Diet For Pregnant Bitches

 Share

Recommended Posts

Every now and then these topics go round and round and often we find that no one has changed their diets or eveyone has or someone has. So seeing the thread about Raspberry Leaf Tablets surfaced again in the Breeders forums I though I would open this up for discussion again.

What breed are you feeding?

What do you feed normally?

What if any changes do you make to diet after mating?

What changes do you make to diet confirmation of pregnancy?

What breed are you feeding? Mini Schnauzers

What do you feed normally? Arden Grange lamb and rice, some veg, chicken wings and natural treats sometimes.

What if any changes do you make to diet after mating? none after mating, will move to puppy food in last week of pregnancy, so she is fully on that food when pups are born.

What changes do you make to diet confirmation of pregnancy? um, not sure what the question means? what is diet confirmation?

What breed are you feeding?

Staffords

What do you feed normally?

Raw - prey model, with some scraps and leftovers not technically ''raw''

What if any changes do you make to diet after mating?

None

What changes do you make to diet confirmation of pregnancy?

None. At about 7 weeks depending on the bitch their food gets split in to 3 meals instead of 2 and more meaty bones given (chicken thigh instead of carcase for example)

Thanks guys for the replies - I think conversation is good not only between breeders but I also know that several of the Lab people frequent these pages and so they get an idea of how we think and what we feed. Its all education in my opinion.

Becks - sorry that question should read

What changes to diet do you make once you have confirmation of pregnancy?

I asked this because I know a couple of breeders that automatically assume pregnancy once the mating has taken place adn adjust diet immediately.

Breed:

Labrador Retrievers

What I normally feed:

Raw mince/bones/chicken frames etc with a bit of Uncle Albers dry

Changes I make after mating:

I usually start giving the bitch the same raw, but change to a puppy formula dry.

Changes on confirmation of pregnancy:

Keep on the same diet with the puppy formula, increased amount but divided up into smaller meals as the pregnancy advances.

I have just done this with a bitch I mated, found out she wasn't pregnant, so she is now back on her normal diet. No harm done, giving her the puppy formula dry except she had put on a little weight, which is easily remedied back on her normal diet.

What breed are you feeding?

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

What do you feed normally?

RAW (including meaty bones, chicken/beef mince etc) and special home-made mix of oats with several things added

What if any changes do you make to diet after mating?

The only addition here is folate...

What changes do you make to diet confirmation of pregnancy?

None, other than increase the amount when necessary...

I had my last litter of ACD's, about 6 years ago, and at that time, as soon as the mating had taken place, I put my bitches on Puppy food. They had that all through the pregnancy and until the pups were weaned.

I am now about to have another litter, this time a Basenji litter, and I was thinking about this the other day... I am a creature of habit, and I feel I 'should' do it this way, BUT Im just wondering what the general thoughts are of breeders ??? Puppy food, or keep the bitch on her nomal adult food ???

There is absolutely NO need to put bitches on puppy food any more.

Dry dog foods are so much more sophisticated now and much better balanced so a good quality dry is all that is required.

BTW....you've seen Woger and Flame.....and you know what I feed their mother. Nothing changed during her pregnancy!

Mmmmmm just trying to get my oldfashioned head around the idea of NOT giving puppy food to her at all :o

So widdle Wog and fabulous Fwame had Mummy Koda on Adult food all through her pregnancy ???

I did forget to add that I do give them all the 'added extras' every night, sadines, chicken frames, (Ive just started to give them that, and the pure joy on their faces when they see the frames coming to them  ), wings, RMB leftovers, etc, etc :D

Nothing but Adult food right through together with all of the above! :D

The gang of 9 were reared on Optimum. I'm just now starting to mix a handful of the other stuff in with their Optimum and they're loving it! :o
