sandgrubber
Also, if you're feeling dog clucky and you like doing something for a dog, and you're tired of being wait listed, you might consider genuine rescue, from a shelter.
spottychick
I'm with everyone else. You can't buy the puppy without causing pain and suffering to more puppies and adult dogs. FUll stop. I never shop at pet shops that sell puppies etc. I had a favourite pet shop in Launceston that sold VAN products and other healthy stuff but one day I walked in and there was a sign out the front saying they had some cross-small breed (cant remember what now - shitzu and something) puppies for sale. I was shocked and questioned the owner (who I had a good relationship with till now) and he was completely clueless. "But people will buy puppies from us" he said in bewildered consternation. I gave him a lecture and told him he'd just lost a valuable regular and I wouldn't be back till I can be sure he's stopped supporting puppy farms. SO anyway - that's my feelings on it. Now I buy exclusively off the internet for my dogs, except meat etc which I buy from a local butcher.
Cockerlover
Why do u think they have puppies in the windows of so called pet shops ??????? so suckers like u will inpulse buy ,knowing NOTHING of the background of yr sweet little bundle For doGs sake go to a reputable registared breeder ,meet the parents ,& have breeder support . NO reputable breeder would sell to a *pet shop* PET shop..... means People EasiallyTempted. registared breeders r bound by code of ethics not to sell to *pet *shops. Good luck with your search for a dedication & friend FOR LIFE
Guest acb123
We aren't getting the pup....I'm on the list with some breeders from DOL. I thought I would post here to get my sadness out I can't go to these pet shops without feeling sad So I just have to go to one that doesn't supply pets
mantis
I won't even buy dog supplies from petshops that sell animals. I walk in & if I see dogs or kittens for sale, I say in a loud voice, I'm in the wrong store, I refuse to financially support a place who encourages backyard breeders & impulse buying of pets & walk out. ILK
Not a chance.... Don't do it...... I know the puppy is beautiful & sweet & cute and all that, but it isn't worth the price that will be payed by the following puppies lives. We must put a stop to petshop babies it is abuse and we musn't support it.
Guest acb123
Why isn't there some kind of legislation against this? I can't think of one VALID reason to sell animals in this manner! It was obvious the other people in the store were thinking of buying the pup as an impromptu buy with full knowledge they probably wouldn't keep it (that was the words of the person looking at it). I think that's why I wanted to save it
lappiemum
generally, once the sale is made, its not their problem anymore. Petshops are there to make money, and there are enough people out there who think its normal to buy from a petshop. There is a lot of education than needs to happen. juice
it is very hard to walk away. i don't buy anything from petshops that sell pups. however i do go to the markets to buy flowers and have to walk past the cages with pups in, last year i had the same dilema when i saw my fave breed ,3 cattle pups, at the 'too big to sell' stage. i came home, mulling over how i could buy them and desex them and find homes etc, but i knew i had to leave them in reality, not easy though
HugUrPup
I was in a pet shop today buying a clicker and I saw a sign stating..our puppies don't come from puppy farms. So I asked if they come from breeders and was told yes.. so I said good they come with papers then yeh? No so they come from BYB's? The guy said it's illegal for a puppy shop to sell with papers. I said, unless there is documentation to say they are from registered breeders, then what you claim about them not coming from puppy farms, could be untrue. I said, that anyone who reads that notice and understands what a puppy farm is, would not buy a dog from your store, so you might as well remove it. He did however, when I asked about registered breeders, say that when someone comes asking for a pure breed, he has a breeder list and he refers on. I asked about Bichon Frise and sure enough, he wrote 2 numbers down on a card and they were legit. I was impressed. As far as the OP goes, I agree with everyone else, you contribute to the problem if you buy from a puppy shop.. it keeps them in business which is what we don't want. If you feel so bad seeing them in there.. don't go in there. Find pet supply shop which doesn't sell pets.
ILK
I can truly see where you are coming from acb123. Pet shop puppies look even more beautiful to us knowledgable dog lovers because we understand the misery behind the lovely window puppy. I won't even look in a petshop window so as not to attract other onlookers. I can see lovely babies through the corner of my eye, but I will not partake in any way for the sale of these babies and I will not purchase anything from a petshop that supplies babies. There is a lot of education than needs to happen. I just got back from Los Angeles After seeing a puppy being "walked out of a pet store" & heard salesperson say "keep him away from puddles/dogs sniffing" I didn't know what to say/do as the poor pup was being dragged out of the store.....I was so far away from saying something All I can say is "NO" and agree with previous posts and this store(in LA) that sells "pure breeds"if I told you all the breeds for sale you would all die ,it is a wealthly area too - it is just sickening seeing them piled up 3 stories high in glass cages Above says it all as far as I am concerned. Frankie
What irriates me about petstores- is that often on the cages of the overpriced undesexed puppies and kittens are signs saying that they will offer people money for any kittens or puppies that they will sell. May put dollar signs in some people's eyes. When you are choosing a pet- think it will hopefully be part of your family for 15 years + So keep walking or don't look-as said already- buying these pups contributes to the problem. Some US petstores in the US- Petsmart- only sell/rehome shelter animals- kudos to them.
rastus_froggy
NO I would not buy ANYTHING from a store that sells pets. I was recently very disappointed when I went into my local stock feed shop only to discover they have started selling pups and kittens and they "specialise" in the designer breeds - their example was a pom X dacshund
JulesP
I feel your pain. I would find it hard to walk away from a cute border collie pup if I found one in a pet shop.
manlynau
I would never buy from a petshop that sells live animals. I avoid going anywhere near them because its far too upsetting. My very simple view is if there are no customers buying then they would not be selling the live animals.
J.H.M
Same here won't buy from a pet shop that sell puppies/kittens, but its kind of a bummer where I live because there is a great store that sells a great range of snake stuff and roo tails and the like, oh well that is the price of having principles I guess
