduce new family members - probably different concerns, but still concerns. I worried a lot about Elbie having his nose put out of joint, about him feeling unhappy at having an interloper in the house. The two dogs keep each other company these days which is great. In the early days, if we were out a long time, i would start to fret about Elbie, but these days we're very relaxed because the dogs keep each other entertained and are very unstressed when we get home - although always extremely happy to see us. Actually, I remember when we first got Elbie and I hadn't slept for four nights and was at the end of my tether because of Elbie's night-time yowling (terrified the neighbours would complain, worried that Elbie would never stop night time yowling), I almost burst into tears and accused OH of loving the dog more than me :p Also, in our house, while I am very close to both dogs and love them dearly, it's very clear that OH is their favourite - he's able to play and cuddle them more than I can because of my allergies. I compensate by doing extra training with the dogs. I think it all works out in the end
dandybrush
thats funny, cause my only concern really is that raz and i will lose our relationship as it is, i know he will adjust to a pup and be fine with it. I hate change and i really really love what raz and i have, i worked with him for 2.5 yrs and we are so close and happy together. i would hate to see our closeness dissapear because of a pup :/ i think i am only raz's favourite because i take him to training and on playdates and walks etc. if OH did put more time in he may be raz's favourite but he does love a game of chase around the house with OH, i hope that doesnt change either
