sas
In 24 yrs of owning multi breeds & many many dogs never ever had a skin issue,We groom dogs with skin issues but realistically many are owner created by diet, insistence to give all these junk food treats, perfume sprays & just silly stuff dogs dont need.Poor coat maintanence, unfit dog & not being honest with themselves with what they do & dont give. My show dogs have & are bathed in pantene, are done twice a week & pee feathers nightly never ever had an issue. We have never used flea stuff, worming is never over done .our dogs dont get junk treats ,never feed BARF nor feel its any better . In our breed we did have one breeder who was well known for causing skin issues & thankfully they no longer breed & there lines have just about gone. Generally i think many issues with some planning are easy to avoid but many run to the vet. If i had a dog chewing crazy at one spot & never any where else i would use a doggy chiro or bowen, dogs will chew to ease pain so like the dog chewing at his spin area he may have pinched a nerve or similiar Oh God, are you here blaming owners again for allergies? My dog came with allergic skin disease as a puppy so your little theory doesn't sit well with me thank you very much. We already know there is a genetic link for Atopic allergies. In my breed Allergies are pretty common as they are in others too. I've had a number of dogs through my home as fosters and also as my own and they haven't experienced allergies so there you have it again your theory doesn't pan out there either when none of those dogs had allergies and my current one does and they are all treated the same in terms of flea/worming/bathing blah blah blah. Maybe keep your little theory for the pet owners you sell too when they complain of skin problems. Edited March 26, 2010 by sas
sas
SAS got a Q for you then - you clearly understand this far better than me - so I'm picking your brain. ..if the Th2 is a response to protein antigens, is it possible that the changes to the proteins themselves during manufacture (ingested in an altered state) are causing the level of adverse response we now see. Bearing in mind that the reason L-Tryptophan was removed from the market was the manufacture process - natural tryptophan is fine..altered states of proteins? Edited to say - I'm just getting into this subject...... You've confused me with a Dermatogist
Ptolomy
I took Beans to see her dermatologist today - 6 monthly review time and there have been some changes to treatment of allergies. I need to start her on EPO (Evening Primrose Oil) 3-5 tablets daily for her weight. I will also be trialling some injections when they get them in stock (oops forgot the name of them) - so twice weekly for 4 weeks and then twice monthly to go with her immunotherapy. She will be rattling soon with all these oils and pills
toughgirl27
Ok so, my friend had a 4yo staffy, dark brindle, male, entire, gorgeous boy! About a year ago he started scratching uncontrollablyand ended up with a huge red rash. My friend took him to the vet and he said his dog would have to have a cortisone inj and tabs. As soon as the inj and tabs wore off the rash came back worse than ever! :D The vet told my friend that his dog would have to be on inj's and tabs for the rest of his life to control the condition, it was an auto immune response. My friend after agonising over the decision, decided to put his dog to sleep! The vet came to the house and his dog seemed to "know" what was going on. ;) My friend held his dog during the injection and said that he felt the spirit leave the body, even b4 the vet had finished giving the lethal injection! I was overwhelmed with sadness when my friend told me all this as I had known his dog since he was a young pup, when he first brought him home! Sorry for the long post but it got me thinking about this situation. He was a beautiful boy and I miss him everyday! XXtoughgirlXXX

I hope the dog forgives us. Edited April 22, 2010 by Erny

I'm really just asking because I'm curious As in brand/type of dry and which raw meat? I have done the elimination diet with Beans so I know she can't have beef, lamb, wheat, corn or milk. Basically she is on a BARF diet and gets a lot of goat and chicken. Dry food the only one she can have is Calafornia Natural Herring and Sweet Potato. stormie
Thanks for the information on the spot-on, Ptolomy! Going to find out more about that one for sure. We trialled the Essential 6 Spot-on which is designed to replenish the skins natural moisture/barrier, however there are so many plant oils in there and after 3 weeks I had to stop because it was giving Orbit terrible hives/itching. His coat was otherwise great, though.
Ptolomy
[Loved that dry food aswell. Have you tried the Proplan sensitive? Unfortunately she is allergic to the Proplan sensitive as well as the salmon and rice one The dermatologist we see is fantastic - she has just got back from the US where all these papers were presented - one on the use of EPO and the fact that it is not being prescribed in high enough doses - so for Broad Beans who is a little overweight at the moment at 16.8kg they are recommended 3-5 tablets per day. I have settled on 4 and she will be reviewed again in 6 months.

stormie
I've been looking at the Sogeval range of shampoos as well as their top spot and I must say I'm a bit excited by their range. We struggle with many shampoos because of Orbits allergy to oatmeal, we can't use many of the shampoos designed for allergic dogs. I can't find anything about it from Australia though, but I really hope your Derm sourced it from Aus and didn't just bring it all back with her from USA. I really want to try it all!!! But check out their range of stuff! WEBSITE Edited April 22, 2010 by stormie

She arrived back home on Tuesday from the US to find that they had run out of the pipettes so is awaiting the next delivery which is 2-3 weeks. I will let you know when they arrive and how it all goes. She did say, like Advantage - it can leave an oil type stain on the back of the neck (which I absolutely hate) BUT if it helps her allergies - I will happily put up with it. I opted not to try the shampoo at this stage - didn't want to change too many things at the one time.
Ptolomy
What dossage rate per kg is your Derm prescribing for EPO? When discussing it she originally said 3-5 tablets a day (Beans is 16.8kg) The discharge letter says EPO 1g:3g q 24 hrs I started her last night on 4 tablets and I think I paid $19.99 for 190 pills. I guess thats a lot of pills for a Great Dane. Apparently EPO also comes in a liquid form but the Pharmacy said that it was harder to get and had to be kept in the fridge.
