Bottom Dragging

Our 14 week old CKCS X has been dragging her bottom on and off since we got her. She is regularly worm and flea treated. Has been checked over by our local vet and had her anal glands checked. All is fine with her yet she still (only occasionally) drags her bottom. I do notice that sometimes its after a poo, other times its not.

So my Q is...Is this normal?

TIA

In our case initially it was an inflammed anal gland causing pup's irritation for which I certainly wasn't going to remedy :) so off to the vet he went for a good sqeeze. This helped but I've noticed occasionally he still does a quick scoot particularly immediately after poos. I'm keeping an eye on him to make sure he doesn't go flop bot again (tends to sit down mid-walk) if it's the glands playing up.

If your pup's been wormed and it's only taking place after poos, perhaps a scoot is just his way of feeling a little cleaner.

Oh- lightbulb moment

I just realised it was SHE-

has she been checked for vaginitis or anything ? is she clean around the vulva area? perhaps it is her urine stinging- perhaps she has a slight irritataion....

No, she hasn't! Will get the vet to check out her vulva on Thurs when we go iin for her final vac. Her girly bits look fine though. Not red or anything.

I know it's not much help, but maybe a little consolation... Chester does it too

That does help actually! Glad another Cavy pup is doing it! :grouphug:

Just had Jj my maltese x to vet other day for same thing his anal glands were squeezed but weren't that bad but he was bum scooting before that and hasn't done it since, and like your dog is always after doing poo's so perhaps it is just because they get itchy there after going to toilet you could watch your dog and see if she has any trouble going to toilet but other than that I think it's just whatever other people have said here.

Hi,

My dog before my poodles was a bum scooter. We didnt think much of it.

I in no way want to frighten you but merely present our experience. Our dog was diagnosed as having cancer in his anal glands and passed away within 1 year. He was ten.

The specialist vet that diagnosed him said that she sees this far too often and feels it benefits a lot of dogs to remove anal glands.

It may be normal for your dog to do this but if it persists I would be seeking a second veterinary opinion.

My Cavalier gets a bit of an itch occasionally and drags her butt.. but I have a good old scratch too sometimes so I'm not worried :coffee: it looks hilarious when she does it.. my 4 year old sons gets on his bum and does the same just for kicks.

sounds like anal glands, and they usually become blocked if there is not enough to naturally express them via poo passing that is 'textured', in other words, is your dog getting enough roughage in the form of raw bones ect ?

Some dogs just have anal gland that are troublesome though, best get the vet or nurse to express them and then see how she goes.
