Greytmate
Italmum have you looked at the "mature" dogs listed here? There are 11 listed, several are under 1 year old and most are under 4. yes i have - but someone wisely said..which has made me change my mind..its better to get a puppy - because you dont know if the older dogs have been around children. and they might not have the right temperament ..or something along those lines lol:) this thread seems never ending , and i keep going round in lil circles I disagree with this advice. Not wise advice at all, and probably from somebody that doesn't know anything about rehoming adult dogs. An older dog that has been living with kids and is good with them is a much safer bet than a pup. The thing is to talk to the breeder/owner and get information about the dog's past. Obviously a dog that has been living in a kennel without any contact with kids isn't going to be suitable, but you can find out that information, and you can see how the dog reacts to the kids. Temperament is much easier to judge in adult dogs than it ever will be in pups. With pup you will only ever judge the potential, not the actual temperament. megan_
I've found with some breeders they want you to "push" a little to prove that you're serious (not a tactic I'd necessarily endorse, but each to their own). For example, my cousin bought a certain breed (let's call it an X) for her parents (they knew the dog was coming etc, she was the one who paid for it). She has 4 smallish children and mentioned to the breeder that she wanted an X too in the next few months. Breeder said she didn't sell an X to anyone with small kids - not suitable etc. Cousin stayed in touch with her, visited parents' dog , did research (on the breed, on crate training) etc. A year later, she contacted the breeder again and the breeder was happy to sell her an X. She had, in the breeder's eyes, proven that she understood what an X required, and were serious about wanting one. The puppy is now 5 months old and is living a great life with the kids. The breed is a bigger than a cav though and is more robust. If you really want a dog, I think it is wise to be polite put firm - chase people up and be sure to ask for feedback and advise. Why are people knocking you back? Do the breeders that are "rejecting" you suggest an older dog? I agree with PF here, older dogs are much more of a "known" quantity. If a breeder is worth their salt, they would have socialised the dog. If they aren't socialising their older dogs, I wouldn't want a pup from them anyway. ETA: Even if a dog hasn't been living with kids, they still might be very used to them and get on like a house on fire. It all depends on the dogs temprement and the level of socialisation that they've had. Edited April 1, 2010 by megan_

I disagree too, especially with cavs. My female (which I adopted from the pound) is better with kids than my male which we have had since 8 weeks. She is loads calmer and tolerates kids much better. My male just gets over excited and wants them to throw a ball all the time.
poodlefan
I honestly think that a call to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Victoria would be time well spent. For the Pet Referral Service Phone 1300 850
poodle proud
Hi, Sorry to the OP for this hijack but I need some help. I know someone who like the OP has waited ages for a pup. They finally got to the stage of paying a deposit and organised a pick-up date but now the breeder has renigged on the pup at the last minute. Any advice on where they stand? Monah
I honestly think that a call to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Victoria would be time well spent. For the Pet Referral Service Phone 1300 850 844 Excellent we have also had 4 older dogs, one age 7 when we got her, who have all been fantastic with kids etc. and you do know what you are getting. another dog I've had since a young puppy does not like them much at all But I dont have kids now so we manage very well. Greytmate
Frankly? Nowhere. Tell them to cut their losses and try again. Really? Even though they have accepted funds and have a contract in writing? They need to request a refund in writing. They need to state that they have paid a deposit on a pup of a certain age from a certain litter, the pup is no longer available, and a refund of deposit is required. Then they can go to the Small Claims court if the breeder doesn't refund the deposit. They should give up on the idea of getting the actual dog. That won't happen.
