ellz
Entropion is when the eyelids roll/fold inwards. Distichiasis is when an "extra" row of eyelashes grow inside the eyelid. Editing to add: And yes, Staffords are prone to this. Edited March 27, 2010 by ellz

Elfin
Distichiasis or ectopic cillia? Distichiasis are an extra row of lashes, growing so close to the eyelid margin that they irritate the cornea. Ectopic cillia are eyelashes trying to grow "backwards", they are actually on the inside of the eyelid margin, like an "ingrown" hair. They also irritate the cornea. Either way, a specialist ophthalmologist with an operating microscope is called for. All the best for your friend's dog.
ellz
Elfin, my bet was distichiasis due to the breed. Very common in Staffords unfortunately.
Rainy
Its definatly distichiasis the vet confirmed it this morning, i will have more info tomorrow when my normal vet gets back to work
Red Fox
My boy has Distichiasis. He had surgey at around 14 weeks to remove the extra lashes but unfortunately he had more grow back in a different place a few months later. I was advised that surgery will permanently change the shape of the eye so if they weren't bothering him then they were best left alone. (The first lot were quite far in and painful for him so had to be removed. But luckily the susequent lashes that have grown have only been just inside the rim and haven't caused too much of an issue.) For now I have had success in checking his eyes regularly and plucking any stray lashes out myself. I also make a point of having his eyes checked every time we visit the vet. Sorry I can't help you with advice on a specialist but wish you the best of luck with your boys op :D
Rainy
Hi all i still havnt decided on a Opthamologist yet as im getting slightly confused, some people are telling me to have the flolicals (sp?) frozen out and some are saying to get then cut out, opinions needed please. I had done a fair amount of research on the net and it seems to lean toward cutting not freezing thanks again
Red Fox
Kei had his cut out. As far as I'm aware there is a better success rate with cutting out the follicles rather than freezing.
Sandra777
Hi all i still havnt decided on a Opthamologist yet as im getting slightly confused, some people are telling me to have the flolicals (sp?) frozen out and some are saying to get then cut out, opinions needed please. I had done a fair amount of research on the net and it seems to lean toward cutting not freezing thanks again I would be guided by the vet specialist. From what I have heard the best treatment depends on many factors including age, density of the hair, number of the hairs etc etc etc. Leave your options open and find a specialist that will give you both sides of the story AFAIK For a few fine lashes laser usually works fine, for a whole row of bristly ones multiple treatments are likely to be required anyway. Elfin
Staffy + Distichiasis = transconjunctival excision (cutting) Done properly, there will be NO change in the shape of the lids (I have never heard of this before). As there are roughly 15% of hair follicles inactive at any one time, and you can only cut out what you can see, there is a 15% chance of a second surgery being required.
