What do you do if you have found a really good example of your breed on main register, a pet dog who is entire, but the dog's Breeder no longer breeds and is not a registered breeder anymore ? The owner of the dog is a pet owner and not a VCA member.

You just cry a lot! I think the OP would like to use the dog but I don't think there's anyway you can. Perhaps phone your State bod. and enquire. Had something of the same situation years back - best looking and bred dog I'd seen for ages - pet owner who wasn't interested in joining 'that lot' even when I offered to pay all expenses and this boy was the last of a line

Offer to lease the dog for stud duties for whatever the minimum period is? Offer to pay their membership fee?

Personally I think it's really weird that the stud dog owner needs to be a member of anything for their dog to be bred from by a registered breeder.

Yep, ask to lease the dog, on paper so you will be listed as the owner until after you breed the litter. Pay the lease fee, and pay the owner a stud fee. Once the lease expires, the dog's ownership reverts back to the owner.

Unless the breeder signed the transfer to the pet owner and the pet owner is willing to become a member of your State bod and the time restrictions on transferring haven't expired then there's not a thing you can do. Like I had to - 'fraid you will have to find another stud. Some of the best examples of a breed are running around in someones yard as a pet.

Yes so very true.............sad but true.

I feel for the OP...........you won't be the first and sadly won't be the last to find "the dog" that is a pet in somebody's back yard who you can't use for what ever reason........

If the dog is in the current owner's name, you can pay a stud fee, and pay their membership fee with the local CC, and then you should be able to use the dog. As long as the owner is willing.

If the breeder is the legal owner, pay their membership, if everyone is willing.

That's how it works in this state

Of course, if the dog has never been used at stud, he might not be willing or able.

A friend of mine took one of her own dogs back because he needed a home. Owners had never transferred the paperwork. She had a good look at him, when "hmmm" and used him over a bitch who happened to come in. Litter of lovely pups!!

Pretty much what Jed said -

I was a step behind you - I found a dog on limited regster in a pet home and the breeder was no longer with the VCA.

Essentially you can breed with the dog as long as you have the breeders's support.

So:

Track down the breeder and get in contact with them.

Tell them you want to use a dog they bred. Make sure you can tell them WHY.

If the dog is still in the breeder's name, then pay the breeder's membership so they can sign off on the breeding.

If the dog is in the owner's name, pay their membership.
