As for seeing them stressed – again it's from personal perspective and knowing my dogs so well. There was a huge difference in their manner compared to the last time they stayed at a different kennels.

Trust your judgement, you know how stressed they were.

I have tried a few kennels here as I used to travel often for work and dog sitting friends can only do so much. I judge them by the state my dogs are in when I get them home, and how long it takes them to bounce back. Several I wouldn't touch with a barge pole ever again.

I jus twanted to say that your dogs "wanting to get out of there and you never having seen them move so fast" is not uncommon. They all know they are going home when you go and grab their things and lead etc and in my experience they have "all" ran/pulled like mad to get to the front and then the car.

As for being noisy it usually is when people show up/new dogs come in and also at feed times. Most of the time they are pretty good and settle down when nothing is going on.

I just wanted to say that these things should not be held against the boarding kennel.

And on the note of showing up early...... I and my bosses used to hate it when people showed up out of hours. The thing is you dont go to your local shop and ask them to come and open just for you because you need something. No, you wait until their opening hours. However I wouldnt have minded if you came and just waited out the front in your car and often for poeple who live a fair way from the kennels and have rung to see if its ok, we have let them pick up out of hours, but was at our discretion.

I agree with your post Kaffy. Also when owner's show up early it can interrupt the days schedule and sometimes even though those owners have paid for a

bath for their dogs it is not always possible, and we have had to give owners dogs back with only a quick damp cloth rub. We do however, refund the money the paid for the bath or issue them a credit for a free bath next time.

If we are not busy we will of course offer to bath their dog if they don't mind waiting 10-15mins.

Also a lot of dogs get super excited when they see their owners as they have not seen them for a while. Or they are really excitable or anxious dogs by nature anyway. This is normal. Nothing to be stressed about. Also when dogs get home they are usually tired from all the exercise they get during daily playtimes  So it's best to wait a day or two till the dog gets back into his normal routine, then if he is still displaying behaviour that is worrying you

you ask questions- call the kennel owners, ask them what the he was like during his stay - Did he eat? What was he fed? Was he happy, fearful, anxious, excited, did he run around non stop?, was his poo normal? did he have any health issues- vomitting his food, coughing limping etc.

All depending on the behaviour he is exhibiting.

And I know at our kennel at the end of each day it is usually really quiet, all the dogs settle down for the evening.

This is normal. Nothing to get stressed about. :D

In your case it seems that maybe it was a badly owned and run kennel, Kirsty. And if you no longer want to take your furkids there, I wouldn't hold that against you. But as others on this thread have said not all boarding kennels are bad. Some of us are ethical and caring and treat your dogs like they were our own!

cheers,

I think the better test of the kennel, given that the dogs have been there for a stay, is whether your dogs are looking enthusiastic or worried when you drive back toward the kennel. I have many people tell me that their dogs get all waggy and enthusiastic when they get to the turnoff that they think means 'kennel'. Reason: my guess is they like doggy company, they get lots of play, and they think the food is great. Some of the dogs who are enthusiastic about coming back are also enthusiastic about going home. Some dogs are enthusiastic about lots of things.

Totally agree Sandgrubber,

I have been told by a few regular clients that as soon as they come up the dirt road their pooches start jumping around wagging their tails in excitement of coming to the kennels! Some even say their dogs like staying at the kennels more than they like their own home! Coz' they can play with all the other dogs, they get lots of attention from the staff.....

Not Samford Kennels perchance?

Despite so called awards. I would not leave my dogs there if you paid me a million dollars.

Don't know about the OP. But we were happy to leave our shelties there. It'd be the only place where I'd leave our tibbies.

And no payment of a million dollars changed hands.

(If we're talking about the same place, that is.)

Back O/T. I also agree that an owner is the best judge of their own dogs' behaviours.

This is weird. I wasn't sure at first if the O/P was joking about Samford? The reason I ask is because if you look back at my thread, I stated the furkids had been extremely happy at a previous kennels (not naming it) but time and money had become a factor this time when booking kennels - well, that place was Samford! They seemed to really enjoy their stay there, came trotting out, happy, looking and smelling great, tails wagging as if to say "do we have to go home mum?". Fred almost walked straight past me he was that chilled!

Mystiqview - have you had a bad experience or bad feedback for them?

VERY VERY bad personal experience yes.

The one and only time I had boarded two of my dogs. It was there, as they were literally only 5 minutes up the road to where I lived. It was not peak period. My dogs were there only three nights, while I went away for a long (work related) weekend.

They came out with the worst case of diahorrea you could possibly imagine. I don't know what they were fed, but what ever it was. It was smelly and runny. Something they did not normally have and certainly did not go in with.

They had fang marks on them from some other dog. A puncture wound in one ear and other fang puncture marks on their legs. I was not nothing about any scuffles or fights they were in.

The person who led them out, you could see they were wary of them and could not wait to get away from them. They are normally friendly and will say hello to anyone. Once back into my possession, they were saying hello to others who came to collect their dogs. Another person who was there at the time even noticed the fang marks.

They were desexed. In good health and friendly, not dominate or anything where you would suspect possible issues with play groups etc.

I don't know what happened in that kennel during those days. But never again.

Mystique, sorry to hear of your dogs' stomach upset after being fed something different at the kennels....& the fang mark on the ear.

We'll have to differ on this one. We've used that kennels many times & all went very well. Same with our friends' big Norwegian Forest cat.
