becandcharch
This morning Asha woke up making a honking noise and seemed to be trying to cough something up. She has been with OH all day and hasnt stopped. I have done a bit of reading and it sounds like kennel cough. She was at the dog park with a bunch of other dogs yesterday. Does it catch that quickly?? OH is taking her to the vet at 3 just to check her out. I just read that it lasts a few weeks and a lot of people dont take them to the vet as it just goes away?? On the phone the vet said they may need to put her on antibiotics. What are other dolers experiences? Thanks Edited March 30, 2010 by becandcharch
persephone
kennel(Canine) cough is a virus- so antibiotics are unneccesary UNLESS there is a secondary lung/throat bacterial infection. Most cases I've know do get better themselves :D I think incubation is around a week.... an important thing to realise is that the virus acts on the dog's windpipe "just' where collars go! S0- collars/walking on leash will usually make them cough more Rest, warm, manuka honey, benadryl cough mix.... all will help her feel better .Any gunky eyes, snotty nose, lack of appetite- then a vet visit. persephone
Where do you get manuka honey from? you can ask at a pharmacy, or some bigger supermarkets, but a health food store would be helpful get one with a high UMF rating.... it will help kill any nasties, and soothe the throat :)It's not cheap :D Edited March 30, 2010 by persephone

Erny
Great, thanks for that. I'm a tight arse when it comes to me but the dogs get whatever they need straight away! .... Sounds a bit like me. But do be prepared so as to not fall off your chair. Expect to pay around $50+ for a 250g jar. If you're paying a lot less, I'd be dubious about whether it has the UMF that you need. I don't bother much with any other than the Active Manuka Honey UMF20+ . Try at your supermarket, although I've only ever been able to source UMF5+ from there and it's not (IMO) worth bothering (for the purpose in mind). I buy mine from our local Health Food Store. Kelly_Louise
Thanks PF and thanks for the heads up erny. Wow, must be magic honey! :D Ohhhh, it really is... works wonders for many things. I bought it for Sash when she has KC, was great. I also use it when she's got tummy problems or feeling a bit off... it's wonderful stuff. If you can't find it in health stores near you, have a quick look online at Australian vitamin/health stores - I buy mine online as it can be hard to find BTW - I totally agree about being a tighta$$... but when it comes to my girls... NEVER!!! Hope the lovely Asha gets better soon

Kelly_Louise
I wish you could get Manuka honey in WA, I'd love some. Have a look at some online Australian health food stores - they usually have it and will deliver to you. That's how I get mine Like this store: http://www.vitaminking.com.au/search.php?m...arch&page=1 But if you Google it you might be able to find something closer to you. Erny
KL - I believe there is a prohibition on the import of things like honey into WA, even via interstate boarders.
becandcharch
Update on the little patient. Well vet says its not a bad case however he did give her 5 days worth of anti-biotics. I usually like to take the dogs to the vet as OH never asks the questions I would and I probably would have questioned if this was necessary. We changed vets so many times until I was happy with this guy and really feel the dogs are in good hands. Like myself I dont like taking antibiotics if I can do it the natural way. Thoughts?? You wouldnt know anything was wrong with her, she is boucing around like the usual nutbag she is. I looked for Manuka honey at a few supermarkets but as suspected they only had the cheap stuff. Kelly_Louise
Sasha had 3 or so bouts last year... the only time I gave her antibiotics is when she had a bit of discharge from her eyes and nose. It was only a tiny amount of discharge, and she probably could have gotten over it - but because this was on her third bout, I thought her immune system might not be strong enough. Otherwise, I just give her the active manuka honey, and also some vitamin supplements to help boost up her immune system. It's up to you whether you give her the antibiotics or not, I'm like you - I like them to be able to fight things off themselves if possible (they are young and strong so should be able to)... but seeing you don't know her full health history she may struggle to get over it if she has weakened lungs etc. If you don't feel comfortable giving them to her, maybe give her a couple of days, and if she gets any worse or has any discharge, then start them? They won't do any harm though.
Kelly_Louise
KL - I believe there is a prohibition on the import of things like honey into WA, even via interstate boarders. Oh really? I knew that you can't import it from overseas (I didn't know this and ordered some from NZ - and then had to cancel order)... but didn't know it was interstate too. No one in WA produces it? Kennel cough can be caused by several airborne bacteria and viruses. However, most cases of kennel cough are actually caused by the bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica (but also by Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Parainfluenza). This is why vets will often give antibiotics as it will clear up the infection more quickly if it is indeed caused by the bacteria. My dog has had it twice and has recovered quickly without intervention. Hope she is feeling better soon ;)
becandcharch
Thanks guys. Vet did say that it would clear up quicker with anti-biotics. Just not something I want to unless necessary. Will finish this course though as I do value his judgement and will be sure take the dogs myself next time so I can drill them with all of my questions. Thanks for all of your input. On a good note, we have discovered that her allergies are food related and thankfully not something in our yard. That was going to be a PITA to figure out. She was strickly on roo and totally stopped itching. We just introduced only chicken to her diet and she is back itching agian like before.
