FranVT
Okay so I read awhile ago on here that sometimes when dogs do that little-puddle-of-bile vomit it means they're hungry. Made perfect sense to me, sometimes Atlas would do it if we were late feeding him or whatever. My issue is that Luuka does it pretty much every single morning. It's like my alarm clock (except it happens before my alarm goes off, sigh). The few retches, then the little puddle of bile. I usually get up and feed her then because I feel bad that she must be so hungry. My question is this: Is it possible that she is doing it on purpose to get fed? Probably not, right? Oh I'd also like to add that I have already booked a vet appointment for Tuesday. She doesn't seem in any way distressed about it, in fact when it wakes me up she's usually done by the time I open my eyes and I look over at her and she's wagging her tail at me. But if you guys think I should take her earlier I can probably arrange that. Should I be worried?
Aziah
I was a little late feeding my baby this morning and she did the same, I'd not think she's doing it on purpose but perhaps she's just really hungry come early morning?
Dogsfevr
if one of our dogs was throwing up bile often we would be looking at the diet.
persephone
My Kieran used to do it every morning as well.. until I started giving him a snack at bed time ;) Then it stopped. I guess some dogs ,when their tummies are empty, get in trouble from bile etc ...... He grew out of it ,luckily.
CavsRcute
I'd also go with the little snack at bed time.I had a dog that did it for 6 months and then I tried this trick...worked like a charm ;)

FranVT
Shall do, at the moment I'm giving a normal feed at approximately 0645 (I start work at 7am and I feed just as I'm leaving), a quick snack at 4pm when I get home then another meal when the other dogs get fed at around 6:30pm. Move the 6:30pm one you think? I will also discuss her diet with the vet, though I think it is fairly varied and well balanced at the moment. Guest Ams
Fran rather than move the 6.30pm meal, maybe just over her a small handful of bikkies just before bed. edit to add mine all get a single treat biscuit as I am dividing them up into whom is sleeping where. Tassie
Another vote for the snack at bedtime solution (although getting the vet check is always a good idea.) Mine always have a few bits, and then part of a Bonio sort of biscuit to go to bed with - seems to help them just to have something in ther stomachs when they go to bed (but not their whole mea.) FranVT
Good idea. I'll give her some bikkies before bed tonight and see how it goes tomorrow morning and Tuesday morning then see what the vet says as well. Better to be safe than sorry and she's due for a vet check anyway to make sure her teeth are all good post her surgery.
Black Bronson
I'd also go with the little snack at bed time.I had a dog that did it for 6 months and then I tried this trick...worked like a charm Our GSD used to do that about 4am a couple of time a week when he was around 4 to 5 months of age. A couple of dog biscuits as we went to bed at 11.30pm competely fixed the problem. Still gets his biscuit 3 years later and waits for it at bedtime
FranVT
Bit of an update for those interested Was quite a strange vet visit, the vet had never heard of dogs vomiting when hungry before She said it was really puzzling and couldn't explain why she'd be doing it 4-5 times a week. I did tell her that since I'd been giving Luuka a handful of bikkies before bedtime (10pm or so) she hadn't been vomiting and she couldn't explain that either ......... iiiinteresting. Anyway, she said that clinically she's perfect and that there were no oesophageal or intestinal issues that she could feel on palpation. I just have to keep an eye on the issue for awhile. I think we take a lot of notice of the small stuff - stuff that may not have crossed a vet's path before.
shmoo
Ive been taught at TAFE that if a dog vomits bile its the pancreas bring up the unwanted fat. I would be looking at the diet and if it is too high in fat.
FranVT
Oh cool thanks for that, yeah I checked her diet with the vet and the vet says it's perfect.
rajacadoo
Basenjis are notorious for this . Little handful of bicckies before bed, and problem solved . Having said that I think mine are bwoken, cos they dont do it at all .
