Are There Any Side Effects From Worming A Puppy?

Hi,

Just a question... Maggie gets fed three meals a day, she is a 10 week old Golden Retriever. We have had her since Thursday. She normally scoffs down most of her meals, but today has barely touched any of her meals... (she has been eating kibble, soaked in warm water, with a teaspoon on Pal Puppy - as reccomended by the breeder). The only thing I can think of is...

1. She had her worming tablet yesterday?

2. I added a bit of garlic, yoghurt and tuna to her meals yesterday? Has that upset her?

She's still playful and happy and her stools have been normal today.

After she pretty much ignored her dinner, I gave her a bowl of her puppy milk, which she quickly finished off. Then piece by piece I started feeding her bits of her dinner which she ate. But she seemed to not be chewing - is it possible her teeth are hurting?!

I just don't know!!!!

there could be several reasons puppies go off their food.....some worm tablets can upset their tummy for a little while but that should fade by the next day.....if a dogs tummy is upset drinking milk but not eating can be a sign as the milk helps take away the feeling sick part.....I would not worry too much unless it happens for a few days in a row....

she may not find her diet palatable anymore...try mixing her food up with fresh meat, vegies and little puppy dry food......IMO Pal is no the best you could be feeding your pup there are other brands out there that dont have preservatives, additives etc....just a note tho....any changes to a pups diet should be done slowly as this can also cause a tummy upset......

dont get to stressed if she does not eat, after 10 mins if she hasnt eaten or finished take her bowl away.....try again at her next feed.....she will not let herself starve ..if she is hungry she will eat

generally puppies dont teeth till they are 5 mths old, you will notice when her teeth are bothering her as she will chew everything and I mean everything, scurting boards, all her toys, shoes, curtains, anything to make the discomfort of teething more bearable, when this happens give her lots of puppy chew toys, put them in the freezer or give her frozen chicken necks or wings etc to help relieve the pain

edited for really bad spelling

No great advice sorry, but James vomitted a couple of hours after one of his worming tablets (and was otherwise fine, both before and after) so I assume there is some digestive irritation happening.

Also, I had thought dogs shouldn't eat members of the onion/garlic family? Perhaps that could be influencing it.

I'd see how she goes over the next day or two.

Like Niques I too was told to stay away from garlic as it can be harmful :(

I think that puppies have an off day like us not wanting or feeling like eating all the time. I won't ever give Zoe tinned food, I have for my other pups in the past, but this time I am not giving it, I just give Zoe dry food. I adjust it so she now eats it all at one sitting, sometimes when she leaves a bit I add it to her kong and she will eat the rest while playing and amusing herself.

I also add tinned sardines in oil (only quarter to half a tin per day) every 2-3 days. Zoe loves it.

Also I was told that dogs and cats are lactose intolerant, so giving human yoghurt was a no no, but other puggers have done this with no problem.....I haven't yet given Zoe any because of her upset stomach from the Supercoat, but might try her on it later.

It could have also been something Maggie ate outside or inside that upset her stomach, its hard to tell. As for teething, other than wanting to chew more, I have never had a dog that went off their food or even noticed when they were teething. So I don't think it would be that. You could try looking at Maggies gums to see if there is anything wrong with them, they should be a nice bright pink, not deep red or white.

I just think you should wait and see, it might just clear up and it will be one of those things that get put into the unsolved basket....with lots more things to add in the future.

Thanks guys for your help! I'm probably just being a worried Mum... we'll see how she goes. She had her normal breakfast this morning, but I only gave her half the amount - she ate most of it... So now she's eating less than half - bah!

RE the garlic and yoghurt, that was what was advised to me by the breeder. She said she gave her puppies small amounts of garlic and yoghurt in their meals at night... hmmm... perhaps I won't do that again!

Could someone please tell me a recipe for a home made fresh meat/veggies dog mix? That would be greatly appreciated! (I too would get bored eating the same food all day everyday!!). But yes she loves that milk!

I'll keep you on the update! :(

Agree with u on the worming - can sometime give them an upset belly though i totally disagree with the frozen necks and wings as freezing them is the same as cooking - they can splinter?

I would go with a frozen kong and frozen toys, the cold is very soothing on their gums

ETA:

Search the forum for raw/natural or BARF and heaps of threads will come up on a recipe for u and also garlic is fine and is good for dogs i would say in a small amount though :)

I dont think Id be giving her yoghurt yet, not all dogs tolerate it, you are best to wait before introducing it IMHO, I want to put my girl on yoghurt.

My girl started on Pal too, but Ive slowly changed her diet, she gets a cup of kibble in the morning, at night she gets the same kibble and either an egg, a tin of sardines, some pet mince, or a chicken frame with no kibble

Must be the season for stomach upsets!

It is easy to forget and/or get distracted by the details of your particular circumstances but as a basic rule - if your pup/dog goes off their food, won't eat the usual quantity, vomits, gets diahorrea, etc. then your first reaction should be to presume that the gut is irritated.

If there are multiple vomits, if the pup/dog is depressed and has a high temperature, if there is blood in the stools, or if the symptoms are obviously severe then you should take it directly to the vet.

So firstly you should decide if the problem is severe enough to visit a vet - otherwise try the following:

If there is mild diahorrea, then fast the pup/dog for 24hours making sure that it doesn't get dehydrated, then feed a bland diet like boiled chicken (skin removed) & rice in small quantities for 3-5 days.

If there is no diahorrea then just go onto the bland diet in small quanitites until the dog for about 3-5 days or until the appetite improves.

The smaller quantities will help the dog look forward to their next meal and will either help their gut to settle or sort out the pups that are just being picky.

You have only had her a few days, stick with what her breeder was feeding.

Do not hand feed her, she will eat out of her dish when she is hungry, hand feeding sets you up to keep spoiling her.

Have a chat to your breeder.
