Stitch Posted March 5, 2010 Share Posted March 5, 2010 I have never had to glue ears before but now I have a promising pup that is sending semaphore messages with her ears and I am wondering if glueing will be the answer??? The breed has ears that just fold over half way up but she has one ear that folds over 3/4's of the way up and the other folds pretty much near the base. I realise that teething can effect ears but I have never had one this bad before - to glue or not to glue??? Has glueing worked for you? How long did you have to leave the ears glued for??? Dogsfevr Posted March 5, 2010 Share Posted March 5, 2010 We have glued but o be honest we have never bothered with a dog whose ear set is bad to start with, depending on how the folds & cartiledge sits really depends on how successful it may be. Clyde Posted March 5, 2010 Share Posted March 5, 2010 I was always a bit skeptical and didn't bother with one dog (I now wish I had). Warley recently glued a pups ear for me with amazing results. Stitch Posted March 5, 2010 Author Share Posted March 5, 2010 (edited) Its not the ear set ie. where the ear joins the head, but just the differing ways that the cartiliage is holding the ear. I agree with you Showdog - I guess that is why I have never glued an ear before, but I would hate to 'throw the baby out with the bathwater'! Do you think this kind of problem would be hereditary??? Edited to add, mum has perfect ears and I was really hoping that would be something that would be passed on, but it would appear that hasn't happened. Bullbreedlover Posted March 5, 2010 Share Posted March 5, 2010 We glue our Bulldog ears, I would rather do this than have the ear set untrue. I have seen Bulldogs with button ears which ruin the whole look of the dog. If a simple glueing was done and kept up with from the start then all would be good for the show ring. Yes the actual ear set can be a factor. We also tape our Bullmastiff ears. There are different ways to tape. You have to find a way which suits you and the dog. Depending on how they are sitting when they start teething. Its just something we can tell as they are getting older. Bulldogs we do as early as 7 weeks old and it is kept up to when they have their first shows. We havent done every single puppy but we keep a close eye on them I have seen way too many Bulldogs with incorrect ears, which is something that can be fixed very easily. Of course it does help if they have correct sized ears and they arent too big. We use a contact adhesive and it just wears off after time. We reapply if need be so the cartiledge is set true. The only damage as such that you can do to the ears is that the hair can come off. Perservere. The cartiledge can take awhile to set. ShesaLikeableBiBear Posted March 6, 2010 Share Posted March 6, 2010 Sheltie ears can be notorious for flying, we start with a mixture of oil and cement, (coated with powder) and if that doesn't work then we glue. If the pup's ears are not staying down then don't stop the "treatment". Hopefully by nine months they should be down. You can also rub some vaseline on the inside of the ear where the fold is to try and soften the cartiledge. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I just glued my puppies ears tonight for the first time. They are 12 weeks old. The glue comes out in about 10-14days and I would do it at least 2-3 times before leaving it a couple of days to see how it has taken.
