Gilypoo
Hi Guys, I know that BYB is wrong and dont approve AT ALL.. ... however a girl I play soccer with is adament that she is going to breed her Lhapso x Shitsu.. I am trying every thing in my power to stop her but she wont listen so I thought of the idea to overload her with possible things that could go wrong and the costs that may be involved... I even showed her the euthansia video and she didnt care... So what I would like from fellow Dolers is any info that I can give her.. I did abit of research on the Lhapso and I found that they sometime can have bad hips, kidney problems and eye desease... Any thing else??? I also read that Lhapso's can be quite dominent so i also suggested temp testing... She is so Naive, she didnt know the difference between a vet check and health testing She did say that she would do SOME health tests I suggested that she gets contract or desexes the pups before they go to a new home, but doubt that she will do it... She says shes not in it for the money (yeah right) let it be known that I do NOT support her.. so please dont flame me... Has anyone else had any luck convincing a stubborn person to change there ways?... Any scare tactics or other possible ways would be greatly appreciated Gily
Bluefairy
Is your friend prepared for: Expensive vet bills if the pregnant mother gets ill? Expensive vet bills if the pregnancy doesn't go according to plan - C/s, blood transfusions, vet stays, IVs, etc etc? Is she prepared to hand rear one or all the pups, feeding every 2-3 hours day and night? Is she prepared for the heartache if her female dies during labor? Is she prepared to keep any puppies she can't sell or get rid of? Is she prepared for the 8 weeks of sleepless nights? The mess and constant cleaning? The feeding and expenses? Having a female have puppies isn't all its cracked up to be....its a lot of hard work, expense and blood, sweat and lots of tears. Shame there's not a pill to cure people of these insane ideas BF

Loving my Oldies
It is impossible to get through to some people, because they "are going to be different" and whatever else they can think of to justify. And some just don't care about statistics and the suffering of other dogs. Can only suggest you tell her you are taking her to lunch and divert to a pound on a "PTS" day. mr.mister
I cannot believe she saw the euthanasia video and still didn't care... if that doesn't affect people like this then what hope is there at all!?? As well as what others have suggested perhaps ask how she would feel months/years down the track when people come back to her demanding refunds/paying for $$$$'s in vet bills because the offspring have developed bad hips/hearts/genetic problems. Maybe direct her to a show or something where she can have her sense talked into her - and if she's still desperate to go down this breeding track, perhaps someone there can lead her in the right direction the proper way with showing/tested parents/breeding for improvement/etc. Doubt it though.... Best of luck, I'm thinking of you.
Jed
My experience is that nothing you say will make any difference. People simply think dogs have pups, all goes well. They have rosy pictures of nice mums and nice pups. That often happens, but quite often it doesn't and these people have no knowledge or experience of that. And mostly, no one hears about the disasters. The euth video wont work, because she doesn't think it will happen to any of her pups. Nothing much anyone says makes any difference because those things happen to other people. Here's a thread which may give you ammunition. Good luck!! http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...mp;hl=eclampsia Edited April 26, 2010 by Jed
Dogsfevr
You now what i am starting to think if these people want to breed & arent prepared to listen then why educate them on the right way to do it if they chose to do so. Maybe its time to let them learn themsleves. I dare say your friend isnt stupid & is quite capable of researching herself but often i think all the info friends give them simply makes it easier for them & a way to make themselves look good to sellers. You have said your bit i would now switch off & let her do everything herself, she knows you will be a source of info if she gets stuck which makes it easy for her. It is hard because it is the dog & pups that suffer but we need to stop making it easy for these people & let them do the hard yards themselves
Simply Grand
I'm also inclined to think that in a lot of cases people won't listen whatever you say, and even the more you try to convince them not to, the more determined they'll become. I'm also not sure that information about pound dogs and pups being euthanased will get the message through - I expect she would just believe that that would never happen to her pups. Could you get her to come on DOL and read the Breeder's Community threads? That might help if she is any sort of caring person. I had no idea what's involved in breeding (not that I was ever planning to) and reading the stories about the struggles and the poor babies and mums that don't survive is so heartbreaking. Only problem might be that seeing all the gorgeous baby puppies might make her want to do it even more...

mumof3
People rarely appreciate it when some well meaning person comes up and tells them they are wrong and about to contribute cruelty to animals. In her head it is a wonderful idea to breed her bitch, and normally only experience will turn most people's opinions around. She would probably write you off as some sort of self important opinionated tool. If you want to remain friendly, I'd drop it if I were you. There are other, more sneaky things you can do, like report her to the local council for having an entire bitch or something like that. Unfortunately we can't always turn everyone else around to our way of thinking.
mita
I like the ideas posted so far about telling her how breeding dogs will hit her hip pocket & bring complications into her life that she'd rather do without. Nothing about the welfare of dogs is getting thro' to her....& never will. But issues about costing her money & giving her grief will. So bring on all the costs associated with breeding dogs & all the problems that will come out of the woodwork to fall on her lap.

oakway
One can always pray that the bitch needs an emergency C section on a public holiday out of hours. Bet she would never try for a second litter.
percyk
my sil wanted to breed their staffy girl to some other dog in the neighbourhood i just said loudly in front of their son that their could be complications during the birth and they could lose their beloved pet...was it worth the risk the 17 year old son.. my nephew quickly said' 'we are not breeding her mum' and that was it
Miss B
One can always pray that the bitch needs an emergency C section on a public holiday out of hours. Bet she would never try for a second litter. You'd be surprised - some people just never learn. I know of a BYB who had a complete disaster with her first litter of SWF cross-breeds. Bitch got very sick and they lost all the puppies. Vet recommended desexing the bitch asap. Lo and behold the bitch was pregnant again on her very next season...
Black Bronson
There needs to be a law controlling the breeding of dogs which I mentioned on another thread and IMHO it's the only way to stop this stupidity. Showing a council by-law that unregistered breeding carries a $5000 fine or something to that effect would stop many potential breedings.
