Whelping My Labrador

I wouldn't be suggesting leave her in a room and let it happen!

Nobody is suggesting that she isn't supervised but perhaps that her owner stops hovering anxiously and taking her off to the vet for internals every day. It's enough to prevent labour from happening. A bitch can be left to her own devices and still supervised from non-intrusive distance.

....when I showed her the first baby she looked at me like "what the hell is that!!! I didn't do it!"

Hahaha! I can just see that... and have seen the exact same look myself...

I wouldn't leave Pearl alone, but I'd definitely not be hovering over her either - just go about your normal habits and just keep an eye out for anything she does that is out of the ordinary. You will know when she's about to do the actual deed - don't worry about that!

Trouble didn't like the whelping box we'd made for her - she decided that the floor in the computer room was where she was having them - so we had to accommodate... we drank half a bottle of Baileys and let her do her thing, only opening the bags for her as the pups arrived.

Zeddy decided that next to my bed was where she'd do her thing - she didn't like the whelping box either.

Blossom, my Rottie girl, was happy to deliver in her whelping box - thank dog!

Hi all. Thanks for all the advice,it is helpful and I do really appreciate it. It probably sounds as though I am hovering over Pearl but Im not as I work fultime and have no choice but to go on with normal routine and life. Ihave been calm around Pearl. I guess I am just being cautious as it was an unexpected litter and her first. Also the vet said she is fully dilated and thinks she should have them now! I have only actually been to the vet 3 times in 2 weeks however would not hesitate to do it again, if I thought I needed to. Pearl is a very, very lay back labrador ( perhaps thats the problem...) and nothing phases her. I have had pups before from my other labrador however she was very differnt , it was a huge ltter and a first one and I had to assist with the birth breaking bags, calming. keeping her in the whelping box and so on etc etc. All her pups wre big and healthy and we lost none. There were 11. However her stages of labour were obvious and I knew her exact dates. I am a cautious person and like to ere on the side of safety for my animals sake. I m definatley not leaving her totally alone and when Im not there someone is keeping an eye on her.

I will keep you posted, personally I hope she has them this weekend while I am here 24/7 or else my husband will have to stay home for a couple of days next week.

I will keep you all posted, so far nothing. But all looks normal at this stage.

Hi Thanks for your assistance, I probably sounded more anxious than I am ...... I have definately not been taking Pearl for internals everyday ( who would and where did I say that?)!!! I have not been intrusive, just cautious and only been ot the vet 3 times in 2 weeks at the vets request. I just put Pearls situation out there to get advice from peopoel who have witneeses many births and thought it would only help. I realise they are all differnt and am not about to intervene when not nessecary. I have had whelpinbg experience before so am not a novice bu t this one seems differnt and I thought I woul dget some support.

For dog's sake Pearl... hurry up and pop those babies out! It can't be comfortable having them all inside now...

Tummy rubs from me too... nice two handed round motion ones... hopefully to stimulate them puppies into wanting to be born... *grin*

Oh Pearl... have you done anything spectacular overnight? *grin*

No... however she is off her food this morning which is very very unusual for Pearl as she is an absolute guts normally. Some very slight discharge a creamy colour - NOT yellow and not smelly. Im hoping the food thing is a sign for tday. It better be or we are off to the vet yet again!!! Any advice? I can feel the pups move. She is very tight and low and bumpy in the lower tummy.

:) sounding better ,could be today !!heres hoping & sending easy whelping vibes

Hi

Still nothing. She just ate some tuna and had some milk. It is all she would eat and she has gone off her good puppy bikkies. However not looking like producing any puppies as yet. Should I be worried as she was dilated on Thursday! The discharge is still clearish and the pups are moving but she canhardly walk she is so uncomfortable.

You should have puppies or signs of labour by morning at this stage and I'd be off for a check tomorrow if you don't :)

I agree and that is the plan. The vet will be sick of the sight of us!!! Lets hope we have some little babies by morning and all will be relieved.

Turn the lights off and make the house as quiet as you can. If you have kids send them off to their room and turn the TV etc down.

Ok will try it. Pearl is just lying on the tiles in the family room at the moment, every now and then she looks very uncomfortable as if a contraction perhaps ( nothing dramatic)??? Then she is quiet again or walks around the room and sniffs the cat! I will try the quiet dark house thing and see if that entices some action!
