Invasion Of The Flies ....

My backyard is absolutely thick with flies. I didn't notice them before this morning when I went out to feed the boys. I gave them their bones (seperate sides of the yard) and then came back a few moments later to find the youngest absolutely covered in flies.

By this afternoon both have crusty ears from the flies ... I have sprayed the ears with that purple stuff with insect repellant but they flies are still all over them.

I have brought about 8 fly traps and have just set them up around the yard. Even though it will take about 24 hours before they really start working .... they already contain about 3 dozen flies each.

I poop scoop twice a day so I can't really understand why I have so many.

Is anyone else getting the invasion or am I just the lucky one?

I was only thinking the other day that the flies around here have left. I got a fly trap a month ago, but by that time was not troubled by the few flies remaining - even they seemed to have gone.

Perhaps they've all gone up to visit at your house, Tilly LOL.

I'm finding the problem at the moment is European Wasps and have to really watch it in case my boy has left an uneaten bone, because the wasps swarm it and I know will challenge my dog if he decides to return to it. I used a hose the other day so that I could get to a bone to throw it out, and the little blighters threatened to have me. Rotten things - pity they don't seem to be good meal tickets for our native birds. I had to spray the bone with mortein, then I had to hose off the over spray from the lawn so that it wouldn't die and so that my dog wouldn't accidentally ingest, roll or walk in it. Then I washed the spray off the bone (so that wildlife wouldn't suffer when the bone was taken to the tip), bagged the bone and threw it in the bin.

I will pack them up and send them back to you Erny.

I seriously think they must have collected a lot of friends of the way up to sunny Brisbane. :grouphug:

I would have thought all the wind would have blown them away but it seems my place must be a perfect place for them to hide from the wind.

Swap you for the Euro Wasps. No ......... wouldn't wish them on anyone.

:grouphug: I can just imagine them : ..... "Breaker, breaker ....... we have a convoy ... "

Yeah, but us Melbournites had some winds down here so we blew them all back up to you.

Try the Advantix on the poochies...I use it in my guys as it was the only thing that kept the flies off of their ears properly...and didn't make their ear fur manky or need to be reapplied several times a day!

I'm sure I read recently something else - it might make the ear fur a bit "manky" but at least it wasn't about applying yet even more in the way of chemicals/drugs to our dogs' systems. Just can't remember what the stuff was.

Perhaps direct attention to this thread from the Health Forum (via link). ??

ETA: I'm trying to find what it was I am looking for, but in the meantime, "Bag Balm" is something I've heard others talk about, except I don't think you can get it over here.

I've always had a fly problem here (even before I got my dogs) but this year has been worse than ever. I set up 3 fly traps but dry retch when I have to empty them ... today I'd emptied a couple into a plastic bag and was just undoing the other one when one of my dogs turned up and licked the stuff - EEEEWWWWW!! Anyhow I thought I'd have to rush him off to a vet for a stomach pump but the pack said it's natural and completely harmless to pets - phew!

we don't have plague proportions but there are quite a few about - we even had the joy of maggots in the house the other day -I still have no bloody idea where they came from, there is no food lying about, the bins had been emptied and washed the day before and there is just NOTHING I can find that would have attracted flies to lay eggs anywhere inside. They are EVIL :)

  • 2 weeks later...

The flies are still hanging around ... the fly traps just can't cope with the numbers of flies. The traps are full within 2 days ... and it takes 24 hours for the traps to start working.

I brought Repel-X and Cetrigen for the dogs ears ... the pup had a serious reaction to the Repel-X so I am just using Cetrigen at the moment. The pup hates the spray can near his ears so it is a major struggle to get him to sit still long enough to spray his ears. His ears are getting worse while the older boy is slowly improving (or at least not getting worse).

I am having difficulty finding anything to use on the dogs and have now started spraying citronella foggers around the yard morning and night. I burn citronella mozzie coils hoping this will help but they are still so thick ... and my neighbours don't have any flies at all.

Wow, Tilly ..... a bit strange that your neighbours aren't enduring the same. It's not possible, is it, that something has died, maybe under your house (for example) or something, which would possibly be attracting the flies to your home? Was it here, or somewhere else, that I read that flies don't travel very far from where they morph from maggots?

Your poor pups. I hope the situation improves for you soon.

We don't have a fly issue here now that we have had bouts of colder weather.

The only rotten thing I can smell is the fly traps ... I am beginning wonder if they are actually attracting the flies. I currently put 2 traps out every day and replace them after 2 days (so there is 4 around the yard at any one time).

I have scrubbed all the concrete and hosed the lawn, their beds have been scrubbed ... and the poor dogs have even been given a hydrobath.

I have sprayed Permoxin around the place (I had forgotten that I had brought some for the ticks) so hopefully this will help.

There doesn't seem to be any one place were the flies are thicker ... they just seem to stick to you as soon as you step outside. Thankfully we don't seem to have any inside the house.

We have heaps of flies here too at the moment, picture this,,, in desperation i hung one of those sticky and yucky fly strips out on the back pergola. At some stage it must have fallen down because of the wind. Silky found it and rolled on it, when I found her all i could see was one end between her front legs and the other end sticking out from her back legs!! Peeled it off very carefully, bathed her twice and she was still sticky, finally got some nail polish remover and as gently as I could wiped her down with that, she's not as sticky anymore but still not right! Never will I hang one of those disgusting things up again.

If it's any consulation...it appears we now have them here too! From the lil sticky bush flies to the blowies :kissbetter: They don't seem to be bothering the dogs toooo much but i'm going to do up a solution of Neem Oil and give them a spray and make up another batch to spray the yard :)
