Raw/barf Diet

Does ground chicken carcuses constitute a raw meaty bone? I have been using it as a mince that I've been adding vegie slop to ( and feeding things like lamb shanks and beef bones etc too) but it just occurred to me that my chicken mince/ minced carcuses is basically a RMB that has been mushed. Should I be getting actual minced meat for the protein source that I mix my vegie slop with and make patties?? Then I could feed the minced chicken carcus as the RMB? I hope that makes sense.

I'm basically making patties with mince and vegie slop and feeding RMBs with it. Does this sound correct?? Man this is confusing and overwhelming but I'm determined to work it out :o

Yes it is ... but you should give them bones to chew on as this is what cleans their teeth.

I give a mince and vege mix (with ground chicken bones) but also add about the same again in bones such as chicken necks or chicken frames.

No, the RMB are for them to chew and digest, the chewing and ripping and working to get the meat off is what cleans the teeth and stimulates the digestion.

Totally edible bones such as wings, necks, frames, lamb breast, lamb necks, roo tail etc

Yes they get roughage and to some extent calcium from the ground frames, but they need the big chewable bones too.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I still give him big meaty bones to eat too. I was basically just worried that if I'm using ground chicken carcuses as a mince that I mix vegies with and freeze into patties AND give him big meaty bones then I am essentially giving him masses of RMB with vegies and not a lot of meat. Should I use actual meaty mince to make the patties with or is using ground chicken carcus ok??

Have you thought about having some offal in the mix

I use

35% human grade Beef Mince

35% minced chicken frames

20% minced or chopped offal (lamb liver / brains / kidney)

10% Soaked Vets All Natural

I mix this up and freeze in individual portions - thenn add grated carrot/ zuchinni/ apple

I also add supplements to this diet:

An omega 3 oil mix

A tsp of Pet Pep Up

A desert spoon of a green mix essentials

+ a salmon oil capsule daily

a fresh sardine daily

Mine get RMB daily for breakfast - I avoid sharp splintery bones like lamb shanks and large weight bearing beef bones.

Best Bones are

lamb - neck/breast/chine

beef - chuck (spine bone) twice a week as a toothbrush bone

All you need is a to do a little bit of fine tuning to get the diet balanced

At least you are happy to put the time in to get it right :) Well Done

Chicken mince is fine. He should be getting some beef and lamb too, and a % of offal in the mix

I feed chicken mince which is frames, wings put through a mincer, very roughly, so they actually have to chew the bones. To this is added offal, and I add the rest, ie, vegs blah blah. The dogs also have bones.

What you are doing is ok, just give him bones too, and the other things as already suggested.

Technically yes, the ground carcuses do count as RMB's.

As to whether you need to add meat or not I think it depends on the dog. Some dogs need more meat in their diet while others can handle (and do better with) a lot of bone. There's nothing wrong with the chicken mince but if you can give bones instead then that's better IMO.

My dog gets about 40% RMB's, the rest is roo mince (30%), veg/fruit mix, yogurt, fish, offal, eggs, goats milk and supplements. In the past I have tried feeding a higher ratio of bone (70-80%) but it just doesn't work well for him.
