wagsalot Posted August 26, 2010 Share Posted August 26, 2010 (edited) Extremely common & i amazed how many DOLERS tell people to use kongs & treat balls when owners go to work.Those treat balls are even more dangerous. We get clients who bring in kongs & we warn them of the risks but its the owners choice. Also the number of kongs with mould growing inside them from left over food is also I couldn't imagine it being any worse than a bone thats been burried in the yard for a month or two before being dug up again? I leave Riley's kong to soak in hot soapy water over night and it normally cleans up pretty easily. You'll find most dog toys have warnings on them these days saying supervised use only. My friend email'd me the photo's of this poor dog, they are so terrible I'm not comfortable putting them up on here.... the poor dog's face is half ripped off! My friend sms'd me and said that the owners are considering Euth now as the damage to the mouth might be too expensive for them to fix... But, folks have got to leave something with their dogs if they're at work for long hours to keep the dog entertained (especially if the dog has to be caged or crated, as my girl is). I don't know if anything is 100% safe to leave with a dog. Even bones can cause freak accidents. Rather than swearing off kongs and their like entirely, perhaps the trick is to get a kong either too small for the dog to put its bottom jaw in, or so large that the dog can't trap its jaw in there? Everythings Shiny Posted August 26, 2010 Share Posted August 26, 2010 We have sent the information onto Kong, 4 months on and still awaiting their response. My Boss has even contacted KONG. He believes that an older dog would be fine with the appropriate size kong as their teeth are worn down. Rini is only a young dog which is why she got it caught up. My dogs are now entertained with some heavy duty squeaky toys.... no chance of bits falling off, getting mouths stuck on it or choking on it. Staranais Posted August 26, 2010 Share Posted August 26, 2010 Don't want to burst your bubble (sounds like you've been through enough already this week) but I've heard of dogs choking on squeakies if they can get them out of the toy. The too small ones have resulted in tongues being caught in them & some dogs have lost part of there tongue or died in the heat due to not being able to drink. Everythings Shiny Posted August 26, 2010 Share Posted August 26, 2010 (edited) ^very true My boss had seen that happen so he made sure all staff helped clients pick the correct size Kong for their pet before rini got injured I feel sorry for the owner of this latest dog. Apparently these owners are the best ones you could ask for, always bringing the dog in if the slightest thing was wrong or they had any concerns at all. Normally, they apparently supervised the dog with her kong, but something happened yesterday whilst they were watching her with their young child. A matter of 20-30 minutes later and now their pet is facing an uncertain future. My friend whose hospital it happened at, told me late last night that after the vet spoke to a specialist surgeon in Sydney said that with the amount of damage to the mouth, the chances of saving her are very slim. They've done some x-ray's last night which showed 8 fractures of the lower jaw. The owners were getting ready to put her to sleep but she couldn't cope with the shock of what happened to her and went in her sleep.
