jeanie
Hi there, I have just became the proud owner of 2 Cavoodle Puppies, and I have need some advice on a few thinkgs, I hope someone can help They are now 9 weeks old and for the first week they would sleep in the laundry and would not do their business in there at all, but all of a sudden they are going about 3-5 times????? Why?? I taket hem out just before bed around 10 ish, then they get up around 6 :30 ish. I also would like to know how much to feed a new puppy? I have got some Purina Supercoat as that was what they were eating when they left the breeder, Should i leave a bowl there all day for them to come back to or feed them at specific times of the day?? and also how much?? These are the two things that are bothering me so far! The toilet training is going ok I have newspaper down and they are tending to go on that which is good and they go outside to, there is the occassional accident, but not bad so far. Thanks for reading and I would appreciate any advice you guys out there may have for me. Jeanie
Kirislin
Hi Jeanie, I would suggest separate feeding bowls, dont just put one bowl down with enough for two as you wont be sure each is getting the right amount. Have structured feeding times. For puppies that age I fed mine 3 times a day. You need to clean the area that they've piddled in thoroughly and then wipe down with white vinegar to neutralise the amonia smell or they will continually go back there. Sounds like you need to take them out more often for toileting too. Use a command when they are actually doing their wees and eventually they will understand that when you say that word,or command they have to do their business. Lots of praise when they get it right too.
Daisy
Hi Jeanie, hopefully you will get some more advice soon. I just want to say this politely though, be prepared for some flack, as this is a pure-bred forum that is frequented by people who do not believe in the deliberate crossbreeding of dogs such as cavalier x poodle as your puppies are. Also, a lot of breeders do not believe in rehoming two littermates together, there are a lot of problems that can arise from having two puppies of the same age. You will be in for a lot of hard work. Try searching the forum, there have been quite a few threads on the difficulties of raising two puppies together. I truly hope that your pups are not both females, as that can also mean more problems as they mature, worst case scenario being they may try to kill each other and have to be kept permanently seperated. For the sake of the pups I hope none of the worst consequences happen. If you had bought your pups from a reputable, registered breeder, they would certainly have discussed all these issues with you before you got the pups, and would now have been available to give you support and guidance. I am not trying to give you a hard time, obviously you did not know any better, but hoping that you will stick around and learn why people here are so against 'designer' cross breeds, so that you will know better in the future. Thanks for reading and I would appreciate any advice you guys out there may have for me. Jeanie Thankyou for not buying your pups untill they are eight weeks old. Unfortunatley you have been duped and there is no breed called a Cavoodle. If you haven't realised; a cavoodle is nothing more then a mutt, two breeds bred together at a puppy farm and given a "designer" name to sell easier. Educate yourself on puppy farms, designer dogs and their health issues. Buying two puppies at once, you're likely going to have problems with them as they grow. Seperate them often so that you can still bond with your mutts (or you can call them Cavs x Poodles) or it may end in tears. Okay, Toilet training. Every time your pup gets excited, wakes up, drinks, eats or starts sniffing the ground - take it to the designated toilet area and wait for it to toilet. It's easiest to do this on leash, as soon as you witness the pup toilet give it a command (IE: go wees). Repeat this and eventually the pup will recognise that "Go Wees"means that it is required to go to the toilet so that it can come back inside. Puppies have weak bladders, and will go during the night often. You need to be prepared to either lcean this up first thing in the morning, or wake up during the night once or twice a night untill the habit of bladder control is settled. As for feeding your puppies. Read the bag of dog food you are feeding your dog. If you are still unsure; take the pup to your vet and talk to him/her. Your pups need to be vaccinated, wormed and checked over anyway; seeing as though you didn't go through a registered breeder. Best of luck with your dogs. Clyde
I agree re having two puppies - terribly hard work even for the experienced. Perhaps the laundry area is still quite big? A crate would keep them more confined overnight thus encouraging them to hold on. you might have to get up at say, 4am and let them out for wees/poos. Not many pups at that ages can go all the way through. Re the food, I would definitely try a better brand. As a groomer I see lots of Poodle/Cav crosses and they are prone to smelly ears - Supercoat is notorious for ear infections and the stinks. Perhaps even the Supercoat is encouraging them to poo overnight as they do tend to poo a lot on that food. If you choose to feed dry food I would opt for Eagle Pack or Royal Canin and some chicken necks/wings (raw). Good luck with your new pups PS. I would try to eradicate the paper thing now and just encourage them to take themselves outside. Edited April 5, 2010 by Clyde
poodlefan
The best advice I can offer is to read the advice here thoroughly and to book both pups in to the groomers once a month from now until they are about 8 months old. Oh and book both into puppy schools - take them separately. Edited April 5, 2010 by poodlefan
Kirislin
Ah yes, another thing I forgot to mention. Get them used to being brushed, dont let them bite or play with the brush, just get them used to letting you brush them. I see so many long coated breeds and x bred dogs with the most awful matted, stinking, flea ridden coats because they were bought as cute little fluff balls but no thought was given to grooming them throughout their lives. Please get them and yourself used to it now. Every day, brush them. Good luck with your puppies.
GoldenGirl85
If I was you I would crate train them, if you are unfamiliar with crate training do a search on these boards, I am so glad I crate trained my pup, before I got her I didnt know a lot about crate training and why you would use it, Im currently in the process of crate training my 8yo JRT because I was so impressed with the results with my pup If you are unable to take the puppies to seperate puppy preschool classes get someone else to take one of the pups and encourage them to play with the other pups, not each other As for the Cavoodle thing, just a friendly note that you will be much better dropping the fancy name, as a couple of others have said there is no such breed and if you insist on calling them Cavoodles you wont make a lot of friends on here, just recognise them for the cross breeds that they are and you wont have any problems

nicolatu
Hi guys, my BC puppy doesn't like to go toilet in his play tent and he would hold on till we bring him out. I am worried because when he came to us last week, he had an urinary tract infection. He would hold from 10+pm till I bring him out in the morning at about 6am. Is that all right? He doesn't smell bloody after eating some anti biotics.

How old is your pup? 8 hours is a long time to expect a puppy to hold on, all of mine went in the middle of the night and occasionally twice a night for a month or so once they were home. Even now at nearly 3 one of mine still goes to the loo in the middle of the night. What does the bolded part of your post mean? Why would he smell bloody? do you mean he had anti biotics for the UTI? MsKatie
Hi jeanie - I would agree with the advice given - I am feeding 3 times a day with a mix of raw and dried and am still getting up once a night most nights to let my pup out to pee (he is 6 months). I would let them out just before you go to bed and then get up at about 2 to take them out again - I use the word 'toilet' for mine and it works well - he knows that when I say that he needs to pee before he gets back in. Good luck with your pups and you will find lots of useful advice here

He holds on till the next morning(6am) when I bring him out. Seems like it's not good for him. Tonight I will bring him out for toilet. His UTI causes blood in his wee so he smell "bloody". Nic That is a really long time for a puppy not to go to the toilet. Also if this play tent has his bed or toys in there then he'll not want to toilet near them - he needs a toileting area further away from where he sleeps and plays, or better yet to be taken outside to go toilet during the night. sas
If you're using toileting mats, make sure they are a decent distance away from where puppy eats and sleeps otherwise they won't feel comfortable using them.
