HollyMilo
Why are these shows always on when I am on afternoon shift?!?!?! I've had a look at the shows website and you can look through archives, read story transcripts and watch the video footage. Last nights is up there already this morning, so you should be able to watch the story that way when you have time. Elfin
Little precursor to tonight's show... http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/03/30/2860398.htm The RSPCA says it is pushing for tougher licensing and better monitoring of puppy farms after a series of raids uncovering cruelty to animals. In one raid on a property south of Sydney nearly 200 dogs were seized. The puppy farm operator whose property is shown in the RSPCA footage to be aired tonight on ABC1's 7.30 Report was fined a total of $155,000 and banned from owning animals for 10 years. NSW RSPCA inspector Lisa Lindsay says the dogs were living in appalling conditions. "The rooms where the puppies were were so overcrowded. There were dead puppies lying around just on cupboards, in with the mothers, the smell was unbelievable," she said. Ms Lindsay says strong demand for "designer mutts", such as the cavoodle, labradoodle and spoodle, is fuelling the growing industry. The RSPCA faces significant legal hurdles in trying to prosecute puppy farmers doing the wrong thing, and is calling on governments and responsible dog breeders to stop operations where dogs are treated as little more than profitable breeding machines. In the worst cases dogs are kept in tiny cages with little human contact, developing physical as well as psychological problems. It is claimed that breeding females have back-to-back litters for five or six years, then are destroyed. RSPCA Qld chief inspector Michael Pecic says the puppy industry is a lucrative trade which is extremely difficult to police, and it is growing. "It's a cash flow industry. They're after the dollar sign and that's what they see the animal as, just as a dollar sign and it's the end product they're concerned about," he said. But the Hams family, which operates Banksia Park Puppies east of Melbourne, allowed the 7.30 Report to film at its property, stressing that not all big breeders do the wrong thing. Matt Hams says he is happy with the way dogs are treated on his farm. "[but] like any industry that's not heavily regulated, there's that room there for someone to come along and make a quick dollar, and due to lack of community education people don't know where their pups come from," he said. Animal Liberationist Debra Tranter has taken the law into her own hands, trespassing onto a series of puppy farms in an effort to expose cruelty. She says no matter what the conditions, mass breeding of dogs is wrong. "I think the entire industry is a problem. I don't think we should be factory farming companion animals," she said. "We're killing so many dogs in pounds and shelters we certainly don't need to be breeding any more on such a massive scale." ABC1 will tonight broadcast an investigation into the lucrative puppy breeding trade on the 7.30 Report.
whippets
That report was so upsetting. Seen it all before. Nothing has changed. It's getting worse. If that Matt Hamm guy thinks he is "Farming" dogs in an ethical way then he has rocks in his head. How much socialisation do those poor dogs get!!! NONE. The dogs didn't look happy at all and temperaments in the resulting pups would be questionable.

Her Majesty Dogmad
Hope a wide audience watched this documentary. Puppy farmers are lowlife, moral bankrupts for making money from the suffering of animals. People need to understand where their cute little designer fluff comes from. And as for Steve Austin - what a sell out, had his chance to condemn these disgusting practice and the petshop industry but hey, it's not that bad really! I wonder what they expect "responsible dog breeders" to do to stop operations where dogs are treated as little more than profitable breeding machines??? Maybe they mean dobbing in puppy farmers where they are suspected? I've seen posts on here that suggest a lot of breeders have some knowledge of who is ethical and who is not in the dog breeding world. I don't know enough about the dog breeding world but I know in horse breeding there are people I would consider unethical in their breeding practices by churning out poor quality animals that have a high likelihood of ending up as meat, the ones who will listen are lectured ad nauseum about it, I would like to report the ones that don't listen but since the horses have shelter and food nothing can be done. Jed
I've just watched the 7.30 report, and I agree with Debra Tranter of AL that dogs should not be kept as agricultural animals, so the basic premise of puppy farms is wrong. However, from the footage shown on the puppy farm south of Sydney which was raided, the dogs did not look badly kept, and they certainly weren't in bad condition. Lots of them were going up to the inspectors, wagging and looking for a pat. Shame the inspector picked the blenheim cavalier up by the scruff of the neck and held her at arm's length when she ran up to him looking for pats. Presumably there were other issues not shown on TV, but a lot of healthy looking dogs, some fluffy outgoing pups (and a totally filthy fridge!!) didn't do it for me. And I couldn't tell the difference between the dogs at the farm raided, and those at Banksia Farms - the facilities were newer, but nothing looked better to me. Or different. Maybe it's just me? But don't think I approve, I don't, not at all, but I failed to see a real problem at the first farm. Maybe it was all hidden? Dogs were in good condition, groomed or clipped off, pups were round and bouncy. What did others think?

The dogs didn't look happy at all and temperaments in the resulting pups would be questionable. I couldnt agree more. Those poor dogs forced to spend their lives in those shitty conditions. As if theyre "happy". What a load of crap. They were pacing. And note also when this i@i*t was talking, someone was in the background playing with some dogs. How damn obvious is that??? probably the first and only time theyve been let out of their pens. I say Get a real job mate and stop profiting off these animals. And he didnt sound too convincing when asked "How often do they have pups?" replying every 18 mths - BULLSHITE - more like every 6 mths!!!!! And I agree all those pups and dogs looked terribly unhappy. I note when I am going through sites like GT and you see the oodles, noodles, and shmoodles advertised, the pups always look sad. And its not hard to tell which sellers are farming them. Some have several litters at any one time of diff so called designer breeds. Oh and they love occassions like Christmas and Easter - what better reason to buy a pup??? :D :D I always report those ads as offensive, sometimes theyre removed, sometimes not. Imagine after a little rain, those pens wold be mush pits. How very, very sad. I missed the first 10 mins or so, but what I saw was enough to anger and sadden me.
