Tiggy
I thought I read somewhere that the canine grounds were free to use for members but now I can't find where I read it. So my question is can you train there without joining whatever clubs are run from there. Thanks .
mirawee
Members can go and use the grounds whenever they want. If training is on though at a minimum you would be expected to pay the light money fee.
RallyValley
In the agility nationals handout it makes Canine Grounds sound like an offlead dog park!

I heard that any Dogswest member can use the K9 grounds to train, but also that if you want to train when a club is using the grounds, you need to be a member of that club. joelle
Ive been up there the last 2 weeks and no-one has said anything / approached me. To be fair alll I have been doing is walking Rosie around the grounds and watching the classes, to get her used to the sounds and smells of lots of dogs in one area before I enrol her in the next term, but that in itself is also a form of training? If you mean off leash training - I think I read somewhere that if you are member of any of the clubs there, you can use the grounds at your discretion? I thought there was some form of training / function held there most days / evenings?
pie
I do recall an instructor at ACWA telling us at training a couple of times that council rangers had been down there fining people who were letting their dogs run off lead on the grounds. I didn't pay much attention because I only go to the grounds for training anyway. Joelle - I can't see why what you're doing is a problem, I know a few showies who bring their pups down and walk them around while training is on to get them used to the noise. There are quite often people down there with their dogs checking out the clubs before they join anyway.
RubyStar
I heard that about the rangers quite a while ago, too. Some of us used to bring our dogs down early to training and let them have a run around, and someone got cautioned by the rangers for doing so! When I rock up to agility early now, I am training Ruby offlead which I'd hope wouldn't fall under the rangers "law", but plenty of others let their dogs have a romp before agility! It's stupid, in my opinion at least, that the ranger should be allowed to fine anyone using the K9 grounds, it's there for training dogs and sometimes training dogs involves working them offlead or letting them blow off some steam first! Randoms that are not DogsWest members or members of an affiliated club who only come in to use it as an offleash dog park is another story, so I guess the ranger should be questioning these people on memberships and intentions before issuing a fine? Argh the more I think about it the more complicated it gets I see nothing wrong with anyone coming down with their dog onlead either to check out the grounds and the clubs, and doesn't DogsWest encourage the public to come down with their dogs? The rule is that their dogs must be on lead and not interfere with anyone else. Edited March 16, 2010 by RubyStar
mirawee
All dogs at the DogsWest grounds must be on lead at all times unless training. So you are not allowed to toilet your dogs without them being on lead according to the rules Try it near show people and they will have a go at you Agility/obedience people on the other hand are a lot more relaxed. The council actually have no rights to fine people with dogs on the DogsWest grounds as it is private property not public land. It is up to DogsWest to control their dogs on lead policy not the council. Unless of course the dogs are "trespassing". RubyStar, there was something in the Canine a year or so ago. It stated that as long as you don't interfere with any training/competition sessions members are allowed to used the grounds at any time they are open, however should pay light money if the lights are on.
