toofarnorth
OK...just looking for other peoples experiences and advice, as this is the first time I have owned a male dog before. My boys doodle gets stuck in the erect position, after a good humping session against his matt. The first time it happened, I had no idea what was wrong...I suspected that maybe something had twisted. So I phoned the emergency vet, (was a Sunday morning) and he told me to put some KY or vaseline on it. I used KY, and this has worked the 4 or 5 times its happened. Last night, it was stuck again (dried out maybe) so I applied KY, but it took at least 25 minutes to retract, poor boy was all hunched over and very unhappy. I am worried this might happen when i am not around...if i dont apply the KY he starts yelping. He was desexed 10 days ago and I thought that this might stop this from happening, but obviously not. Any ideas...is this something thats pretty normal with a male dog? He is only 6 months old, will he figure out how to retract it himself do you think? (and yes, for some reason I do feel like a dunce and embaressed asking these questions!!)
Dogsfevr
No it isnt normal ,does he hump the same thing,at a set time?? Have you removed his humping item & seen what he does?? When he is humping what do you do to distract him?

When he is humping what do you do to distract him? He humps the same item, his dog bed, but at different times. I havent tried to remove the item, but I have tried to distract him. He is usually distracted briefly, but goes back to humping the bed. I can persevere with distraction, toys and stuff, if this would help. Teebs, did he grow out of it? Did you have to get out the gloves and KY???
Teebs
I had to take him to the vets a few times, this was only last year, he is 6 years old and was desexed when he was 3, so no idea what made him start to do it? I had the KY and god only knows what else - i was told that cold water can help as everything will shrink once he got cold, but never actually tried it
Erny
If you see him humping his bed, remove the bed. Put the bed back later. Humps. Remove it for longer (eg. until bed time). See if that is enough to stop his behaviour (ie that it doesn't manifest to some other item). Try not to pay too much attention to him.
sas
We've used a glass of warm water with sugar mixed in it, simply pop cup over the penis for a little rinse...the sugar encourages the licking too. Someone on here told me that, we've used it a couple of times.

fifi
Sugar is great for tissue reduction, most country vets use it for prolapses. There's obviously a behaviour/habit issue involved, but it may also take up to eight weeks for his hormones to settle down. Good advice here on removing the bed and distraction, although I'd probably send him outside to run rather than toys or food. fifi

OSoSwift
Sometimes the opening of the sheath can be a little small, so if they get an erection the tightness of the sheath opening stops the blood leaving the erect penis and it remains stuck out. Sometimes you do need a small surgery to make the penile sheath opening larger so it cannot happen. It can take a couple of months for the testosterone to reduce so he will not magically stop humping straight after a castration. Prevention is much better than cure in his case. If it keeps happening surgery maybe the better option for all concerned.
Erny
Sugar is great for tissue reduction, most country vets use it for prolapses. That's interesting. How would it be used (penal size reduction aside ..... I get that. LOL). And how come it works? Does it cause a reduction in blood vessels or something? A strong sugar solution is hyperosmolar, it will draw water out of swollen tissues. It's quite useful for applying to a prolapsed uterus that has been dangling on the ground for several hours and is several times larger than the hole it has to be pushed back into
Erny
Thanks for the response, Rappie. So, can this also be used as a type of pultice to, say, reduce the swelling of some sort of wound/injury? Pardon me if that's a dumb question . Oh - and I know a person who chucks a haemorrhoid here and there (perhaps a generational thing ..... shows up my age, no?) ..... would this sugar thing be something that would help him? Mind you - not sure how it would be applied and I sure as eggs ain't going to offer to help

toofarnorth
Thanks for the advice everyone...I will definately try the glass of water and sugar next time, and I have started to remove his mat as soon as he starts. So far so good.

Same as you'd use for salty water - or depending on what it is, no water needed.
Little Gifts
This just reminded me that my old boy (who was desexed) had this happen a few times. I had no idea what the hell was happening and first time used a cloth soaked in very cold water and held it over the whole swollen mess in the hope it would go down of its own accord. I even resorted to using packets of frozen vegetables wrapped in tea towels! I never had advice from the vet about ky or sugar water but those methods just sound even grosser! I just remember he would be all hunched up and unable to stop humping. Frozen loins seemed to fix the problem.....
