Breeds That Are Similar - History

Can any one give me, or point me in the direction of, history of Parson Russell & Jack Russell Terriers and also Norwich and Norfolk Terriers? I'm interested in how and when these breeds diverged, how long they have been recognised as individual breeds, how much variance there are in the breeds both genetically and phenotypically.

PS: Are there any other similar closely related, but separate breeds recognised by the ANKC?

Depends on how close you're talking.

Cocker Spaniel/English Springer Spaniel

Weimeraner/Wei long hair (and my bad spelling)

Collie Rough/Collie Smooth

Four breeds of Belgian Shepherd

the list goes on... there are lots of them. As I said, it really depends on how close you are talking.

Particularly interested in breeds that may have been split for differences of look or function, but have had little or no other breeds infused to get the "final product", so to speak.

then all of my list apply.

There is still interbreeding between some of the breeds that I have listed.

The Miniature Fox Terrier and Tenterfield Terrier are particularly interesting especially when you get into the conformational differences, although the MFT isn't recognised by the ANKC.

Thanks everyone.

Another question: When is a group considered a breed in its own right? The ABS have the ANKC regs up on their site: http://www.australianbulldogsociety.com/regulations.htm . Would this generally be what is accepted, or is there a scientific definition or anything else?

And before anyone says anything: No I'm not about to go out and breed weird dogs or anything, just interested in understanding all this more

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Pembroke Welsh Corgi - they were allowed to interbreed as a Welsh Corgi when they were first recognised by the kennel club, until the Cardigan breeders sucessfully campaigned to seperate them again. Cardi's are bigger, longer, have a different ear set, smoother coats, and a wider range of colours allowed, and they are quite different temperaments.

You might also want to look at the Presa Canario/Dogo Canario Breed, It's almost exactly the same that occured with your APBT/AST type all those years ago, only this breed split into seperation only a few years ago.

one keeping its predominant working line on, one more show line.

1 allowed for now, one not etc. 2 breed standards, one in foundation with the AKC in America etc.

I am only guessing this is for comparisons with your breed and something or other about thatw hole thing.
