More Toileting Questions- Timing

Just want to know how often i should take my pup to the toilet. When we are home i thought every 30min - hour or whenever we notice him sniffing and circling. Is that alright?

When we arent at home he will be in a puppy pen with bed, toilet and water. So we cant really help there but he should have a fairly good grasp on newpaper training so that should help.

At night he will be crated in our bedroom - how often should i take him to the toilet during the nigh?

Also, if i am taking him out say each hour during the day - how do i know if i should wait around for him to poop after he has pee'd? Should i just praise him after he has pee'd and then continue to stand around for a while and see what happens?

How often should a pup poo? He will be an 8 week old pug.

Sorry for all the random questions.

Thanks in advance

I'm toilet training a 9 weeks old now... it has been amusing.

I take her out after play, after food and when she wakes up... in the day time, we just chill outside till she does her business. If we go inside and she hasn't gone, we go inside for 5 minutes, and we are back outside again and she will go. We are mostly outside in the daytime if she's not sleeping.

At night, we get up twice.. she sleeps in bed with me and when she wakes up, we go outside. It's working well for us, she goes quickly and we are back in bed again sleeping. She is very quick at night.. just put her down, she sniff, does her business and basically launches in my arms for her cuddles and we go inside and in bed. This happens under 5 minutes

I don't wait around for her to do number 2... she always lets me know when she wants to go. She sniffs a lot more, we go outside and then goes

Thanks for the reply.

I feel really inexperienced when it comes to toilet training. We have always had adult dogs which we have adopted and they have all been toilet trained. So this is all new to me.

Thanks for putting up with all the random questions.

Have a read at dogstardaily.com. There are lots of information on raising a puppy which helps me quite a lot. Like what Charles say, after play, after food and when they wake up.

I think every puppy is different though. My 13 weeks old puppy holds on for 3 hours before he wants to go. I bring him outside every 2 hours but he looks at me like I am an idiot and he just wants to play.

How long can a 13 weeks pup hold though?

How long a puppy can hold on for depends on the dog- their breed, size, upbringing, their diet and what toilet training you have done so far. My Jack Russell puppy could hold on for 7 hours over night and 3-4 hours during the day at 12 weeks of age.

I would suggest keeping a diary of when the puppy toilets, when they have accidents etc- it aids in you working out their physical ability to hold on very quickly.

Hi nicolatu, i have read the dogstardaily.com books, i have both the 'before you get a puppy' and the 'after you get a puppy' documents on my computer at work and every time i get some free time i read them, over and over. Mainly to re-read sessions so that they are drilled into my memory.

Cosmolo - a toilet diary hey? thats a great idea, just have to remember to use it.....

When you bring a new puppy home, regardless of age, I would recomend taking out every 30 minutes or so, until they have a wee. Then you can relax and just take them after meal, when they wake up, if they circle or every couple of hours; whatever comes sooner. Best thing is to install a dog flap, and they will soon learn to use it. I have in this moment two 12 weeks old pups, who have run of the house, and last accident was some 5 weeks ago.

Puppy usually only poo after meal.

Thanks for your answer. I do remember when my puppy goes toilet. That is why I could work out that he needs to go wee every 3 hours.

My puppy is a Border Collie and I have been training him to go toilet outside and on newspaper. My puppy can hold on at night for a long time but because he contracted urinary tract infection when he came, I don't want to risk him contracting it again. He is toilet-trained pretty well except when he decides to get naughty one night, and pee on my bed. That is the only accident in 1 week.
