Blue_Ice
Hi everyone, I have an Alaskan Malamute, who is just on 7mths of age and who just loves water. My problem is and i am hoping someone out there has some ideas for me. He finds his water bowls fun to play in, he tips them out, or digs into them to make it splash around. I have even tried a 9L bucket but he just uses his nose and tips it over too. Has anyone had a similar experience? If so how did u overcome it? Is it cos he is bored? We walk twice a day for an hour we do obedience training in the back yard (whole other topic lol). When i go to work i worry he will run out of water before i am home so i am in desperate need of help. I try to catch him out and give a quick "no" and reward when he just drink normally. I have been told northern breeds like mals love to play with water bowls so surely someone out there can HELP??????? please. Thanks

sparkycat
My Lappie loves water too -so I found a very heavy ceramic bowl at a garden centre that lives under the tap and she also has a kids shell pool that she paddles in (especially after going for a walk). corvus
Yes, Erik was tipping his water out all over the floor and bringing me the bowl. They now have a ceramic bowl, but it holds less water so more refilling. We have a cement one for outdoors that not even a Mal would be able to shift. I can barely lift it. luvsablue
When she was a puppy she always pawed the water before drinking. Hasn't done it for years. Maybe it is an instinct to clear the water first. luvsablue, Beckie the Blue Dog
Tilly
My brat has managed to empty or tip out his water from numerous different bowls. I tried large tubs of water, kiddie pool, 20l buckets partially and fully buried in the ground, concrete barrels ... and he has destroyed or emptied every one. I even used a concrete laundry tub with pavers in the bottom to stop his removed the plugs ... he just used the pavers to smash the concrete tub. I have just brought another 3 bay concrete tub and it is sealed off underneath so I don't need to worry about him removing the plugs. So far it has been working well. kathq
I have for my girls a heavy plastic bucket that has hooks attached so it can hang off the wire of their run. It looks like one of those horse feed bins but is made of plastic instead of metal. Hung at the height that they get their head in and not their feet. To soothe the need for water play they have a clam shell to dig, roll or lie in. Problem solved here

Nicole...
I also had the same problem with my BC playing in both the water bowls I leave while I'm at work and coming home to them being bone dry. My solution was to buy a clamshell pool which has solved the problem. Not sure whether they care if they're drinking from a pool or bowl, and the pool is more fun to splash your feet in than the bowl but I now come home to both water bowls holding water as well as the pool so problem solved!
