Help - Weakness In Back Legs And Swollen Paws

My youngest was playing a little rough with our older boy this morning and ended up with a slight limp in his back leg. It is not uncommon for rough play to end up with a bruise or two so I didn't worry too much about it.

With the rain and fly invasion ... I applied some Cetrigen on their ears (both have fly bites on their ears) and gave both dogs a light spray with Repel-X this morning to try to keep the flies away.

He was bathed this afternoon so he is covered for ticks and fleas.

A little while ago I went outside and the youngest was a little slow getting off the bed. His front paws look a little swollen and he seems to have some weakness in the back legs. If you touch him back legs or hips he sits. He looks a little tucked up but there is no hardness in his tummy area and there doesn't seem to be any sore spots that I can find. He is walking but seems a little hesitant.

He is still eating, drinking and toileting. His breathing is normal.

I doesn't really have the money to rush him to emergency but will if he deteriorates in any way I will … or should I take him now?

Any ideas on what is causing this? I am wondering if it is some allergy to one of the sprays...

Ok - he is being really clingy and is currently sleeping on the back steps. I went out to hang some washing out in the carport and he walked out there ok. He has also run out to check out the possum our other dog was barking at.

He just became hesitant when it came to stepping back onto the back veranda (which is pebbled and a bit rough on the feet) - it seems like his paws were sensitive.

He doesn't seem to be getting any worse ...

There is no redness or visable injuries - the pads are just puffy. He isn't chewing or licking them. His legs and joints are not swollen or puffy.

He hasn't been out of the yard today so he hasn't walked on anything different.

The poor baby is just much quieter then normal ... I have never seen him laying around so much as he has been. :D

No heat in them?

Sorry Tilly - I don't really know. I looked some stuff up and there is the suggestion of "see your Vet" but nothing that would suggest "urgency" - but then how can it? The symptoms are a bit vague at this point (not your fault).

If there is weakness in the hind end - that's probably the part that bothers me the most. I guess coupled with the other symptoms .... I don't know what they represent, but I'm not comfortable about them.

I was originally going to post that I didn't think it would warrant a trip to the emergency Vet, but I'd hate for this to be from a bite/serious allergic reaction or other thing that I just don't know about that should have had emergency attention.

I can't offer much, I'm sorry. So it really needs to be your call on this one, unless someone else more knowledgeable pops in.

I have been tossing up with the trip to emergency ... but at the same time he is not getting any worse and it hasn't stopped him from rushing out to the back yard to sort out the possums.

I guess I will keep monitoring him for tonight and see how he is in the morning - and take him to his regular vet in the morning ... unless of course he gets worse.

After a sleepless night I took him to the vet this morning and as usual - the vet was useless.

He doesn't believe it has anything to do with Repel-X even though this is the only thing that was any different in the last week (they have left the property since the 4th of March).

He gave him an injection of Metacam as the vet seems to indicate it might be a soft tissue injury ... even indicating I should get his hips x-rayed. The vet couldn't identify any sore spots and his reflexes are all normal.

While he isn't as bad as he was on Sunday - he is still not better. His feet are still a little swollen/puffy and he is sleeping a lot more then normal.

He is slow getting up but walks ok when he is up as long as the surface is not rough (bitumen road, peddled surface) - this seems to cause him to walk slowly and a bit unbalanced. Soft lino, smooth concrete etc seems to be much better.

He is eating, drinking and toileting with no problems.

I have put him in his side of the yard for the day which is mainly grass - which he seems to be able to walk ok on. I am hoping for some improvement when I get home this afternoon but so far the reports I have received from a friend who is keeping an eye on him - he is still the same as when I left this morning.

Thanks Ams - I will check them out.

He is brighter and happier tonight but I didn't want to let him overdo anything. He is still unbalanced and tentative on uneven surfaces but better then he was this morning. Maybe another day or two of rest might ...

The boy has had a reasonably good day. He is still getting tired easierly and sleeping lots more than normal but is moving around much better.

I am restricting his running around so he doesn't tired himself out too much ... poor baby is not happy about it.

  • 2 weeks later...

The little boy has made a full recovery. I took him to Animal Options for a full assessment of his hips/back etc after it was suggested he has a problem in that area.

He was given a clean bill of health and deemed to be in "superb physical condition". I was very pleased to be told he had absolutely no problems at all with his hips, back, joints etc.
