First Ever Reserve Challenge

The thing I value more than anything else (well, maybe except points) is positive feedback on my dog and my handling (when I get it right)

No ribbon, no certificate compares with those. :)

Is that Postive Feedback from the Judge??? That would be great but seems to be a rare thing, Iguess they are too busy to say much at the time, and perhaps it's not the done thing? Although I've been bouyed by encouraging comments from Judges such as "promising puppy", "what a lovely line up of beautiful bitches I have here today" and "nice job". But I think comments are rare, apart from a few 'niceities'.

I do get alot of postive feedback (and constructive critism) from my fellow competitors which I value greatly.

And it's not about the 10c ribbon or a piece of carboard, when I started this post I was very thrilled and happy to have been chosen for a RC, it was my first, and as the days have gone by my initial euphoria has wained somewhat.

Some of your comments have made me feel that perhaps it really is no big deal. But it did give me some encouragement for a short while there to keep trying when at times I've felt like giving up, not because I don't think my dog is up to it, I know she is, her biggest handicap is me, but I've been trying hard and learning alot and felt that it was finally starting to come together.

From the judge (rare I agree but results count), from other judges or breeders I respect and from my fellow Houndees. Nice to hear when you've shown your dog to advantage.

Given the choice, I'd pick a 25 point challenge certificate over positive feedback. I know my dogs' good points and bad points already. I know my own foibles and strong points as well.

The point I am trying to make is that what is rewarding to me may not be rewarding to someone else, and vice versa. If ribbons and certificates are all it takes to keep people coming back and entering shows I'll buy them and write them even if I don't give a fat rodents rear myself.

Edited for grammar

Well if we're choosing.......who wouldn't choose the 25 point Challenge, that's the stuff my dreams are made of!!

I'm sorry that you feel your win has been somewhat negated. I vividly remember the excitement of MY first Reserve challenge so believe me, you're not alone!!

Hang in there and your first CC will surely not be too far away!!! :)

I too was thrilled when I got my first RCC but my point was that I didn't need a RCC Certificate to validate that excitement. It doesn't come with any points so is just a bit of card. When you start getting the CC, BOB and Groups etc I suspect you will realise how a lot of us feel about getting a RCC certificate.

+1

As for NSW not offering Res CC certificates.......when my Stafford was Res CC at the SBT Society Easter Show 1999 (following up on his SBIS the prior Easter), he came home with the Res rosette and a Res CC certificate. :)

Specialty shows are an entity on their own, there are a whole lot of things offered at specialties that are not offered at your everyday champ shows.

If you want a really worthwhile momento, take a camera and get a pic of you stacking your dog at every show. It's something I wish I'd done, I just have a few pics of badly stacked dogs and bitches, to remind me how hopeless I was. LOL

I agree - I haven't been showing that long and ribbons and stuff really don't do it for me.....that's just a personal thing.

I can understand how it would encourage some people though. For me, I always got a lot more encouragement and pleasure from judges, stewards or my mentors telling me that I did a good job showing my dog/bitch and that they looked good out there in the ring and that's been enough to keep me hooked.

To be honest, my most rewarding show moment was probably when I handled one of my friends staffies in a challenge line-up recently (was the first time I've ever handled someone else's dog)....I think we came 3 out of 4 (LOL) but a person in the show world who I really respect said afterward "you actually did a good job of handling that staffie" - I was stoked - a certificate or ribbon wouldn't have done the same for me.

:( Everyone's different I guess.

I have been only showing for a couple of years, but the ribbons do mean a bit to me. Up in the NT we don't get ribbons for BOB or CC we only get certificates for those. So we don't get ribbons for RCC or RUBOB either. The only ribbons we get are for the BIG or RUBIG and so forth. Some clubs don't even have ribbons for your Class in Group, all you get is a certificate  I understand it must cost a bit, but I am with some others who to them getting a ribbon or certificate do mean alot, and like them have never even had a major award given to them. It always seems to be the same people winning. But I suppose if the same people win over and over then obviously they have a good dog/bitch and deserve it. One day I am sure there will be a judge out who likes my dog over theirs  And yes I will probably do cartwheels around the ring

That may be the case, but as the certificates are printed and supplied by DogsNSW, then I would be very surprised if they were not available to clubs to purchase as well. In many places it would seem it is a "domestic" decision whether or not to offer them.

Wow, I've been showing for just over 5 years and still keep every class ribbon I receive  if it is a large class, or a particularly special show to me or the beginning of a baby puppy's career etc I make a point of ensuring I go home with that fabric memento. I don't go chasing after them n most cases if we're the only one in the class etc, but if they are handed to me, I cherish them.

Of course the fringies are what we strive for, along with the 'point' cards but SOME of us DO like that tangible memory. I have some Reserve Challenges for Caber- including the first one he received as well as some he was awarded by international or specialist judges etc. So what they don't carry any points- they look pretty in the folder and they mark the date & show etc. However a few times I have requested one, and received one but had to fill it in myself which was a little disappointing. It's almost like the secs are mocking you for being excited over "only a reserve challenge".

When Ziva won Reserve CC at the Melbourne Royal from the Junior class, I had to specially request a certificate (for such a big show, you'd think they'd have one???) and it took lots of running around to finally have one printed up and sent out. It does, however, sit in pride of place in the living room and I smile whenever I remember the judge pulling her out of the line... no, I don't *need* it to rememebr the event but you know what?? It's nice!! We put in a lot of time & effort, not to mention money, into showing our dogs... I think we are entitled to a little memento of these big events!

Also, Congrats LizT on your Reserve!!! What a fantastic result in your breed

Thanks Spikespuppy,

Yes, as I said it was her first and I 'chase' them because I have a little girl who loves to come home and show her older brother and sister and dad what her little dog did that day (let's face it, I know my dogs 'own' my youngest daughter, they barely let her out of their sight LOL)

Meanwhile I've written the date and details on my entry number for that day and pinned it to my cork board. :)

Well done and congratulations to you on your successes and your 'non complacent' attitude.

Having read all the comments I am pleased to announce the Rylstone Kandos & District Dog Club will at their shows on 24th & 25th July 2010 be adding to their supplies Reserve Challenge Certificates.

They will not automatically be written out but will be available for any rcc winners who want one. We will make announcements over the day to remind people.

Ch & Rch ribbons will be handed out in the ring together with BOB & Rubob - there are also some special BOB sashes - 20+ for various breeds both days.

As this will be our first shows where Neuters qualify for cc's we have some special BOB trophies for the first 12 breeds to enter Neuter classes.

Place ribbons will be available at the Secretaries office.

Hope those of you within reasonable travell will come join us - Ozentries have our shedule up and entries are open and our advert has appeared in the May 2010 DogsNSW journal.

Good for you Nancy!!

The way they handle the card/certificate requests here in Tassie is to stickytape a piece of paper on a table at the Secretary's office for exhibitors wanting cards to write down the exhibit number. That way they are just checked periodically for new additions, crossed off as written and left in a convenient place to be collected so that the entire flow of the office isn't disrupted for card requests.

They even did this for In Group cards this past weekend due to so many people not collecting those which were previously written automatically.
