I was lucky with Odin that I had lots of friends with dogs at the time and he used to play with them as a puppy so he was pretty well socialised. We did obedience at home but he only knew basic things like sit, drop, stay, 'go to your mat', fetch, that sort of thing, oh and housetraining of course. I have to say it really never occurred to me to take him to an organised class type situation. Now, I only know a couple of people with dogs, and none I'd really want around my dog, I definitely want to do obedience etc but I am in two minds about puppy preschool classes. Must be reading all the horror stories lol. KumaAkita, it must be something about spitz breeds lol. I used to let Odin jump up on me, if he did it gently and just put his paws on my shoulders, no knocking me down! ETA - Koalathebear, Elbie seems to have grown so quickly! Puppy phase really doesn't last long. And for photo time, this is my cat Tosca who loves my drop spindle lol, though she makes spinning a little difficult. He was also desexed too young (long story) which makes them grow taller and lankier than usual. Tosca and spindle are adorable and I love her name. I am very much living vicariously through you at the moment. I just got so excited when I noticed that ^ Photos, photos, photos! Elbie was a funny looking puppy, in a very good way. Such inquisitive eyes paired with all the puppy cuteness - they seem at odds with each other, but damn if the end result isn't adorable! Tosca's a cutie! I trust James off-lead about as far as I can throw him. He's great when there's no distractions. Take the other day at the dog park. He went nuts and ignored me for about the first 5-10 minutes while he went around exploring, but after that he was more than happy to come sprinting back when I called, even from the other end of the park. In the real world, non-dog park environment, however. A single bird, a lizard - let alone people and dogs! - and he'd be off in a flash. I've been doing lots of recall around the house today with chicken - works a treat! Am working on having someone else call him whilst I have his attention and he's slowly getting the message that if someone tells him to come, he must come. I figure me holding chicken is a fairly good distractor to start off with. As for jumping up, I am so, so guilty of inciting this I rile him up so badly when I get home and we both leap about and roll around like madmen for a few minutes I think he knows that he can only do it with me. And he's getting better at not jumping on visitors as well. It's hard though - sometimes he gets so excited he just sort of hurls himself at them. These days he might jump once at worst and then sits, quivering with excitement, at their feet. I hated people letting him get away with crap as a puppy People would reward him for jumping, let him chew their fingers and I even had several people encourage him to chew their shoelaces. Genabee Posted October 12, 2010 Share Posted October 12, 2010 (edited) I think it is harder to be a dog parent than a human parent sometimes! (She says, before she has a screaming toddler!!! ). Mainly, because even though we can parent children differently, there seems to be a somewhat more universal acknowledgement as to what is acceptable behaviour and what isn't. Also, it is compulsory for human children to attend school, where it isn't for dogs. Maybe there would be less dogs in the pound if puppy school (as in, a real decent one) or a short course at obedience was compulsory. How exciting I'm really hoping by the way that it is of the 4-legged variety, and you're not going to post a picture of a Dyson Roo had a big play with next door's GSD boy pup this afternoon for about an hour. They were really funny together- mostly they just wrestled about on the ground, but they did chase each other a little bit. She's still asleep (been inside for about an hour and a half or so). I hope it becomes a regular thing. I had lots more to say, but now I've forgotten... Hmmm... I just got so excited when I noticed that ^ Photos, photos, photos! Well some might argue that once you've seen one vacuum cleaner you've seen them all. Elbie isn't a big fan of the vacuum cleaner. He doesn't bark but he runs away from it and goes to his crate. Same as when I use the electric mixer. The funny thing is that he's totally fine with the washing machine and the dryer even when they rattle and make crazy noises. The other day his mat was in front of the washing machine and he even dropped in front of it - which was odd. We attribute it to the fact that in the early days of his living with us, his crate was in the kitchen facing the laundry and he was very used to the sound of the washer and dryer. I've been doing lots of recall around the house today with chicken - works a treat! She said something along the lines of training to be an obedience instructor helps to keep dogs out of rescues - preventative measures etc. It is very sad how many people buy a dog the same way they buy something very disposable. When we were at the pet store the other day, one of the shop assistants said that she was at the pound the other day. A woman came in with their very old family pet. The pound said: "Your dog is really old - you do know that we're going to have to put it to sleep because no one will want it." The woman said fine. The young child with her was VERY upset but the woman said: "Don't worry, we'll get another dog on the way home." This is what I came home to this afternoon. I love the shot of Satch and I also love their innocent expressions as they stand before those positively huge craters ... It's a combination of innocence and satisfaction as they survey their art ... But I won't try replying to everything, but just pick up on the most recent...... Happy birthday to Kuma! And gorgeous photos of Ruby playing! Nothing is more soothing and mesmerizing to my soul than watching puppies frolic. About the off-lead thing - to me this is the most important thing over anything. A tip that I learned from one of my more experienced dog-owner-friends was that if they're running off to something that looks more interesting - get their attention by calling name, whistling (a guy at the park actually has a dog whistle he uses for recall, Max has started answering to it - two birds, one stone... ), squeaking their favourite toy - then take off in the other direction as fast as your legs will carry you. Nine times out of ten, it seems, Max will follow me. But I have to get eye contact first. Whatever you do - don't chase them. My 2c ........Try it! It works! As for the jumping up. Max is a shocker. With everyone..... except my sister. My sister is also the only person who he's ever done a happy wee for. I really wonder sometimes. I'm sure its because we're so alike..... What he often does, which I'll just have to capture on camera at some point, is he'll body-wag up to someone, then he puts his right shoulder on the ground like he's going to roll over, but doesn't... with his bum up in the air and his tail wagging! KTB: I was reading in another thread thing that someone was saying you know you're a crazy dog person when you consider quitting your career to take up a dog-friendly job. I recently researched franchises, so had to smile at that. Are you considering the same? ETA: I'm still so stupid with the quoting.... We have stairs in the house, so those will be blocked off... and we're currently living out of a room at the moment and Mars likes to jump on the bed to say hi and shove toys in our faces so no more of that too. Don't think I'll be leaving him in the backyard by himself because he'll try to play soccer.. or maybe I'm just worrying too much! *rips hair out* Hope the puppy pre-school lady is there for Max! She's 6 months old in 2 weeks, and although all the breeders say you should let them have a season first, it's just not practicable when you work and live in town. And you don't have a secure dog run. And you don't want to leave them inside all day. So it shall be done at 6 months. I was watching Aussielover's thread, but her puppy Mindy is so good all the time, it's like comparing apples and oranges. That would be something KTB would do!!! Next everyone will be taking pics of their vaccis!!!!! Don't worry too much about having Rubster desexed. Genevieve was fine the next day - and didn't have a cone! She didn't seem to want to eat/scratch/lick/play with her stiches either... Hubby declared she looked like she was 'a dog on smack' when he picked her up from the vet (and proceeded to phone me and I was at work feeling so guilty), but she was up with the tail wagging when I walked in the door that night!! I don't know what he was on about!! Such a Mummy's girl!! She was four months though, so I am not sure if they bounce back sooner when they are younger? Except when it gets smeared on his nose because someone can't aim for his mouth I'm trying to imagine recalls with a live chicken I don't think I'd be able to shoo him away long enough to actually call him back! That pound story is disgusting, KTB. And what that mother's teaching the poor child I don't understand how you can actually have a dog that long and not be attached to it. Ruby and her mum look like the best of friends - do they get to play together often? Max's bum wiggle/crawl sounds hilarious! I love the last photo you've posted. Very sweet. Hope everything goes smoothly for the two boys going in for the chop this week! I keep tossing up when James'll be done. Originally it was going to be 6 months, based on what I'd read on forums. Then we chatted with his breeder who prefers giving her labs time to grow so they're their big, boofy selves rather than leggy, and she said at 9 months at the earliest. Then it was going to be before he was boarded in January. And now, doing some deeper reading, I'd rather not have him done til 18 months but I think it'll probably be closer to 14-15 months - right before his council rego is due.
