Men mauled to death as council fails to control pack of wild dogs roaming town

A MAN suffocated to death when he was attacked by a pack of dogs while drunk, the Northern Territory coroner has found.

The Northern Territory News reports Michael Anthony Hardy, 26, and Robert James Roe, 47, were attacked by dogs at Hidden Valley Camp, Alice Springs within three weeks of each other in 2008.

Coroner Greg Cavanagh found that Mr Hardy was drunk and suffocated to death when the pack of dogs attacked.

Mr Hardy had "innumerable" lacerations from a pack of dogs.

"This would have been a terrifying attack and a terrible way for the deceased to have spent his last moments of his life," Mr Cavanagh said.

The coroner found problems between councils over animal management led to a "serious and significant problem" with dogs at Territory town camps.

Mr Roe's body was mauled by dogs after he died from a heart attack in the same camp three weeks later, in August, 2008.

Mr Cavanagh said it was "very clear" Mr Roe's body was "attacked and eaten by dogs (after his death), which is a serious and tragic matter, indeed".

The coroner found there had been a number of dog attacks in the camps, but nothing had been done because Tangentyere Council made it difficult for Alice Springs Town Council rangers to police dog numbers in the town.

"It is simply unacceptable that in the 21st-Century citizens of a town in Australia are regularly subjected to packs of dogs roaming the streets of their community killing, mauling, biting, attacking and eating parts of those citizens," Mr Cavanagh said

The people in the picture don't appear to be showing much fear of the dogs.

Also while the headline says 'Men mauled to death....' the article then goes on to say only one man was mauled while alive, the other had already died from a heart attack before the dogs started to eat him.

Looks like the dogs aren't the only thing that's gone out of control. I'm not sure I want to hear the gruesome details, but I wouldn't take it for granted that the dogs were the problem. Looks like the dogs may have plenty problems of their own.

The coroner needed to dig deeper. Community attitudes to dogs also play a significant role.

Got to have a wry smile at the concept of external solutions to these issues in indigenous communities when so many folk who live in them are "anti-intervention".
