Link below... Fido's Fre-Itch Rinse Concentrate ETA: makes the dog smell gorgeous, once you've dipped them allow to sun dry and it's active for a week for fleas and 3 days for ticks. Karelea Aussies Posted April 16, 2010 Share Posted April 16, 2010 It must be horrifying if you are not used to them...a bit like head lice in kids :D Fleas are a way of life on the coast and can normally be controlled with treatments, but I can not get rid of them completely at the moment, and most people at training are complaing of having a problem too. I use Advantix and Capstar, and although I can not see any fleas, the dirts are a tell tale sign. I gave up on Frontline years ago as it seemed to stop working . Raid do a Flea spray which is excellent if you dont like to bomb. We had a particularly bad summer 4 or 5 years ago, and this was the only thing that helped get rid of them completely. No need to wash everything you just spray it all. I think you can even spray the dog/cat but I could never bring myself to do it ;) . Amika Posted April 16, 2010 Share Posted April 16, 2010 Aaaaahhhhh funny things fleas.........I once had a BIL who would not let my sister have a dog because they "have fleas and are dirty"! The moved in to a brand new home with brand new curtains and had a brand new baby, one day my sister went to get the baby from his cot and discovered a flea on him :D Turns out the new carpet in the new home was infested ;) Dogs are just the restaurant and taxi....... so needless to say once that was sorted, my sister got a dog! Our vet gives us Capstar in case we get hitchhikers (A very nice Samoyed shared some of her friends with us one afternoon). The Sentinel doesn't get all stages, as someone has already mentioned, but the Capstar knocks down the adult fleas in 30 minutes, I used it on my dog and cat when they decided to share friends from the Samoyed. Years ago someone suggested to me that Brewers Yeast fed to dogs repels fleas, a the time we lived in a bushland area and had a Gordon Setter. Can't remember if my parents let me try it out, they were very pro "Malawash", it stank, do they even make it anymore? Katdogs Posted April 17, 2010 Share Posted April 17, 2010 Everyone at our local dog park has been complaining about the flea problem in Sydney this summer, but we haven't had any so far. We use Revolution on both dogs and cat, every month including through winter because it has the heartworm prevention in it and we have mozzies year-round. The boss at our local pet food place has become an expert on flea treatment because he's been dealing with so many people and he says many don't understand the absolute fundamentals - for example, they're using a spot treatment then washing the dog straight away to get the dead fleas off them, or treating the dog and not the cat because the dog's the only one reacting to the flea bites. He's also found one person who was coming in every week for more Capstar - they just kept using it every week as a prevention. He can't get over how many people just don't read the instructions! I can join this thread, since we suddenly seem to have fleas here too I'm absolutely horrified and disgusted too, yuck. Saw these bugs crawling on her and thought oh, strange bugs, and then I thought oh no....fleas?!?! (can you tell I've been spared having to deal with them before? ) Couldn't work out how/why they'd appeared all of a sudden when she hasn't really been out, certainly hasn't been near any other dogs or cats for a fortnight now and then I read that and wondered about the 60cm deep hole to China she dug just before the fleas appeared Just spent a fortune on various products to get rid of them, hope it works, and quickly. A couple of months ago we had a bizarre mite infestation. Those little buggers burrow under your skin and left me with huge itchy welts. Bats carry wingless, bloodsucking flies. Kinda gross when you're trying to ID one and you can see these bugs crawling all over them. I was out at the lower Murrumbidgee doing fish work last year and seeing an enormous, orange and black tiger leech easily three or four times the size of the fish it was feeding off... But the worst I've seen is botflies on baby birds. They leave this big ugly hole in the skin and as you watch the little maggot pokes its head out, then ducks back in again. Yuck. I feel like all those frontline sprays I have been getting done regularly, and paying heaps for at the vet have been useless ! Grrrrr maybe it would be worse tho if i hadn't been getting them done ? I'm tempted to go down to the supermarket today (being that is Sunday and vets aren't open) and grab something in desperation just for the time being ! Any product I should avoid? Grab some Capstar tabs, they will start to kill the fleas in about 20 mins and will continue to do so for about 24 hours, put some advantage on the dogs as well, and grab some spray for the house, vac and spray, wash all bedding etc. In severe infestations, Capstar twice weekly and Advantage every 2 weeks will help, but you really need to do all your environment as well. Most areas of the country are experiencing a big flea plague just now, I'd say the weather patterns have contributed, so you are not alone. But get on to it today!
