I have heard that there has been outbreak of parvo both in Sydney and Melbourne. Cannot see topic on this subject here?????

Has anybody else heard about cases of parvo? I know of one confirmed case of parvo in vaccinated pups.

I think its safe to say there's always parvo in Sydney and Melbourne. Recent threads here have mentioned cases in both cities.

There is a risk that pups that are exposed to it that are vaccinated may contract the virus, it depends on how old the pup is and if the mothers immunity in the pup fought off the vaccination. There have been cases of this mentioned. You hear of adult dogs catching it, and dogs with a very low immune system due to contracting something like mange.

A Titre (spelling) test can be done at your vet to ensure your pup has the right amount of immunity to cover it for the virus, remember that a live vac will lower the pups immune system that is why the vet will tell you that you shouldn't take your pup out into the public until 10 days after the second vaccination.

As the weather is getting colder in Sydney and Melbourne, there should be less outbreaks and the virus thrives in the heat and usually lays dormant in the colder weather.

i wrote to my vets earlier this month and i got the following reply:

I can confirm there has been a parvo outbreak in all of nsw over the past few months and it is concerning for everyone. The most important thing is that your dogs are up to date with their vaccinations (Parvo virus is included in the C3 part of the vaccination whether they get C3 alone or as a C5). Having your dogs vaccines up to date is the best and really only thing you can do to protect them and if you are walking them not letting them socialise with stray animals. Avoiding parks and walking them may be too extreme but is an option, however parvo virus can exist in the environment for over 1 year so there is never really any parvo free time.

Parvo is endemic.

An outbreak would signify that there were times when the virus isn't present... there never is.

The virus mutates every few years or so too so vaccines don't always work (which is why vaccinated adult dogs can become infected.. not overly common, but is seen on occasion).

I saw a notice about an outbreak here in Mackay, Qld too.
