all that glitters
A friend of mine gives her dog a clove of garlic a week to keep fleas away and her family has for years and years and they have never seen a flea. I got all excited cos this seems really natural and easy, but DOES it work, any one else have any feedback?
LizT
I fed garlic to my dogs for years as a Natural remedy for internal parasites. Found this out in a very old book about Herbal remedies for dogs. However I recently read in a Veterinary Journal Newsletter that Garlic makes dogs lethargic so I'm not sure. I have also and still do feed it to my horses. poodlefan
Garlic, like other members of the onion family, is linked to anaemia in dogs. In moderation its OK but I don't know how much is too much. It's certainly no substitute for chemical based worming treatments IMO.
Lowenhart
My sister subscribed to this as well and fed her cat garlic to keep away. I inherited her cat and OMG it had SUPER FLEAS! I suspect the garlic made the fleas stronger as they were immune to most chemical flea treatments and caused no end of headaches. I believe feeding garlic as flea repellent is a myth. The Spotted Devil
Garlic as a flea repellant IS a myth - it started from some published research that was taken out of context and misinterpreted. ETA: You don't have to see fleas for your dog or cat to "have" them Edited March 16, 2010 by The Spotted Devil
LizT
Interestingly this old book never claimed it as a "Flea repellent". It was said to be a vermifuge (internal parasites). But I agree that daily use would be too often although I know there are dog Naturopaths out there who use it in many of there daily "remedies" and tonics. Miss B
When I was a child, we would add a teaspoon of minced garlic to the dogs' dinner every night. My mum thought it would keep the fleas at bay.
becks
My dogs get a mint based herbal supplement for fleas and it certainly seems to work - if I forget to add it for awhile they pick up fleas, start it again and the fleas leave home
dee lee
Years ago I tried garlic in my dog's food plus a rosemary and lemon spray mix- both were recommended as natural flea repellants. Neither worked and I just had a sticky dog whose breath stank.
