Obedience Classes

I had Jet's last behaviourist lesson yesterday. It was really great to hear feedback on how much Jet has improved :( She told me he is now ready to re-enter into obedience classes. I would like a club which is tolerant and understanding of Jet's small case of fear aggression towards other dogs, it may take him longer to settle in a class with other dogs and move to another level. I need a club which has the different level classes of obedience and I wouldn't mind if the club also offered flyball for later on down the track (optional). They need to be in Logan preferably. Recommendations would be appreciated.

to be honest Jetty, I don't think there are too many clubs in Brissy that will be understanding of your dog's issues. Most of the clubs in Brissy use out dated training methods and most instructors don't have a particularly good understanding of dog behaviour etc. You could try VIP training club, they are a positive club who I think would be most likely to understand your dogs issues. I would NOT recommend Logan obedience club to anyone, especially someone with a fear agressive dog.

Good luck finding a club, and when you do decided on one stick to your guns and don't let the instructors bully you into doing something that your dog may not be comfortable with! :)

Thank you. My behaviourist said that many trainers should be understanding as his issues aren't anything large :) Oh well. I did the VIP club for puppy preschool with Jet but I will give them a ring and see what they think.

Maybe try www.wagtails.com.au They have a training venue at Springwood if that is close enough for you.

Ask to speak with Tabitha to ensure she is able to encompass your dog's needs into the classes.

im down in VIC but many clubs down here have bright coloured bandanas(usually red or yellow) and when a dog is wearing it everyone knows to give the dog some space :) if u could find a club that has something similar it could make his first few trips a little easier so he can get used to it without dogs in his face the whole time?? im not a trainer or anything though...

I was going to say exactly the same thing as Seita, I doubt any of the traditional obedience schools would be worthwhile. VIP are great & that is where I train, so I can vouch for them :) .

JJ, it really depends on how you plan to handle your dog too.

I have taken my DA dog to obedience club, but we do our own thing and I don't push him to do things I know are too much for him. I don't let anyone else handle him and I won't do anything with him I am not comfortable with. Our club has a yellow ribbon policy for DA dogs or dogs that need space so you tie a yellow ribbon to their leash or collar to signify to others not to let their dogs get too close. I never had any problem, and I do much the same with Daisy now (even though she is not DA) because our training method does not 'gel' with doing an hour of class work. I pop into the class when it suits her and take her out before she loses interest.

I think it's really important to know what your dogs limits are and be willing to say no to the instructor if they suggest you do something you or your dog are not comfortable with.

Thanks Everyone.

The only thing I would not want is another dog getting in his face other than that if he is busy & focused he will usually be pretty good. It is a tricky situation. Jet would defiantly benefit from being around calm dogs and is a very fast learner. I know every dog will be different in the classes. I will have a look into VIP again.
